By JEFF MINICK From Fire by Water: My Journey to the Catholic Faith by Sohrab Ahmari, Ignatius Press, 2019, 225 pages; order at www.ignatius.com or call 1-800-651-1531. In his foreword to Sohrab Ahmari’s From Fire by Water: My Journey to the Catholic Faith Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, OFM Cap., writes that “St. Augustine, whose own conversion took place in an age and in a climate not so different from Ahmari’s, would remind us that history is the great destroyer of human illusion and vanities. But it is also the great wellspring of personal and ecclesial hope….We should never underestimate the power of personal witness, because without a living example of love that people can see and follow, truth is mute…Continue Reading

St. John Paul II’s Abuse Record… Defended By His Longtime Secretary

April 2, 2019 Featured Today Comments Off on St. John Paul II’s Abuse Record… Defended By His Longtime Secretary

KRAKOW, Poland (CNA) — Stanislaw Cardinal Dziwisz, a personal friend and close collaborator of St. John Paul II, recently defended the Polish Pope’s record on the abuse crisis, which has lately come under criticism from some areas. “The emerging opinions that John Paul II was sluggish in guiding the Church’s response to the sexual abuse of minors by some clerics are prejudicial and contradict the historical facts,” the archbishop emeritus of Krakow wrote in a statement March 20. St. John Paul II “was shocked,” Cardinal Dziwisz said. “He had no intention of tolerating the crime of pedophilia in the Church and fought against it.” Cardinal Dziwisz was ordained a priest in 1963 by St. John Paul II, who was then…Continue Reading

North Korea Plagued By Continuing Food Crisis

April 1, 2019 Featured Today Comments Off on North Korea Plagued By Continuing Food Crisis

By JOHN J. METZLER UNITED NATIONS — Following the failed Hanoi Summit with the USA, North Korea is now sending mixed messages concerning its denuclearization and missile testing intentions. Pyongyang’s deliberately cryptic policy is likely meant to sow confusion and gain a negotiating advantage with the U.S. over Washington’s efforts to denuclearize North Korea. Nonetheless, despite diplomatic posturing, what remains clear is the riveting reality that North Korea still faces a humanitarian emergency which directly affects nearly half its population. While the quaintly titled Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) pursues a covert policy to develop neutrons for weapons proliferation over needed nutrition for its own people, the very same country faces significant food and medicine shortages. A new UN…Continue Reading

March 31, 2019 Featured Today Comments Off on An Open Letter To Vladimir Ashkenazy

By DONALD DeMARCO The pontificate of John Paul I lasted but thirty-three days. In the words of Carlo Cardinal Confalonieri, this Pope was like “a meteor that lights up the heavens and then disappears, leaving us amazed and astonished.” One of John Paul’s last actions was to review and revise the upcoming fourth edition of Illustrissimi (the most illustrious), a document that would contain his only human, spiritual, and pastoral testament. Illustrissimi is a series of open letters to illustrious individuals such as Charles Dickens, G.K. Chesterton, Mark Twain, Guglielmo Marconi, Saints Bonaventure, Francis de Sales, Teresa of Avila, and Therese of Lisieux. In each of these charming letters, the former Albino Luciani is able to insert a Christian message,…Continue Reading

He was outraged and wanted the nation to know why. “Mr. Speaker,” he said, “this is clearly a partisan railroad job.” “We are losing sight of the distinction between sins, which ought to be between a person and his family and his God, and crimes which are the concern of the state and of society as a whole,” he said. “Are we going to have a new test if someone wants to run for office: Are you…Continue Reading

By CHRISTINE ROUSSELLE WASHINGTON, D.C. (CNA) — U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced March 26 an expansion of the pro-life Mexico City Policy and the slashing of funds to the Organization of American States in response to its abortion advocacy. These new policies are designed to ensure that taxpayer dollars are not used to fund abortion or the promotion of abortion abroad. “The American people should rest assured that this administration — and this State Department, and our USAID — will do all we can to safeguard U.S. taxpayer dollars and protect and respect the sanctity of life for people all around the globe,” Pompeo said March 26. The State Department “will take all appropriate action” to implement the…Continue Reading

Heartbeat Bill Wins In Kentucky

March 27, 2019 Featured Today Comments Off on Heartbeat Bill Wins In Kentucky

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Kentucky’s House passed Senate Bill 9, a fetal heartbeat bill, by a vote of 71 to 19 the night of March 14. SB 9 bans most abortions in the state once a fetal heartbeat is detected. The measure requires anyone seeking an abortion to first determine if a fetal heartbeat is detectable, typically about six weeks into pregnancy. The bill now goes to Gov. Matt Bevin’s desk. Republican Rep. Chris Fugate sponsored SB 9 on the House floor. Fugate said for him, this bill is not political but is about the millions of babies that have been killed. In February, the Senate passed the bill by a vote of 31 to 6. While the bill was in…Continue Reading

March 26, 2019 Featured Today Comments Off on Among U.S. Military… Ban On Gender Transition To Take Effect In April

By CHRISTINE ROUSSELLE WASHINGTON, D.C. (CNA) — Troops enlisting and serving in the U.S. military will have to serve as their biological sex and are forbidden from transitioning to another gender, a new Department of Defense policy states. The policy was announced in a memo that was obtained by the Associated Press March 12. The policy will go into effect April 12. While not a ban on transgender persons in the military altogether, the new policy will presumably result in many transgender troops being discharged from the military if they wish to serve under a different sex, seek cross-sex hormones, or gender transition surgeries. The new policy has additional rules regarding gender dysphoria, a condition where someone identifies as a…Continue Reading
