Let There Be Light

By GEORGE A. KENDALL In the Book of Genesis, God begins the work of creation by saying, “Let there be light.” And light is indeed the central theme of the creation, whether that be the old creation or the new creation in Christ. The parallel creation story which we find in the Prologue to the Gospel of John starts out with:“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God,” and goes on to say that “all things were made through him, and without him was made nothing that has been made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men, and the light shines in the darkness, and the…Continue Reading

A Visit From Old St. Nicholas… And One Hundred Fifty-Three Other Friends From Heaven

By JAMES MONTI An aging school gymnasium is just about the last place one would expect to find Heaven on Earth. Yet for two hours one Friday evening earlier this month, that is precisely what the school gym of my own parish became, thanks to a visit from an all-star cast of heroes — a collection of more than 150 relics of saints and blesseds, over 150 tiny corporeal mementos of the greatest men and women to walk the face of the Earth since the time of their Divine Master, with four relics of His earthly sojourn heading the collection.Over the autumn of 2021 and on through December, Fr. Carlos Martins of the Companions of the Cross has been traveling…Continue Reading

When Politics Poses As Precedent

By CHRISTOPHER MANION This week the Court issued a procedural opinion regarding the pending appeal of Whole Woman’s Health et al. v. Jackson. The case was brought by abortion providers challenging the Texas Heartbeat Act, also known as SB 8, that Gov. Greg Abbott signed into law earlier this year.In the same spirit that inspired their comments during the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization arguments on December 1, the Court’s abortion advocates warmly praised “stare decisis,” the doctrine of legal precedent. But what is “precedent”? And whose is it?Roe v. Wade was argued before the Court fifty years ago this week. In December 1971, abortion advocates urged the Court to abandon precedent, reflected in the deeply rooted American respect for…Continue Reading

How Does God Want To Be Worshipped?

Part 3 Let’s continue our examination of the proper way to participate in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The first thing here isn’t for everybody, but rather those who act as readers at Mass. The problem manifesting itself here is probably not the fault of most readers, as they simply may not know what they’re doing is wrong. Some readers may say something like, “The first reading is taken from the Book of Isaiah.” Are those the words in your missal/missalette? No. The words printed there are the only words a reader is authorized to say.Anything else is not in keeping with the order of the liturgy. Maybe that doesn’t sound like a big deal, but it really is. We’re…Continue Reading

Retired Reporter Dies Shortly Before Christmas . . . Like Other Changes In Society, Walking Into Newspaper Not Like It Was

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — In the evening I enter the unlocked side door at the large newspaper building. All is quiet and no one sees me. I ride the elevator to the third floor and walk down a hall past the photo lab. Still, no one sees me. Security guards work here, but they just walk occasional patrols. You might enter and leave the building without encountering one of them.I walk into the newsroom of the largest evening paper in Arizona. Because it’s after hours, no one is around. Just a few ceiling lights are on. Being an evening paper, the newsroom work hours begin at 6 a.m., in order to put the paper on doorsteps in the afternoon.Of…Continue Reading

At The First Christmas . . . Mary And Joseph Troubled In Spirit By Backlogged Supply Chains

By DEXTER DUGGAN “I’m sorry, Mary, there’s no room for us in this inn, either, because we don’t have our vaccination passports. The innkeeper demanded to see them. He said we must not be good Jews because the emperor himself — a very devout Jew, as he repeatedly reminds us all — says we are not true to our fathers’ faith if we do not obey whatever he commands.”“Oh, Joseph, what are we to do? We hardly even had the money to travel here because of the terrible inflation that our emperor has caused, which he claims really was caused by the old deposed emperor, who wasn’t even Jewish himself but had family members who were observant.”“Even if we wanted…Continue Reading

By FR. RICHARD D. BRETON JR. (Editor’s Note: Fr. Richard D. Breton Jr. is a priest of the Diocese of Norwich, Conn. He received his BA in religious studies and his MA in dogmatic theology from Holy Apostles College and Seminary in Cromwell, Conn.) + + Last week we began our explanation of the Sacraments of Initiation, and the importance Baptism has as the foundation of these sacraments. We learned that Baptism cleanses us from original sin and makes us a member of God’s family. In Baptism we also receive special graces to assist us on our journey of faith.Today we will examine the second Sacrament of Initiation, which is Confirmation. Simply explained, Confirmation is the sacrament that completes our…Continue Reading

Rejecting Gender Craze . . . Time For “A Great Light” To Shine Through Today’s Prevailing Insanity

December 19, 2021 Frontpage Comments Off on Rejecting Gender Craze . . . Time For “A Great Light” To Shine Through Today’s Prevailing Insanity

By DEXTER DUGGAN Pondering the ills of humanity, we may focus on how the fall from grace in the Garden of Eden afflicted all of us with original sin. But wasn’t God disappointed, too?Not in the sense that God has emotions like humans or otherwise is imperfect. But here He was, having created Paradise for His children, and Adam and Eve went right ahead and wrecked it for themselves and their descendants. It hardly seems likely God beamed and thought, “Good job!” Would a father who just gave the keys to ten mansions to his kids shrug and think “Oh, darn” if the offspring blundered and burned them all down in short order? Moreover, we know the Son of God seeks that…Continue Reading

Cardinal Gregory’s Dream, RIP

December 18, 2021 Frontpage Comments Off on Cardinal Gregory’s Dream, RIP

By CHRISTOPHER MANION Shortly after the November 2008 presidential election, Archbishop Wilton Gregory of Atlanta hailed Obama’s victory as “a great step forward for humanity and a sign that in the United States the problem of racial discrimination has been overcome.”A lovely sentiment? Indeed. But unfortunately, that wasn’t Obama’s plan. Yes, he could have inspired Americans to make the archbishop’s hopes a reality, with a peaceful country unified in the pursuit of liberty and justice for all. But the seasoned community organizer had something quite different in mind. And he’s been thinking it for a long time.As CEI’s Matt Patterson wrote in 2012, “Obama was schooled by disciples of [Chicago radical Saul] Alinsky himself, including Mike Kruglik, who remembered Obama…Continue Reading
