The Signs Of The Times

November 9, 2017 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on The Signs Of The Times

By FR. ROBERT ALTIER Thirty-Third Sunday In Ordinary Time (YR A) Readings: Prov. 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31 1 Thess. 5:1-6 Matt. 25:14-30 In the second reading today, St. Paul tells us we are children of the light and we are not of darkness. For this reason he says we are not to sleep like the rest do, but we are to be alert and sober. Unfortunately, we have been witnessing the drowsiness of many people when it comes to their faith. People are quite vivacious when it comes to the things of this world, of pleasure, or of selfish desires. However, when it comes to living the faith or serving the Lord, it seems that many have grown tired and have…Continue Reading

California Pro-Life Centers Win Against Forced Speech Law

November 8, 2017 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on California Pro-Life Centers Win Against Forced Speech Law

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — A California state trial court issued a permanent injunction on October 30 in The Scharpen Foundation vs. Kamala Harris against California’s AB 775, which imposes onerous notification and disclosure requirements on pro-life crisis pregnancy centers. Under this law, pro-life pregnancy centers are required to conspicuously post a message alerting all who enter that California offers free and low-cost abortions with a local phone number for more information. The Scharpen Foundation is represented by Bob Tyler, according to Liberty Counsel. All licensed and unlicensed pregnancy counseling centers in the state are required to post a government-prescribed message in their facilities and in their online advertising or be fined $500 for the first violation and $1,000 for each additional…Continue Reading

A Leaven In The World… The Weinandy Letter: A Devastating But Salutary Blow

November 6, 2017 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on A Leaven In The World… The Weinandy Letter: A Devastating But Salutary Blow

By FR. KEVIN M. CUSICK The crisis in the Church deepens. The silence of Rome, except to attack any questioning of the theological novelties of this pontificate, forces more and more of those who love the Church and her faithful to speak out. The refusal of the Holy Father and those designated to speak for him to engage with seriousness any who question them leave an increasing number of questions unanswered. Undispelled confusion is moving more individuals to seek clarity. Add to that number a distinguished and respected theologian. Fr. Thomas Weinandy, OFM Cap., wrote a letter to Pope Francis which was made public this past week. In my estimation it is a particularly devastating bombshell of a letter because…Continue Reading

The Sacraments Instituted By Christ… The Seven Sacraments Of The New Law

November 5, 2017 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on The Sacraments Instituted By Christ… The Seven Sacraments Of The New Law

By RAYMOND DE SOUZA, KM Part 1 Wanderer readers have seen articles about the book Defense of the Seven Sacraments Against Martin Luther, a masterpiece of Catholic apologetics written by King Henry VIII in his Catholic times, helped by the Great Defender of the Faith in England, St. Thomas More. I had the privilege to be the editor of the new Millennium Edition of the book and had it dedicated to Queen Elizabeth II, as a fraternal reminder of the happy days in which England and Rome shared one Lord, one Faith, and one Baptism (Eph. 4:5) in the One Church of God, the Pillar and mainstay of the Truth (1 Tim. 3:15). The book is available from my website,…Continue Reading

Degrees Of Holy Orders — Presbyterate

November 4, 2017 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Degrees Of Holy Orders — Presbyterate

By DON FIER The Sacrament of Holy Orders, as was reaffirmed last week, has been conferred and exercised in three levels or degrees — the episcopate, the presbyterate, and the diaconate — since the beginning of the Church. As highlighted in the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, all three “are irreplaceable for the organic structure of the Church” (n. 325). In fact, St. Ignatius, the third bishop of Antioch who was martyred in early post-apostolic times (AD 107), resolutely proclaimed: “Apart from these there is not even the name of a church” (Letter to the Trallians 3, 1; as cited in Catechism of the Catholic Church [CCC], n. 1593). In treating the episcopate last week, we saw…Continue Reading

Catholic Replies

November 3, 2017 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Catholic Replies

Q. I have been trying to read the Book of Revelation, but find it to be too confusing and too difficult to understand. Do you have any suggestions about how to proceed? — L.M., via e-mail. A. It would be helpful to study the footnotes in the book, say, in the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible version of Revelation. You might also get a copy of Peter S. Williamson’s book, Revelation, which provides an excellent commentary. And you will find useful Fr. Alfred McBride’s book, The Second Coming of Jesus. This is a much shorter commentary than the one by Dr. Williamson, but it offers some clarity about some of the puzzling passages in the last book of the Bible. Based…Continue Reading

Don’t Miss The Banquet

November 2, 2017 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Don’t Miss The Banquet

By FR. ROBERT ALTIER Thirty-Second Sunday In Ordinary Time (YR A) Readings: Wisdom 6:12-16 1 Thess. 4:13-18 Matt. 25:1-13 In the first reading we are instructed about Lady Wisdom and how she is found. We are told that she is readily found by those who love her and she does not disappoint those who those who watch for her. The thought of Wisdom is the perfection of prudence and whoever keeps vigil for her will be quickly free from care. So, we have to seek wisdom; it is not just simply given. Certainly, the Holy Spirit’s gift of wisdom is given by God, but even this has to grow and develop. Wisdom, as we see in the reading, does not…Continue Reading

Analyzing The Pope’s Unprecedented Letter To Cardinal Sarah

November 1, 2017 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Analyzing The Pope’s Unprecedented Letter To Cardinal Sarah

(Editor’s Note: Because of widespread interest in Pope Francis’ recent letter to Robert Cardinal Sarah, prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, we are publishing two commentaries on the subject below. Fr. Kevin M. Cusick references both these commentaries in his page-one column for this week’s issue of The Wanderer.) + + + Liturgy Expert . . . Pope’s Liturgy Reforms Risk Taking Catholics “Back To The 1970s” By DIANE MONTAGNA ROME (LifeSiteNews) — What might be the repercussions of Pope Francis’ public letter to Cardinal Robert Sarah, the Vatican’s liturgy chief, correcting him for seeking to rein in the Pope’s new liturgical decentralization? To gain perspective on the significance and potential impact of the…Continue Reading

A Leaven In The World . . . Is “Never Latin” The New Babel Of The Universal Church?

October 30, 2017 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on A Leaven In The World . . . Is “Never Latin” The New Babel Of The Universal Church?

By FR. KEVIN M. CUSICK (Editor’s Note: Because of the importance of this week’s column by Fr. Cusick, we are running it on the front page instead of its usual place on page 2B.) + + + Years ago when I was assigned for two years to Italy as a Navy chaplain, I entered upon a very intentional program of life. I was determined to learn the Italian language and thus obtain the key to understanding more deeply the rich complexities of Italian life, its culture and manners. I wanted to communicate with the people on their own level and to become their friend, sharing in their lives and having my own enriched as a result. I went “native” except…Continue Reading

The Sacred Liturgy . . . Presenting The Mysteries Of Christ

October 29, 2017 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on The Sacred Liturgy . . . Presenting The Mysteries Of Christ

By RAYMOND DE SOUZA Part 5 Why is it important to observe the proper rubrics of the Catholic liturgy? In order to avoid the “liturgical experiments” that have weakened people’s faith. These innovations have diminished the faith of the people, making the worship of God dependent on the subjective opinions and preferences of the famous “parish liturgical committees” who often invent new things to keep the people, especially youth, “entertained.” As if we went to church not to worship God in fulfillment of the Third Commandment, but to enjoy a good performance of music and sometimes jokes from the pulpit! On the contrary, the Church teaches us that in the sacred liturgy, the whole Christ is proposed to us in…Continue Reading
