The Ark Of The Covenant

By FR. ROBERT ALTIER Solemnity Of The Assumption Of The Blessed Virgin Mary (YR B) Readings: Rev. 11:19a, 12:1-6a, 10ab1 Cor. 15:20-267Luke 1:39-56 Today we have the joy of celebrating the Assumption of Our Blessed Lady body and soul into Heaven. This is a wonderful day for humanity because we see the promises of our Lord being fulfilled in a human person. While it is true to say that in Jesus our humanity has been taken into Heaven, Jesus is a divine Person not a human person, so it makes sense that He is in Heaven, but we might still doubt whether or not His promises will be fulfilled in us. This feast is a resounding “Yes” to that question. Some…Continue Reading

The Weaponization Of Vatican II

August 5, 2021 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on The Weaponization Of Vatican II

By FR. KEVIN M. CUSICK We’ve heard much pontificating for quite a few years now about “mercy,” “tenderness,” and “seeking the margins.” We’ve also been lectured on the necessity of making a “mess.” Many of us have listened and tried to put these counsels into practice. Some of us were apparently making a mess but didn’t know it.And many of us have followed these papal urgings without at the same time marginalizing or brutalizing some at the expense of others. One would think that’s the Christian way of going about it. This is the wrong way of making a mess, apparently. Now, in the wake of the most cruel exclusion of the immemorial Holy Mass of our forefathers and saints, through…Continue Reading

Encouragement From The Early Church . . . Be Catholic To Save The World By Grace

By MSGR. CHARLES POPE (Editor’s Note: Msgr. Charles Pope posted this blog on July 25 and it is reprinted here with permission.) + + There are some who would have the Church step back to avoid persecution or giving offense. Perhaps there are assets like buildings and land to protect. And maybe some rapprochement with the world will attract more members. Or so the thinking goes. But a study of earlier periods of persecution reveals a different plan for the way forward: confidence, courage, boldness, and love — even for our enemies. Let’s look at some texts.St. John Chrysostom knew all about exile and persecution. At a difficult time for him and his flock, he preached from the following text of…Continue Reading

Do Not Grieve The Holy Spirit

August 2, 2021 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Do Not Grieve The Holy Spirit

By FR. ROBERT ALTIER Nineteenth Sunday In Ordinary Time (YR B) Readings: 1 Kings 19:4-8Eph. 4:30-5:2John 6:41-51 In the second reading, St. Paul tells us we are to do nothing that will grieve the Holy Spirit. He goes on to mention sins that grieve the Holy Spirit: bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, reviling, and malice. Instead, he says, we are to be kind, compassionate, and forgiving. By doing these things, St. Paul says, we are imitating God because this is the way He loves us and has forgiven us.According to St. Paul, we are to imitate God as His beloved children. This means what God holds as important, we should also hold as important. What God holds as offensive, we should…Continue Reading

Traditionis Custodes: Opportunity For Mercy

July 29, 2021 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Traditionis Custodes: Opportunity For Mercy

By FR. KEVIN M. CUSICK As one of the two parishes in the Archdiocese of Washington that offer the Traditional Latin Mass daily, my majority-traditional church family is now in a quite vulnerable condition after the publication of the motu proprio Traditionis custodes (TC).Following the 2007 publication of Summorum Pontificum I was sent in 2010 as pastor to St. Francis de Sales in Benedict, Md. The parish had already a small Traditional Mass community which had thrived since petitioning and receiving permission for offering the vetus ordo Mass in 1989 under the terms of St. John Paul II’s letter Ecclesia Dei.I found them to be a happy, charitable, and humble group who were quite content to simply pray in the…Continue Reading

Cardinal Zen Decries Pope’s Motu Proprio

July 28, 2021 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Cardinal Zen Decries Pope’s Motu Proprio

Joseph Cardinal Zen, in a statement translated by Diane Montagna, denounced Traditionis Custodes, Pope Francis’ motu proprio on the liturgy. His statement was entitled, “Why Do They See a Problem Where There Is None and Close Their Eyes to the Problem for Which They, Too, Are Responsible?”Cardinal Zen recalled how he warned about a document against the Traditional Mass in his June 12, 2021 blog, “and the blow has been no less severe because it was foreseen.”Zen added: “It came as a bitter surprise to me personally that the ‘widespread’ consultation never reached me, a cardinal and former member of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. In addition, during 2007-2008, I was Bishop of Hong Kong…Continue Reading

Live As Christians, Not Pagans

July 26, 2021 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Live As Christians, Not Pagans

By FR. ROBERT ALTIER Eighteenth Sunday In Ordinary Time (YR B) Readings: Exodus 16:2-4, 12-15Eph. 4:17, 20-24John 6:24-35 In the second reading today St. Paul tells the Ephesians that they are no longer to live as the Gentiles do. Considering that the people to whom he was writing were Gentile converts, it makes sense that he would need to instruct them to live as Christian people and not as pagans. Perhaps they were trying to find a way to continue to “be like everyone else,” or to “fit in.” Perhaps they were so accustomed to living in certain ways that they did not even think about changing some aspects of their lives when they were baptized.Regardless of the reason, some…Continue Reading
