US judge grants injunction for Catholic employers seeking contraceptives coverage exemption

June 6, 2014 World News Comments Off on US judge grants injunction for Catholic employers seeking contraceptives coverage exemption

Published June 05, 2014 Associated Press OKLAHOMA CITY –  A federal judge has granted nearly 200 Catholic employers an injunction to temporarily prevent the U.S. government from forcing them to provide insurance coverage for contraceptives. The Catholic Benefits Association filed a lawsuit in March alleging that a provision of the Affordable Care Act forced them to violate their religious objections to contraception and abortion-inducing drugs. On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge David Russell of Oklahoma City granted an injunction that exempts members from any fines or penalties arising from not complying with the provision while their objections are litigated.

Praise God!” Credit: 40 Days for Life Lansing The prayer vigil and activism take place in front of what 40 Days for Life Lansing calls “the last, free-standing surgical clinic” in Michigan. Fetal models have long been an effective pro-life strategy

Abortion Killings Are Ignored

June 3, 2014 World News Comments Off on Abortion Killings Are Ignored

With the news of yet another mass murder, this time from a celebrity shooter, comes more cries from those seeking gun control. The shooter Elliot Rodgers is yet another example of the symptoms that plague our world. The son of an Assistant Director of the award winning sans gratuitously violent film “The Hunger Games” went on a violent stabbing/shooting spree in what was an apparent cry for help gone wrong. Once again the elephant in the room is hiding in plain sight while the obvious is being overlooked. Yes we lament the death of Rodgers’ victims while at the same time we make no accepted outcry over the deaths of the thousands of innocent people being killed right here in…Continue Reading

June 3, 2014 World News Comments Off on Survey: More Than Four In 10 Americans Support Controversial Contraception Mandate

Sarah Pulliam Bailey  Jun 2, 2014 (RNS) More than four in 10 Americans support the Obama administration’s controversial contraception mandate, which requires nonprofits and businesses to provide birth control even if they have religious objections. More than four in 10 Americans support the Obama administration’s controversial contraception mandate, which requires nonprofits and businesses to provide birth control even if they have religious objections. The poll from Public Religion Research Institute comes as the Supreme Court prepares to issue its decision in a challenge to the contraception mandate filed by the evangelical owners of the Hobby Lobby arts and crafts chain and a Mennonite-owned wood cabinetry business. Churches and houses of worship are exempt from the mandate, but nearly 100 nonprofits, colleges and universities and businesses run…Continue Reading

Vatican: Too early to confirm 2025 Orthodox-Catholic summit

June 3, 2014 World News Comments Off on Vatican: Too early to confirm 2025 Orthodox-Catholic summit

Josephine McKenna  Jun 2, 2014 VATICAN CITY (RNS) A Vatican spokesman said it’s premature to suggest a gathering between Catholic and Orthodox faiths to mark the 1700th anniversary of the first church council held in Nicea in 325 A.D. Despite cordial meetings between Pope Francis and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople during the pontiff’s visit to Jerusalem in May, the Vatican has rejected media reports that a 2025 event had been confirmed. “Several news agencies, publications and individuals have reported on this gathering as a fait accompli,” said the Rev. Thomas Rosica, a Vatican spokesman, in a statement. “No formal announcement of or convocation of this event has come from the Vatican. It is very early to jump to conclusions.” The two faiths…Continue Reading

St. Joan of Arc: A Guide for Every Age

May 29, 2014 World News Comments Off on St. Joan of Arc: A Guide for Every Age

May 29, 2014 Christopher Check Mark Twain, who considered his biography of Saint Joan of Arc, whose feast we celebrate Friday, to be his best work. He called the Maid of Orleans “easily and by far the most extraordinary person the human race has ever produced.” The story of St. Joan is well known by Catholics and non-Catholics alike, but we may be surprised to learn just how well it is known: There may be no medieval figure whose life is better documented than that of Saint Joan of Arc. The story of her life and of her liberation of France from the English had survived for centuries as a kind of French national myth, but it was, in fact,…Continue Reading

Marriage And Witness: What’s Going On At Notre Dame?

May 28, 2014 World News Comments Off on Marriage And Witness: What’s Going On At Notre Dame?

BY MICHAEL BRADLEY Wed May 28, 2014 09:39 EST May 28, 2014 (Public Discourse) – In October of last year, Iwrote here at Public Discourse about the University of Notre Dame’s unfortunate decision to participate in National Coming Out Day. I noted that, by encouraging celebration of identities rooted in proclivities toward acts that violate the truth of marriage, Notre Dame was failing in its pastoral duties to guide its students in love and in truth. These duties are rooted in its institutional vocation as a Catholic university, as articulated by the school’s Mission Statement. Several events on campus this spring have confirmed and deepened my belief that Notre Dame is failing to fulfill its pastoral duty to bear witness to the truth.

Pope: Unemployment And Migration Deserve Greater Solidarity And Cooperation

May 28, 2014 World News Comments Off on Pope: Unemployment And Migration Deserve Greater Solidarity And Cooperation

Vatican City (AsiaNews) – At a time of economic crisis, when “Unemployment is tragically expanding the frontiers of poverty,” and a large number of people are forced to emigrate, placing themselves at risk of human trafficking, we must “reinforce existing forms of cooperation, [. . .] establish new avenues for expanding solidarity,” and promote “the dignity of the human person,” says the pope in a message to Guy Ryder, director general of International Labour Organization (ILO), on the occasion of its 103rd session.

Professor Undermines Archdiocese’s Effort to Protect Schools’ Catholic Identity

May 28, 2014 World News Comments Off on Professor Undermines Archdiocese’s Effort to Protect Schools’ Catholic Identity

May 27, 2014, at 10:30 AM  |  By Matthew Archbold  | In an opinion piece that appeared recently in the Huffington Post, law professor Charles Reid, Jr., opposes an effort by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati to protect the Catholic identity of its schools, even while he teaches at a Catholic university. Reid, a law professor at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota, complains that Cincinnati’s new Catholic school teachers contract—which prohibits teachers from taking part in conduct contrary to Catholic teaching—is “tragic” and nothing short of the “self-destruction of Catholic schools.” But as archdiocese spokesman Dan Andriacco said earlier this year, the new contract is nothing new. “There aren’t any new expectations of our teachers in the 2014-2015 contract,” he reportedly said. “The…Continue Reading
