Empire Of The Mask

August 26, 2021 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Empire Of The Mask

By FR. KEVIN M. CUSICK Life is now the opposite of a masked ball. At masked balls, the eyes and nose, or upper face, were covered in order to hide the identity of the wearer. The mouth was revealed to enable communication, laughter, eating, facial expression. And safety. We now have the muzzle. Covering the mouth and nose is not safe and threatens long-term psychological harm, particularly for children. We learn communication, how to love and be loved, by using our words and expressions to communicate the deepest and most beautiful emotions and affections. These transmissions are now completely blocked because they are covered. It will only be revealed in time how masking has harmed the development of our children. The authorities…Continue Reading

His Wrath is Not Turned Back . . . His Hand Is Still Outstretched!

August 25, 2021 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on His Wrath is Not Turned Back . . . His Hand Is Still Outstretched!

By MSGR. CHARLES POPE (Editor’s Note: Msgr. Charles Pope posted this commentary on August 18 and it is reprinted here with permission.) + + When reading Scripture that mentions the wrath of God, most think of His wrath in human terms. But we must be clear that God does not get angry the way we do. Further, our God is not moody: pleasant and patient one moment and then angry and punishing the next. No, God does not suffer from mood swings or throw tantrums. God is love; stably, serenely, and consistently so.So then what is God’s wrath? I have written on this topic in greater depth elsewhere. . . . However, for this post, allow me to summarize by…Continue Reading

Follow The Lord’s Commandments

August 23, 2021 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Follow The Lord’s Commandments

By FR. ROBERT ALTIER Twenty-Second Sunday In Ordinary Time (YR B) Readings:Deut. 4:1-2, 6-8James 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23 In the first reading today, Moses tells the people of Israel to be sure to follow the Commandments of the Lord exactly and, by doing so, they will give evidence of their wisdom and intelligence to the nations. Of course, the first question we must ask is: If observing the Commandments of God demonstrates wisdom and intelligence, what does a failure to live according to the ways of God demonstrate? When we consider the precepts imposed on the Jewish people, we must remember that many of the laws were added because of the disobedience of the people. Since everything is contained…Continue Reading

Editor’s Note: Due to the pandemic, we were unable to hold weekly classes for 22 tenth-grade Confirmation students, so we prepared a series of 14 lessons on the material, along with some questions to answer. If these lessons are of value to you, put them to whatever use you can. We will continue to welcome your questions for the column as well, so please send them along, either to the postal mailing address or the email address below, and we will interrupt this series to answer them. Special Course On Catholicism And Life — XI The Holy Eucharist was foreshadowed by a special bread called manna that God sent from Heaven to feed Moses and the Israelites in the desert…Continue Reading

Colorado Bishops: “Vaccination Must Be Voluntary”

August 19, 2021 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Colorado Bishops: “Vaccination Must Be Voluntary”

By FR. KEVIN CUSICK A number of Catholics have approached me to ask for my signature on letters requesting an exemption for religious reasons from the COVID vaccine. I’m glad to support the conscience rights of our faithful at a time when lawlessness seems rampant in society, and individual conscience is often trampled with impunity. For some time now the pattern has been growing of elected officials passing regulations or restrictions without regard to constitutional rights, in particular with regard to reaction to the COVID virus. The bishops of Colorado, it is worth repeating, have made a significant contribution to defending the rights of Catholics, and all believers, to exercise their right to choose to make their own health-care decisions. Because the…Continue Reading

By Breaking A Wooden Yoke, You Forge An Iron Yoke!

August 18, 2021 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on By Breaking A Wooden Yoke, You Forge An Iron Yoke!

By MSGR. CHARLES POPE (Editor’s Note: Msgr. Charles Pope posted this commentary on August 10 and it is reprinted here with permission.) + + Monday of the 18th week of the year, there was a powerful passage from the Book of Jeremiah. It is practical, profound, and sweeping in its implications, and it comes to us from the Lord through the mouth of Jeremiah the Prophet:“By breaking a wooden yoke, you forge an iron yoke!” (Jer. 28:13).Rather than looking at the historical meaning (i.e., that God was going to use Assyria to humble Israel), let’s consider what it means for us today. What is the wooden yoke if it is not the cross? Indeed, the Lord says as much: “Come to…Continue Reading

We Will Serve The Lord

August 16, 2021 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on We Will Serve The Lord

By FR. ROBERT ALTIER Twenty-First Sunday Of Ordinary Time (YR B) Readings: Joshua 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18bEph. 5:21-32John 6:60-69 In the Gospel reading today the people who heard our Lord talk about the Eucharist, particularly the necessity to eat His Flesh and drink His Blood, could not tolerate the Lord’s teaching and responded: “This saying is hard, who can endure it?” After this time, these people, who were among those who followed Jesus, walked with Him no longer. The faith is filled with teaching that some people find difficult. Some people cannot accept the teaching on the Trinity, other reject the Incarnation, many reject the doctrines regarding our Lady, and the moral teachings have been a cause of contention for many who…Continue Reading

Q. I have always thought that Judas was in Hell, but now I read that Pope Francis has said that we don’t know if Judas is in Hell. What are we to believe? — F.A., via e-mail.A. First of all, while we know that there are persons in Hell (the Blessed Mother showed the children at Fatima a horrifying picture of Hell “with demons and souls in human form…floating about in the conflagration . . . amid shrieks and groans of pain and despair,” recalled Lucia), we don’t know for certain the name of anyone in Hell. In a homily given during Holy Week of 2021, Pope Francis asked, “How did Judas end up? I don’t know.” He said that…Continue Reading

Help Restore Our Church

August 12, 2021 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Help Restore Our Church

By FR. KEVIN M. CUSICK Our small southern Maryland parish has had more than one reason to experience some uncertainty about our future lately. As I’ve related here in a previous column, we had to evacuate the church and set up for Mass in our parish hall last Lent. Our 100-year-old church ceiling needed urgent repair and, as a result, it was unsafe to remain in the church until repairs could be completed. Then Traditionis Pastores landed like a bomb in our lives, declaring that Traditional Latin Masses may not any longer be offered in parish churches like ours. Will it be possible to use our church once it’s restored? Our archbishop has given permission to continue liturgically as we’ve been doing thus…Continue Reading

Why This Should Trouble You…. Children Sing Lennon’s “Imagine” At the Olympics

August 11, 2021 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Why This Should Trouble You…. Children Sing Lennon’s “Imagine” At the Olympics

By MSGR. CHARLES POPE (Editor’s Note: Msgr. Charles Pope posted this blog on August 3 and it is reprinted here with permission.) + + In the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremonies, there was the sad spectacle of a children’s choir singing the John Lennon song, Imagine. While some just think of the song as “pretty,” the radical atheist/globalist words are a direct attack on things central to the existence of any civilization. Lennon imagines, with approval, a world without God, religion, or country. In effect no piety, no loyalties, and nothing worth dying for. He also dismissed the idea of Heaven, Hell and more than implies that religion, faith and God are the source of violence, greed and disunity. As you will…Continue Reading
