Their Madness, Not Ours

September 19, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on Their Madness, Not Ours

By CRAIG MONTESANO (Editor’s Note: Craig Montesano is a lobbyist and Catholic writer who serves as a lector at St. Matthew’s Cathedral in Washington, D.C.) + + + People out to gain your consent to their bad ideas, or bad behavior, often employ a clever device. They start off by stating a premise that appeals to common sense and then, quick as a wink, use terms to manufacture an artificial consensus for their errors. It is a time-honored rhetorical and polemical tool that can be found everywhere from Shakespeare’s plays to the editorial page of USA Today. And while we would expect politicians and activist scientists to be practiced in its use, it is disturbing to see how skilled certain…Continue Reading

Time To Clean House

September 18, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on Time To Clean House

By CHRISTOPHER MANION Catholics in the United States have decided that things have to change, but they’re not sure how to make it happen. We know that the bishops’ reaction to the abuse-and-cover-up scandals has failed miserably for 16 years. The faithful know it, and an increasing number of bishops are publicly admitting it. We can’t sweep it under the rug this time around. But it’s going to take time. We have to brace ourselves for a long, rough ride as investigations of chanceries nationwide reveal some very unlovely truths. It won’t be easy. Powerful factions in both the U.S. and the Vatican want to return to “business as usual,” the sooner the better. Pope Francis certainly does. An increasing…Continue Reading

A Leaven In The World… Careerism Enabled Cover-Ups

September 17, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on A Leaven In The World… Careerism Enabled Cover-Ups

By FR. KEVIN M. CUSICK The Lord protects some of us from falling into the careerist tendency in the priesthood, though not sometimes without a little cooperation from our own incompetence. There are others, however, who are not so lucky. Formation at the North American College in Rome, the “West Point” of seminaries, selection for further education, and then perhaps work at a congregation in Rome or the diplomatic track, and you’re in: Chances for becoming a bishop are thereby exponentially increased. But also increased is the temptation to live in constant concern for the next big opportunity: careerism. The Theodore McCarrick scandal, which has touched even Pope Francis, with questions now about whether he knew McCarrick had selected, groomed,…Continue Reading

A Movie Review… The True Power And Potential Of Love

September 16, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on A Movie Review… The True Power And Potential Of Love

By REY FLORES I have watched and reviewed many great movies and documentaries about God, faith, love, life, families, and marriage, but with much confidence I can say that Unprotected: A Pope, the Pill, and the Perils of Sexual Chaos is the best one thus far. I have not enjoyed learning so much about the value and frailty of human relationships as I did with this film. Unprotected is an absolutely beautiful and powerful tool. Each and every human being with a desire to truly love and be loved needs to watch this film. Its collection of views and honest heartfelt thoughts, opinions, and some painful memories and experiences will open one’s eyes to the true power and potential of…Continue Reading

Walk Toward The Fire Anyway

September 15, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on Walk Toward The Fire Anyway

By SHAUN KENNEY With all of the bad news in the Catholic Church, it might feel as if this is a time to despair — that the prophecies of our Lady are all coming to a fine point all at once. Allow me for just one moment to refocus the argument ever so slightly. Rather than a Catholic Church in decline in America, I want to show you a Catholicism that is on the march. For instance, over Labor Day weekend, four permanent deacons were ordained at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. That’s four vocations who are fully aware of the current crisis, and yet instead they run toward the fire. At the Catholic University…Continue Reading

The Classic Bob And Weave . . . When Will We Get Real Answers To The Abuse Crisis?

September 14, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on The Classic Bob And Weave . . . When Will We Get Real Answers To The Abuse Crisis?

By JOSEPH MATT The Vatican, still reeling from its shock after Archbishop Carlo Viganò’s testimony only weeks ago, is attempting to break its silence on the matter making several pathetic attempts  to respond to the current crisis. The first attempt seemed to be couched in a papal homily this past week given at Santa Marta, in which Pope Francis, reacting to the Viganò statement in his sermon, essentially blamed Satan for victimizing the bishops who are looking for answers in that statement. In his homily, he said: “In these times, it seems like the ‘Great Accuser’ has been unchained and is attacking bishops,” said Pope Francis September 11, as reported by Vatican News. “True, we are all sinners, we bishops. He…Continue Reading

Brace Yourself For Some Very Unsettling News

September 13, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on Brace Yourself For Some Very Unsettling News

By MIKE MANNO This is my fifty-second weekly column, which means I’m closing out my first year doing this. It’s been an eventful year filled with stories, both big and small, that will somehow affect every reader of this publication. During the past year I have commented upon and tried to expose those events, both legal and societal, that make up the growing crisis that we, as Christians and as Americans, face. Writing a weekly column, however, does not allow me to do more than scratch the surface of most issues and, simply by time and space limitations, forces me to ignore many others. There is one issue, however, that I have failed to report to you. It is, I…Continue Reading

Love Of Civility Disappears Fast… Pro-Abort Dems Whip Up Circus Of Chaos Against Kavanaugh

September 12, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on Love Of Civility Disappears Fast… Pro-Abort Dems Whip Up Circus Of Chaos Against Kavanaugh

By DEXTER DUGGAN Democrat Party fanatics — some of them babbling members of the Senate Judiciary Committee and some protesters screaming in the audience — quickly whipped up such chaos that two worried young ladies had to leave the hearing where they’d proudly come to see their father take another step to becoming an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Federal Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s daughters, Margaret and Liza, had to exit the turbulent Capitol Hill surroundings on September 4. The United States had just emerged from a week’s worth of brimming tributes by establishmentarians and left-wing Democrats to the civility and bipartisanship they said were exemplified by the recently deceased “maverick” Sen. John McCain (R., Ariz.). However, civility and…Continue Reading

As The Dust Settles, What’s Next?

September 11, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on As The Dust Settles, What’s Next?

By CHRISTOPHER MANION In the days since the publication by Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò of his extensive, detailed “statement,” a few things have become clear. Let’s start at the top: Pope Francis isn’t going anywhere. Good priests and laymen have called on him to resign, but the word is not in his vocabulary. The Pope has gone silent, the Vatican is in lockdown — a virtual sanctuary city. The Pope’s henchmen — under the circumstances, a charitable term — have gone on the offensive, borrowing the Knute Rockne rule for Notre Dame football: “The best defense is a good offense.” There is method to their massacre. On the plane back to Rome from Ireland, Pope Francis told inquiring journalists to…Continue Reading
