Resurrection To Follow?. . . Analysis Begins On “Underwhelming” Midterm Vote Result For GOP

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — I recently noticed a man at daily Mass at my parish wearing a black hoodie with a large image of a skull on his back. What biker gang’s member was showing off its colors? When I managed to read the words around the skull, it turned out not to be threatening a violent end to a gang’s enemies, but the classic Christian “memento mori” skeletal reminder that death comes to everyone, so be spiritually prepared for that day. If you’ve been good, resurrection follows.Appearances aren’t necessarily what they seem.Much analysis followed the November 8 midterm elections, including considerable surprise that the Republican Party didn’t do as well as anticipated.During a November 16 interview on Phoenix-based KKNT…Continue Reading

A Beacon Of Light… The Family Is A Great Gift From God

November 22, 2022 Frontpage Comments Off on A Beacon Of Light… The Family Is A Great Gift From God

By FR. RICHARD D. BRETON Jr. (Editor’s Note: Fr. Richard D. Breton Jr. is a priest of the Diocese of Norwich, Conn.) + + One of the greatest gifts the Lord has bestowed upon us is the gift of the family. The family is an essential part of God’s plan of creation. It is here that future generations are formed, and the plan of creation is maintained. There does exist a problem, however, regarding the dignity of the family. In today’s society there is a problem that exists when the dignity of the family is under attack. This attack occurs from all sides and continues the deterioration of the gift that the family is to society. This shouldn’t be surprising, considering…Continue Reading

The Catholic Roots Of Thanksgiving

November 21, 2022 Frontpage Comments Off on The Catholic Roots Of Thanksgiving

By DEACON MIKE MANNO As Thanksgiving approached I began thinking about what to write for a good Thanksgiving column, especially after last week’s column about my father, baseball, and youthful times in Philadelphia. As I wracked my brain for an idea, I remembered a friendship I developed as an aspiring novelist with another writer looking for her first publisher as well. She and I met in an online writers’ group and while we never actually met person to person, we did develop a friendship which lasted several years. She was a teacher and interested in children’s books and told me about the book on which she was working about the first Thanksgiving in what became the United States — it was not…Continue Reading

A Brief Introduction To Plato

November 20, 2022 Frontpage Comments Off on A Brief Introduction To Plato

By DONALD DeMARCO Plato’s philosophy is both systematic and encyclopedic. He covers virtually all the issues that belong to the realm of philosophy. Philosopher Alfred North Whitehead pays tribute to him by stating that all philosophy after Plato is merely a series of footnotes to the great thinker.Nonetheless, his philosophy is not difficult to grasp. I would like to exemplify this point by citing Euthyphro, one of his Dialogues. In this story, Socrates and Euthyphro meet at the courthouse. Socrates will be tried for corrupting the youth of Athens, while Euthyphro is filing a charge of homicide against his father. Socrates is a person who claims to know nothing, but is eager to learn. By contrast, Euthyphro, a soothsayer/theologian, is…Continue Reading

The Battle For Life Comes Close To Home

November 19, 2022 Frontpage Comments Off on The Battle For Life Comes Close To Home

By CHRISTOPHER MANION Well, the election is over — sort of — so governors, legislatures, and courts in fifty states will now be front and center in the battle for life as the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization takes effect.Unfortunately, the end of Roe v. Wade doesn’t mean the end of abortion. Of course, in some states with pre-existing or trigger laws, it did. But in other states it has had the unhappy consequence of actually expanding abortions.California, for example, now offers to pay mothers from other states to visit a California abortuary to end their baby’s life. Pro-abortion governors in other Democrat states, like Illinois and Maryland, are also promoting their abortion businesses, advertising…Continue Reading

What A Ride!

November 18, 2022 Frontpage Comments Off on What A Ride!

By JOE SIXPACK All good things must come to an end, and this column is no exception, but it’s been quite a ride. I’ve been writing (under various names), teaching, and evangelizing for almost thirty-five years. God has used me to make hundreds of converts and reverts through one-on-one and small group venues, articles, my weekly Sharing the Catholic Faith webinars, two columns, The Cantankerous Catholic podcast (https://cantankerouscatholic.com/), and my weekly parish bulletin insert program. But it’s through this column in The Wanderer that I’ve been able to fulfill a dream to regularly write for this paper, and to remotely make so many wonderful friends through your kind emails. Well, mostly they’ve been kind, but even the less charitable ones have…Continue Reading

November Surprise . . . After Nearly Two Years, Some Voters Aren’t So Unhappy With Their Suffering

November 17, 2022 Frontpage Comments Off on November Surprise . . . After Nearly Two Years, Some Voters Aren’t So Unhappy With Their Suffering

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — Democrat Bill Clinton was elected president for the first time, in 1992, with only a 43 percent plurality of the vote. Republican incumbent George H.W. Bush came in second with more than 37 percent, while third-party gadfly Ross Perot drained off a vital nearly 19 percent.Clinton portrayed Bush as out of touch with ordinary concerns, while Perot railed against wasteful spending. When Clinton’s Democratic Party faced his first midterm election two years later, in 1994, it lost a thumping 54 seats of the majority it held in the U.S. House, giving the GOP its first control of the lower chamber since 1952. Republicans ran against Clinton’s failed government health-care proposal. While the party in the White House…Continue Reading

Martyrdom: A Love Strong As Death For The Sake Of Truth

November 16, 2022 Frontpage Comments Off on Martyrdom: A Love Strong As Death For The Sake Of Truth

By JAMES MONTI In the Gospel of St. Mark, we read of our Lord solemnly affirming as the “first and greatest commandment” of the New Covenant what the people of Israel had been told to ingrain upon their hearts and keep ever before their eyes: “. . . you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength” (Mark 12:30).Volumes could be written about the full meaning and implication of these words, but one particular aspect to consider here is just how absolute, just how unconditional, just how uncompromising these words are. What our Lord is commanding is a love for Him that knows…Continue Reading

A Beacon of Light… What The World Needs Now

November 15, 2022 Frontpage Comments Off on A Beacon of Light… What The World Needs Now

By FR. RICHARD D. BRETON Jr. (Editor’s Note: Fr. Richard D. Breton Jr. is a priest of the Diocese of Norwich, Conn.) + + The world, as we know it, is deteriorating before our eyes and society is oblivious to this occurrence. So often we hear people discussing worldwide affairs and there ensues a debate of what the future will be like. In the end, the question that seems to linger in people’s minds is this: What does the world need today? The answer is quite simple, really. What the world needs is a return to the authentic belief of what it means to follow Christ. Finding what it means to follow Christ, requires knowing who Christ is. One of the…Continue Reading

Dad, Baseball, And The Phillies

By DEACON MIKE MANNO As I write this, we are all awaiting the returns from the mid-term elections. When they come in, I’m sure there will be a lot of time to ponder what it all means, and I’m equally sure there will be pundits aplenty to explain it all to us.But for now, I’d like to go back to last week when we celebrated the feasts of All Saints and All Souls, and — at least for me — watched the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series. Now you might wonder why a guy who grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, would be so excited about an East Coast team from Philadelphia. It’s very simple, both my parents were from…Continue Reading
