By Sarah Knapton, Science Correspondent 7:00AM GMT 24 Mar 2014 2086 Comments The bodies of thousands of aborted and miscarried babies were incinerated as clinical waste, with some even used to heat hospitals, an investigation has found. Ten NHS trusts have admitted burning foetal remains alongside other rubbish while two others used the bodies in ‘waste-to-energy’ plants which generate power for heat. Last night the Department of Health issued an instant ban on the practice which health minister Dr Dan Poulter branded ‘totally unacceptable.’ At least 15,500 foetal remains were incinerated by 27 NHS trusts over the last two years alone, Channel 4’s Dispatches discovered. The programme, which will air tonight, found that parents who lose children in early pregnancy…Continue Reading

The Truth About Obama’s ‘Catholic Roots’

March 23, 2014 World News Comments Off on The Truth About Obama’s ‘Catholic Roots’

By    Stanley Kurtz March 23, 2014 1:48 PM In advance of his Thursday meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican, the New York Times is portraying President Obama’s community organizing as a kind of Catholicism in practice.  In a front page, above-the-fold piece titled “The Catholic Roots of Obama’s Activism,” Jason Horowitz highlights the close alliance between Obama, his organizing mentors Greg Galluzzo and Gerald Kellman, and the Catholic Church. Obama’s frequent invocation of Chicago’s Cardinal Bernardin is referenced, along with Obama’s ties to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. Horowitz notes that the alliance reached the point where young Obama was effectively proselytizing for the Catholic Church. A fuller and more accurate account of Obama’s organizing paints a very different picture,…Continue Reading

March 23, 2014 World News Comments Off on Federal Judge Imposes First Same-sex ‘Marriage’ In One Of Mexico’s Most Conservative States

by Sofia Vazquez-Mellado Fri Mar 21, 2014 17:30 EST MEXICO CITY, March 21, 2014  (LifeSiteNews.com) – Last Tuesday, two women became the first homosexual couple to get “married” in the city of León, in Guanajuanto, one of Mexico’s most conservative states and in which same-sex “marriage” is illegal. The “marriage” followed a lawsuit filed by the two lesbians when they were denied a marriage license in September last year.  After suing the state in federal court they were granted an injunction forcing the state to “marry” them. The lawsuit was based on the Mexican Constitution’s first article, which prohibits discrimination for “sexual orientation.” However, in addition to being illegal in Guanajuato, article 156 of the Federal Civil Code lists “incurable…Continue Reading

By Simon Caldwell Catholic News Service MANCHESTER, England (CNS) — An English bishop asked Catholics to use Lent as a time to repent of sins committed on social media. Bishop Philip Egan of Portsmouth described the uncharitable use of blogs, Facebook and Twitter as a “grave matter.” Using social media for abuse or to attack the reputations of other people was a direct sin against the Eighth Commandment, forbidding people from “bearing false witness” against their neighbors, he said in a pastoral letter released March 19.

March 20, 2014 World News Comments Off on Cardinal Burke On Faith, The Right To Life, And The Family: English Exclusive

by Izabella Parowicz Thu Mar 20, 2014 14:02 EST Editor’s note: The following interview with Cardinal Raymond Burke, prefect of the Vatican’s Apostolic Signatura, by Izabella Parowicz was conducted in English January 7, 2014 and originally published in Polish by Polonia Christiana magazine (http://www.pismo.poloniachristiana.pl). It is republished exclusively here in English with permission. 1. Your Eminence, is it at all possible to be partially Catholic? Frequently we hear statements like: “I am Catholic but…” To what extent are Catholics allowed to compromise when it comes to defending human life, marriage and family?  The notion of “partial Catholicism” is a contradiction in terms, which reflects the current cultural tendency to individualism and relativism, in other words, the tendency to accommodate any reality,…Continue Reading

Synod 2014 On Marriage: Lots Of Smoke, But Hardly Any Mirrors

March 19, 2014 World News Comments Off on Synod 2014 On Marriage: Lots Of Smoke, But Hardly Any Mirrors

By Dr. Jeff Mirus  March 17, 2014 4:16 PM In my last Insights message, I prophesied that the media furor over divorce, remarriage, and the sacraments in the Catholic Church would not result, at the 2014 Extraordinary Synod and thereafter, in the same sort of breakdown in Catholic discipline that followed Vatican II (closing in 1965) and Humanae Vitae (promulgated in 1968). One reason I gave is that it is not the 1960s any more. This was shorthand for saying that the world and the Church are no longer teetering over the same precipice. The world has already fallen over, and the Church—in the light of Christ—is slowly mapping out a safer and surer path. People in the world are no…Continue Reading
