Love God With Selfless Charity

By FR. ROBERT ALTIER Palm Sunday (YR B) Readings: Mark 11:1-10Isaiah 50:4-7Phil. 2:6-11Mark 14:1-15:47 Today, in the span of less than an hour, we recall the events that began with our Lord’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem and culminated with His Passion and death in merely five to six days. One notices the emotional switch of the people to hailing Jesus to calling for His crucifixion. This reminds us of our own emotional swings which range from feeling great love and zeal at one moment to falling into the most unfortunate of sins in the next moment. It reminds us that emotions are not logical and that we must be careful not to make our decisions based on our emotions. At the…Continue Reading

Hypocrites Unmasked

By FR. KEVIN M. CUSICK “You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!” (Matt. 23).The frauds have been unmasked. An episode in the Scriptures about hand-washing can shed some light. Just as a gnat was unclean and so was strained out of water or other liquid before drinking, so was washing hands also ceremonially purifying.“At that time, the Scribes and Pharisees from Jerusalem came to Jesus, saying, ‘Why do your disciples transgress the tradition of the ancients? For they do not wash their hands when they take food’” (Matt. 15).In the Holy Gospel for Wednesday of the third week of Lent, the Lord is attacked by His detractors among the scribes and Pharisees. They catch His followers…Continue Reading

What Price Was Put On Your Soul?

March 17, 2021 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on What Price Was Put On Your Soul?

By FR. JAMES ALTMAN Dear family, we just heard about Jesus making a whip and driving out the bad guys from the Temple. It’s a historical fact. It happened just before the bad guys orchestrated His crucifixion. Bad guys always crucify Jesus — directly on Calvary, or indirectly by persecuting or martyring His faithful ones. So, the question we can ask ourselves now is, whom would Jesus drive out of the Temple in our day? Who are the bad guys in our temples today? We know who the bad guys are. They are the ones who fail to keep His Father’s Commandments. These Commandments are not a confusing thing. There only are ten, and they have been around since Moses, about…Continue Reading

Jesus Is The New Covenant

By FR. ROBERT ALTIER Fifth Sunday Of Lent (YR B) Readings: Jer. 31:31-34Heb. 5:7-9John 12:20-33 In the Gospel reading today, we hear about some Greeks who came to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover. These people approach Philip (whose name is Greek) and ask to see Jesus. Philip brings this request to Andrew and the two of them go to Jesus to intercede on behalf of these people. The answer our Lord gives is very important for us to understand.Jesus begins His answer by stating the time has come for Him to be glorified. Within a few days prior, our Lord had made His triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Clearly, He did not see this as His glorification because He spoke of…Continue Reading

A Leaven In The World… Greedy For The Comfort Of Grace

March 11, 2021 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on A Leaven In The World… Greedy For The Comfort Of Grace

By FR. KEVIN M. CUSICK The mother of James and John was mistaken to request places for her sons, one at Christ’s left and the other at His right, in His Kingdom.“At that time, as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, He took the twelve disciples aside by themselves, and said to them, ‘Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and the Scribes; and they will condemn Him to death, and will deliver Him to the Gentiles to be mocked and scourged and crucified; and on the third day He will rise again.’ Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to Him with her sons; and…Continue Reading

The Godless “Synodal” Approach

March 10, 2021 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on The Godless “Synodal” Approach

By FR. JAMES ALTMAN Dear family, each year when I would begin to teach high schoolers at the best high school in the diocese (measured by the greatest Catholic identity), I would tell the kids that the number one thing that annoyed Fr. Altman was uninformed opinions. I didn’t mind if anybody asked any question. However, the most dangerous words out of anyone’s uninformed mouth were: “Well, what I think is. . . .” I would tell them that the simple fact is that my opinions did not count and — neither did theirs. That was a shocking statement to them. It also is shocking to our modernist American ethos. It is shocking because our modernist American ethos is imbued with…Continue Reading

We Need To Rejoice And Be Joyful

By FR. ROBERT ALTIER Fourth Sunday Of Lent (YR B) Readings: 2 Chron. 36:14-16, 19-23Eph. 2:4-10John 3:14-21 Today we celebrate Laetare Sunday, that is, the Sunday to rejoice or be joyful. Given the circumstances in the Church and in the world right now, many people would be hard pressed to find much to be joyful about. We see this same problem in the readings today, but we also see the great reason to be joyful. This dichotomy has been the pattern for several thousand years and it continues today. As children of God and members of Christ, we need to rejoice and be joyful. Therefore, we need to look at these two responses and learn how, in the midst of darkness…Continue Reading
