A New Look At Conversion Therapy

October 15, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on A New Look At Conversion Therapy

By MIKE MANNO We’ve written in these pages several times about the controversy over Sexual Orientation Change Efforts (SOCE). In case you’ve missed it, SOCE refers to efforts to help those with unwanted same-sex attractions to overcome them. This is usually done through professional or religious counseling and is sometimes referred to as conversion or reparative therapy. SOCE has been controversial and has met with two objections from the LGBT community: It is ineffective, suggesting that sexual orientation is immutable and not subject to change; and it is harmful, causing depression and making people worse off than before. It has been so worrisome to the homosexual community that activists there have succeeded in having it banned for minors in several…Continue Reading

As Illegal Entry Issue Re-Emerges . . . Republicans Hope Kavanaugh Fight Energizes Them For Midterms

October 14, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on As Illegal Entry Issue Re-Emerges . . . Republicans Hope Kavanaugh Fight Energizes Them For Midterms

By DEXTER DUGGAN Will the force of Donald Trump’s strong will outmatch Democrats’ stubborn won’ts? First came Kava-no — the eventually failed Democrat strategy to block Trump’s selection of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. Then came hopes for Kava-mo — momentum for Republican candidates in the upcoming November midterm elections whipped up by Trump’s steadfast support that led to Kavanaugh’s impressive confirmation victory in the closely divided Senate. In an October 10 Politico article, presidential counselor Kellyanne Conway was quoted telling the Fox & Friends program that while history isn’t on the side of the majority party going into the midterms, “This is just a president who defies trends. And rather than repeating history, he tends to make…Continue Reading

Will Wonders Never Cease?

October 13, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on Will Wonders Never Cease?

By CHRISTOPHER MANION For several years after George W. Bush’s invasion of Iraq in 2003, many conservative groups stayed as far away as they could from the issue. “It would cut our donor list right down the middle,” one prominent leader told me in 2004. Confronted with Iraq and “Big Government Conservatism,” the conservative movement was divided — and, frankly, confused. So was the Republican Party. When Pelosi, and then Obama, came to power, it almost seemed inevitable. In 2016, Donald Trump didn’t deny those divisions — he made hay out of them. In the debates, Jeb Bush was forced to admit that the Iraq War was a “mistake,” but even that did not convince many of those who had…Continue Reading

Let’s Face The Illusions . . . About Roe, The Court, And The Kavanaugh Confirmation

October 12, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on Let’s Face The Illusions . . . About Roe, The Court, And The Kavanaugh Confirmation

By JACK KENNY Hold the “hallelujahs.” Brett Kavanaugh is now a justice on the U.S. Supreme Court, but don’t expect him to be the much anticipated and much feared “fifth vote” to overturn the High Court’s Roe v. Wade decision issued 45 years ago and upheld by the court on subsequent decisions, most notably, Planned Parenthood v. Casey in 1992. First of all, it is a considerable leap to assume that there are now four votes on the court to overturn Roe. The last two Republican nominees, Roberts and Alito, both said in public hearings that they regarded Roe as “settled law,” entitled to the protection of a due respect for “precedent.” Justice Scalia is dead and Clarence Thomas remains…Continue Reading

Even If He Looks Into Media’s Mirror… Jeff Flake Will Have Hard Time Finding A Profile In Courage

October 11, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on Even If He Looks Into Media’s Mirror… Jeff Flake Will Have Hard Time Finding A Profile In Courage

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — Like various other officeholders, Arizona’s Sen. Jeff Flake grew more comfortable with catering to the Beltway’s political glitterati than his own constituents, away back home. But he hadn’t been looking too happy recently even in that rarefied East Coast environment, where pleasing The New York Times feels more compelling than staying in touch with homeowners around his district office on East Camelback Road in Phoenix. Some Flake facial expressions in news photos ranged from distressed to miserable as he twisted in the gales of opinion about whether to confirm President Trump’s selection of Federal Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. Republican Flake already had become so unpopular in the Grand Canyon State that he…Continue Reading

Beware Of Charity That Is Not True

October 10, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on Beware Of Charity That Is Not True

By SHAUN KENNEY By the time this reaches you, I suspect l’affaire Kavanaugh will have reached its dénouement, which is a fancy French word for saying it we can all go back to watching football. Many of my friends on the left have challenged me, not so much for my defense of Justice Brett Kavanaugh as for my defense of due process and a presumption of innocence before guilt is ascertained — which, to many of those same friends, might as well be a defense of Kavanaugh sine qua non. The challenge brought up by the #MeToo movement bears remarkable similarities to the efforts by faithful Catholics to bring to light the sexual abuse scandal within the Catholic Church in…Continue Reading

Unbelievable!

October 9, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on Unbelievable!

By REY FLORES No, this is not about a certain accuser of the honorable Judge Brett Kavanaugh who wore out her fifteen minutes of infamy before we even knew her name, but I digress. This particular opinion column is more about the incredulity I experience about a lot of things that are taking place at this time in our nation’s history. It’s not that I’m unwilling to believe, it’s just that it’s difficult to accept that people have gone so incredibly mad, so much so that forecasts about insurrections, revolts, and a new civil war are increasing. A minority, yet still a considerable number of Americans of a certain political persuasion, have finally gone so far left that they have…Continue Reading

Civil Incivility

October 8, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on Civil Incivility

By MIKE MANNO In another life I was a public official, elected to the City Council of Davenport, Iowa. Municipal elections were, when I served, a partisan affair: I was in the 6-4 Democrat majority. At the time there was a little-known organizing group, ACORN, which had involved itself in party politics and was claiming to represent various neighborhood groups. Since most of the folks involved were active union members and well known to party insiders, we gave little thought to the group. But that was soon to change. ACORN turned out to be a very strident and vocal force within the party and soon had many of us divided over how to respond. Many of their complaints were seemingly…Continue Reading

Tough Attacks On Kavanaugh Show . . . Catholics Still Get Slimed If They Don’t Toe The Line

October 7, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on Tough Attacks On Kavanaugh Show . . . Catholics Still Get Slimed If They Don’t Toe The Line

By DEXTER DUGGAN Amid the conflicting claims made in the battle over confirming Federal Judge Brett Kavanaugh, a Catholic, to the Supreme Court, the fact stood out, and will continue to do so, that U.S. Catholics still can be dragged through the slime like criminals when they’re not on the politically favored side. For young girls to have to think their father was a serial rapist and drunkard, or part of a rape gang, is the price to be paid when upstart Catholics must be throttled into remembering how little they’ve advanced in the U.S. since the Irish-immigrant days if they don’t toe the line. White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders pointed out that leading liberal Democrat senators turned the…Continue Reading
