July 26, 2017 breaking Comments Off on These Chicago Catholics have a game plan for evangelization

Chicago, Ill., Jul 26, 2017 / 03:02 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Taking its cue from the recent and massive Convocation of Catholic Leaders in the U.S., one Chicago-based organization is partnering with parishes to form missionary disciples. The convocation took place in Florida July 1-4, drawing several thousand participants. Aimed at equipping and invigorating Catholic leaders, the event addressed challenges that inhibit parishes from evangelization, especially the deflating attendance of parishioners in

Catholic nuns urge senators to oppose any bill repealing Obamacare, cutting Medicaid

More than 7,000 Catholic nuns are urging senators to oppose a motion to proceed to debate on a healthcare bill before the Senate this week, and called the GOP’s plan to repeal and replace parts of Obamacare “immoral and contrary to the teachings of our Catholic faith.” The letter, organized by the Catholic social justice organization NETWORK, was sent to senators Monday and signed by 7,150 Catholic sisters. The nuns are being led by Sister Simone Campbell, who advocated for the Affordable Care Act in 2010. Campbell plans to hand deliver the letter to Senate offices Monday.

Bishop Paprocki Responds to Fr. Martin

There has been quite a bit of consternation since I sent an internal communication to my clergy and staff last month that was unfortunately leaked to the public concerning my “Decree Regarding Same-sex ‘Marriage’ and Related Pastoral Issues.” While the underlying doctrinal issues are not new, these norms were necessary to address situations in the pastoral context arising from the new reality in the law and in our culture, given that same-sex marriage is now recognized by legislative action and judicial decision as legal throughout the United States. This decree prohibits same-sex weddings to be performed by our diocesan personnel or to take place in Catholic facilities, restricts persons in such unions from receiving the sacraments or serving in a public liturgical…Continue Reading

Pastoral Guidelines for Implementing Amoris Laetitia | Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon – Archbishop Alexander K. Sample

July 23, 2017 breaking Comments Off on Pastoral Guidelines for Implementing Amoris Laetitia | Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon – Archbishop Alexander K. Sample

The Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia completes the reflection on the family conducted by the Synods of Bishops of 2014 and 2015, a reflection that engaged the Church throughout the world. In issuing Amoris Laetitia, Pope Francis once again calls the Church to renew and intensify the Christian missionary proclamation of God’s mercy, while presenting more persuasively the Church’s teaching about the nature of the family and the Sacrament of Matrimony. In all of this the

Could a California bill make Catholic conduct codes illegal?

July 23, 2017 breaking Comments Off on Could a California bill make Catholic conduct codes illegal?

Sacramento, Calif., Jul 21, 2017 / 12:02 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Pro-abortion groups are lobbying for a California law that Catholic leaders warn would open employers like Catholic schools to lawsuits for asking teachers to follow their codes of conduct. “The bill unmistakably targets religious organization employers in the state, and goes further, inviting expensive litigation that could take years to sort out,” the California Catholic Conference said July 14, adding that it “sets a dangerous precedent for religious employers.” The Catholic conference strongly opposes the bill, spon

Bishop Conley: 50 years after Land O’Lakes, Catholic education needs renewal

Denver, Colo., Jul 21, 2017 / 04:05 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- The 50th anniversary of a historic statement that changed Catholic higher education in America represents both a cautionary tale and a chance to reflect on Catholic renewal, said Bishop James D. Conley of Lincoln, Nebraska. “The Land O’Lakes statement proposed to redefine the mission of the Catholic university. It rejected the authority of the Church, and of her doctrinal teaching,” Bishop Conley said. “It rejected the idea that faith and reason work best in communion with one another. It prioritized the standards and culture of secular universities over the authentic mission of Catholic education. It was a statement of self-importanc

Self-pitying and disgruntled, Cardinal Müller takes more jabs at Pope Francis

July 21, 2017 breaking Comments Off on Self-pitying and disgruntled, Cardinal Müller takes more jabs at Pope Francis

Cardinal Gerhard Müller has issued new, thinly veiled criticism of Pope Francis by complaining that the pontiff has effectively eliminated Germans from top positions in the Vatican and by insinuating that he is allowing a “pope cult” to fester. In an interview with the German news agency Deutsche Presse Agentur (dpa), which spanned some two hours, the former prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) complained once more and at length that he felt hard done by in the way the pope dismissed him from his key Roman Curia post. And he enrolled Francis’s retired predecessor, Benedict XVI, to justify his grievances. “It is sad that there is no longer any G

Pro-Life Group Slams Republican Opposing Senate Bill to Defund Planned Parenthood

July 21, 2017 breaking Comments Off on Pro-Life Group Slams Republican Opposing Senate Bill to Defund Planned Parenthood

Senator Shelly Moore Capito is one of three Republicans in the Senate who opposes the Senate bill to defund Planned Parenthood and repeal Obamacare. She has flip-flopped from suporting the bill to opposing it — but her political calculations are not playing well at home. The junior senator from West Virginia previously voted to repeal the failing ObamaCare legislation but did so expecting a certain veto from then President Obama. Now, it appears that Capito may be the deciding vote determining if the funding stays. Her reluctance to make the exact same pro-life vote, now that passage would mean

Hans-Peter Fischer are the newest members of the Roman Rota, and mark the latest in a string of appointments Pope Francis has made this summer as part of his ongoing effort to restructure the Roman Curia. Hailing from the northern Italian diocese of Toronta, Fr. Pietracatella, a member of the Rota, has been named as it’s new Chief of Office. Fr. Fischer, a priest of the archdiocese of Frei

History is full of great quotations that people never said. One of the best lines comes from Vladimir Lenin. He described Russian progressives, social democrats, and other fellow travelers as “useful idiots” – naïve allies in revolution whom the Bolsheviks promptly crushed when they took power. Or so the legend goes. In fact, there’s no evidence Lenin actually spoke those words, at least in public. But no one seems to care. It’s a compelling line, and in its own way, entirely true. The naïve and imprudent can very easily end up as useful tools in a larger conflict; or to frame it more generously, as useful innocents. The result is usually the same. They’re discarded. History is also full of…Continue Reading
