The Ministers Of Divine Justice

November 3, 2021 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on The Ministers Of Divine Justice

By FR. JOHN T. ZUHLSDORF (Editor’s Note: This commentary first appeared on One Peter Five. It is a reflection on the readings for the twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost.) + + Collect: Keep Thy household, O Lord, with continual loving-kindness, that by Thy protection it may be free from all adversities and devoted to Thy name in well-doing.Epistle: Ephesians vi. 10-17Gospel: Matthew xviii. 23-35 + + An image of the torments of Hell attributed to spiritual writers of note, in particular St. Augustine of Hippo (+430), caught my attention although I haven’t been able to snag the exact citation. Whether it goes back to St. Augustine, or, as some say, to St. Anselm (+1109 — who might have gotten it from…Continue Reading

The Lord Blessed Their Generosity

November 1, 2021 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on The Lord Blessed Their Generosity

BY FR. ROBERT ALTIER Thirty-Second Sunday In Ordinary Time (YR B) Readings:1 Kings 17:10-16Heb. 9:24-28Mark 12:38-44 In all three readings today we hear about trust and generosity. We see the heroic generosity of the widow who is willing to give the last of her bread to Elijah. She had already stated that when she and her son ate what remained they would die. Even with this, she was willing to give the little she had to Elijah rather than keeping it for herself and her son.In the Gospel we see the same kind of generosity in the poor widow who put two small coins into the Temple treasury. The coins did not amount to much, but they were all she…Continue Reading

The Deadly Denial Of Truth

October 28, 2021 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on The Deadly Denial Of Truth

By FR. KEVIN M. CUSICK What does a 900-year-old crusader sword discovered underwater by divers have in common with a rape on a Philadelphia commuter train last week? They both point to the fact that human nature hasn’t changed much, if at all, in the past millennia.Divers made the exciting discovery of a weapon dating to the Third Crusade in 13 feet of water. It’s easy for us to imagine a time when everybody had to be their own police force, body guard, and army combined. If you didn’t carry a weapon, you couldn’t defend yourself. If you didn’t defend yourself, there was no guarantee anybody else would. In those days you didn’t just call grab your cell phone and call…Continue Reading

No Cross, No Crown By

By MSGR. CHARLES POPE (Editor’s Note: Msgr. Charles Pope — https://msgrpope.com/internet/ — posted this on October 16. His homily was for the 29th Sunday of the Year. It is reprinted here with permission.) + + In the Sunday Gospel, the Lord Jesus speaks of crosses and crowns. The apostles have only crowns in mind, but Jesus knows the price of the crown. So, He must teach them and us that crowns — the things we value most — come only through the cross. It may help to review the context of this Gospel. Jesus is making His final journey to Jerusalem. He is on his way to the cross and has already announced this to His disciples on two occasions. Throughout…Continue Reading

Express Love Through Sacrifice

By FR. ROBERT ALTIER Thirty-First Sunday In Ordinary Time (YR B) Readings: Deut. 6:2-6Heb. 7:23-28Mark 12:28b-34 In the Gospel reading today, one of the scribes questions our Lord about which Commandment in the Law is the first, or greatest. Quoting Deut. 6, which we are given in the first reading, Jesus answers that the first commandment is to love the Lord with all our heart, all our soul, all our mind, and all our strength. The scribe concurs with Jesus’ response, and states that to love God this way is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices. Then Jesus acknowledges the scribe had spoken with understanding.I bring up this point because in the second reading, St. Paul speaks about…Continue Reading

Editor’s Note: We are starting a new series on Apologetics that is based on the book Catholicism & Reason. Please feel free to use the series for high schoolers or adults. Special Course On Catholicism And Reason (Chapters 3 and 4) When we talk about religion, we are talking about three things: God, myself, and the relation between God and myself. We have seen that God exists and that He is the cause of every other existing thing, including ourselves. Since He brought…Continue Reading

The Evil Tyranny Of Feelings

October 21, 2021 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on The Evil Tyranny Of Feelings

By FR. KEVIN M. CUSICK A comedian has come under fire recently for flouting the social and media transgender/LGBT juggernaut. He made the mistake of observing out loud that one is punished now more severely for questioning the trans false “gospel” that holds our world in bondage than one is for murder. Recorded at the Hollywood Bowl, he called out the disproportionate reaction to a crime against the “woke” LGBT false gospel in comparison with the taking of a human life. The comedian was referring in his comments to a rapper whose alias refers to an infant human. He is one of those recording artists who makes a kind of music where one does not sing, but rather talks, and at…Continue Reading

The Often-Disappointing Quality . . . Of The Prayer Of The Faithful

October 20, 2021 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on The Often-Disappointing Quality . . . Of The Prayer Of The Faithful

By MSGR. CHARLES POPE (Editor’s Note: Msgr. Charles Pope — https://msgrpope.com/internet/ — posted this on October 11. It is reprinted here with permission.) + + One of the parts of the Ordinary Form of the Mass that was restored from antiquity is the Prayer of the Faithful. In my mind, however, there is an often disappointing quality to the intentions as they are used today. They are either overly particular and ideological or, at the other end of the spectrum, perfunctory, and flat. Further, they often include prayers for the Pope, bishops, clergy, and also for the dead. But these sorts of prayers will be included in the Eucharistic Prayer. Why “predundantly” include them here? Some years ago, Peter Kwasniewski, in…Continue Reading

Making Jesus The Priority

October 18, 2021 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Making Jesus The Priority

By FR. ROBERT ALTIER Thirtieth Sunday In Ordinary Time (YR B) Readings: Jer. 31:7-9Heb. 5:1-6Mark 10:46-52 Making Jesus The Priority In the first reading today, the Lord tells the people of Israel who had been in exile to shout for joy, exult at the head of the nations, and proclaim praise. Why? Because the Lord has delivered His people and brings them back from exile to their own land.I think we can all see why this would be cause for great joy and rejoicing. Imagine what it would be like to suffer the day-to-day life of an exile for seventy years in a foreign land, then suddenly, by an act of the Lord Himself, to be freed from captivity and…Continue Reading
