By BILL DONOHUE (Editor’s Note: Catholic League President Bill Donohue on June 18 commented on remarks by Pope Francis that have been censored by the media.) + + + Pope Francis says gay couples cannot be considered a family. The media know he said this but, with few exceptions, they refused to run this story. The blackout, it is easy to prove, was intentional. On June 16, Pope Francis spoke to an Italian family association, and following his scripted remarks, he made some unscripted comments. He denounced those couples who screen for abnormalities in the womb, likening the decision to a Nazi-like tactic. “Last century,” he said, “the whole world was scandalized by what the Nazis did to purify the…Continue Reading

Holy Bashfulness Vs. Shame By ALICE von HILDEBRAND

June 21, 2018 Featured Today Comments Off on Holy Bashfulness Vs. Shame By ALICE von HILDEBRAND

My dear young friend, Years ago, Cardinal O’Boyle was discussing some sexual matters with a group of men; all of a sudden the cardinal noticed that a young girl had joined the group, and interrupting his talk, he said to her: “Please excuse me.” But he was immediately rudely rebuked by one of the men present who snapped: “It is clear that you consider sex to be dirty.” This remark inspired my next topic. We all know that nineteenth-century England was puritanical to the core. This attitude was deeply rooted in British society, starting with Queen Victoria and reaching to middle or low-class citizens. It was the predominant climate of the time. The gist of it was that sex was…Continue Reading

On The Role Of Beauty In The Spiritual Life

June 20, 2018 Featured Today Comments Off on On The Role Of Beauty In The Spiritual Life

By JAMES MONTI In recent years, thanks largely to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, the role of beauty in the sacred liturgy — and the appalling chasm created by its absence — has been a topic of frequent discussion among those concerned with a restoration of the sacred in divine worship — the beauty of the liturgical rites themselves as well as the beauty of the sacred art, architecture, and music provided for their fitting celebration. A subject perhaps less often considered but closely interrelated is the contribution that beauty makes, the role it serves, in that journey of a lifetime that we call “the spiritual life.” Perhaps no Catholic philosopher and writer of the past century has explored this subject…Continue Reading

NEW YORK (CNA/EWTN News) — The Superior Court of New York ruled June 8 in favor of Joan Sheen Cunningham, who had petitioned to move the body of her uncle, Venerable Fulton Sheen, to the Cathedral of St. Mary in Peoria. The body of the late archbishop is currently in St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City. The Diocese of Peoria welcomed the decision. “This is the second time that the Superior Court of New York has ruled in favor of Joan Sheen Cunningham’s petition,” read a June 8 statement from the Peoria Diocese. The judge, Arlene Bluth, ruled that “the location of Archbishop Sheen’s final resting place would not have been his primary concern” and that “it makes no…Continue Reading

By DONALD DeMARCO On the night of August 21, 1879, Mary, the Mother of God, appeared to a group of ordinary people in the village of Knock, County Mayo. She was flanked by St. Joseph on her right and St. John the Evangelist on her left. She said nothing and was described as being deep in prayer, her eyes lifted to Heaven. Those who witnessed the apparition stood or knelt in the rain for nearly two hours reciting the rosary. The site became a national shrine. Each diocese in Ireland now arranges an annual pilgrimage to the Marian shrine while the nine-day novena at Knock attracts around 10,000 pilgrims each August. On the centennial anniversary of the apparition, Pope John…Continue Reading

NEW YORK (CNA/EWTN News) — Responding to Fr. Thomas J. Reese’s recent suggestion that the pro-life movement abandon efforts to make abortion illegal and focus instead on reducing the number of abortions, Timothy Cardinal Dolan voiced grave concern with the proposal. “As chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee on Pro-Life Activities, I want to indicate my serious reservations about Reese’s strategy, considering it a capitulation to the abortion culture, and a grave weakening of the powerful pro-life witness,” the cardinal archbishop of New York wrote in a June 8 opinion piece at RNS. “Catholic tradition and basic human rights teach us that every human being has an inalienable right to life that must be recognized and protected…Continue Reading

June 14, 2018 Featured Today Comments Off on Christians In India Protest Attacks By Hindu Extremists

By MURCADHA O’FLAHERTY LONDON (ACN) — A senior Church figure in India has praised Christians for refusing to resort to violence when protesting against a growing wave of attacks by religious extremists who support the ruling nationalist party. Bishop Thomas Paulsamy of Dindigul, Tamil Nadu State, southern India, told the Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need that the state authorities have sided with militant Hindu aggressors rather than victimized religious minorities. In Tamil Nadu alone, there have been more than 15 violent attacks against Christians so far this year. About 20,000 Christians from at least 16 towns in the region have taken to the streets to demonstrate against sustained aggression directed at the faithful. The bishop described the…Continue Reading
