June 8, 2022 Featured Today Comments Off on Pope’s Rebuke To Americans: Prospects For The Conclave

By PHIL LAWLER What message did Pope Francis send to the American Church by naming Bishop Robert McElroy to the College of Cardinals? How will his latest choices shape the prospects for the next papal conclave? Which other choices deserve a second look, and which prelates were conspicuously absent from the Pope’s list? Let me answer those questions, one by one.The message to American Catholics: Some analysts have suggested that the choice of Bishop McElroy is a slap at the U.S. Bishops’ Conference. It is more than that; it is a whole series of slaps:A slap at the full U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), which rejected Bishop McElroy’s bid to scuttle their mild statement on voters’ responsibilities — and…Continue Reading

JEFFREY John Adams, who would soon surrender the presidency to Thomas Jefferson, ventured up to Capitol Hill on November 22, 1800, to deliver the first-ever in-person presidential address in the not-yet-finished home of the United States Congress. It was noon on a Saturday. What message did he deliver?First, Adams congratulated the American people for building the Capitol itself.“I congratulate the people of the United States on the assembling of Congress at the permanent seat of their government, and I congratulate you, gentlemen, on the prospect of a residence not to be changed,” he said.“Although there is cause to apprehend that accommodations are not now so complete as might be wished, yet there is great reason to believe that…Continue Reading

Murder, Mayhem, And Moral Myopia

June 5, 2022 Featured Today Comments Off on Murder, Mayhem, And Moral Myopia

By DONALD DeMARCO We are repeatedly advised that what we eat, drink, and breathe is either beneficial or harmful to our bodies. As sensible consumers, we take this advice seriously. Therefore, we avoid bad cholesterol, high sugar drinks, and protest air pollution.By the same token, we are told that what we see, hear, and read are either good or bad for our souls. In this case, however, we do not take the advice very seriously at all. Therefore, not always acting as sensible people, but acting in accordance with our freedom of choice, we view salacious material, listen to acid rock, and read trashy novels. But what we put into our minds does not stay in our minds but eventually expresses…Continue Reading

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN Ideology is political religion, said the conservative sage Russell Kirk. And what is the defining dogma of the political religion, or ideology, of America in 2022?Is it not that, “All men are created equal”?Yet, as with every religion, a basic question needs first to be asked and answered about this defining dogma of liberal ideology. Is it true? Are all men truly created equal? Are all races and ethnic groups equal? Are men and women equal? Are all religions equal? Or do we simply agree to accept that as true — and treat them all equally? All Americans, we agree, have the same God-given rights to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” the same constitutional rights in the…Continue Reading

June 3, 2022 Featured Today Comments Off on Pelosi Should Convert To The Pro-life Cause

By TERENCE P. JEFFREY House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has developed a habit of invoking her Catholic faith — and often describing herself as a devout Catholic — whenever she is called upon to discuss her support for the deliberate killing of unborn children. On January 22, 2015, a reporter for CNSNews.com, where I am the editor, asked Pelosi about the humanity of a 20-week-old unborn child.“When it comes to the matter of whether or not an unborn child is a human being at 20 weeks gestation, what is your personal take on it?” the reporter asked. “If it’s not a human being then what do you believe it is?”“And as a mother of five, in six years, I have great standing…Continue Reading

Not All Abortion Protesters Are Equal

By BILL DONOHUE Catholic League President Bill Donohue commented May 20 on the Biden administration’s treatment of abortion protesters:A memo issued by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on abortion protesters was recently made public by Axios and NBC News. It warns that in the wake of the leak of the Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, abortion rights extremists “on both sides” merit scrutiny. News reports falsely argue that pro-life extremists have historically driven most of the violence. There is no evidence upon which this unwarranted accusation can be made. If anything, not counting the violence that defines the conduct of abortion clinics, it is pro-abortion extremists who have historically driven most of the violence.Leaving aside who has the…Continue Reading
