Thomas Aquinas and the Art of Making a Public Argument

June 23, 2016 breaking Comments Off on Thomas Aquinas and the Art of Making a Public Argument

Zenit.org June 22, 2016•Bishop Robert Barron I would like to revisit a time when people knew how to have a public argument about the most hotly-contested matters … There is, in many quarters, increasing concern about the hyper-charged political correctness that has gripped our campuses and other forums of public conversation. Even great works of literature and philosophy – from Huckleberry Finn and Heart of Darkness to, believe it or not, Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason – are now regularly accompanied by “trigger warnings” that alert prospective readers to the racism, sexism, homophobia, or classism contained therein. And popping up more and more at our colleges and universities are “safe spaces” where exquisitely sensitive students can retreat in the wake…Continue Reading

Pope: All of Amoris Laetitia is ‘sound doctrine’; ban the death penalty

June 22, 2016 breaking Comments Off on Pope: All of Amoris Laetitia is ‘sound doctrine’; ban the death penalty

Francis doubles down on Amoris Laetitia In the wake of substantial criticisms of his Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia, Pope Francis has stated that “everything” written in the document is “sound doctrine.” The remarks are especially pertinent in light of the first critical observations on the exhortation issued by Raymond Cardinal Burke which stressed that parts of the document were the Pope’s personal opinion and not to be taken as magisterial. Speaking at the opening of the conference of the diocese of Rome in the Lateran Basilica on June 16, Pope Francis said: “For your own peace of mind, I have to tell you that everything that is written in the exhortation [Amoris Laetitia

Valencia’s Card. Cañizares persecuted for defending nature, common sense against “gender theory”, homosexualist agenda

June 21, 2016 breaking Comments Off on Valencia’s Card. Cañizares persecuted for defending nature, common sense against “gender theory”, homosexualist agenda

I was in Spain recently, having breakfast – as one does – and, while munching the ubiquitous toast with tomato looked up at the TV only to see a discussion of Card. Canizares Llovera and the trouble he was in for giving what sounded like a really good sermon in Valencia. I shot a photo of the screen… it I can find it… Since then the Cardinal’s problems have multiplied. BTW… he had the nickname “Ratzingerino” for a while and had served as the Prefect of Divine Worship after Card. Arinze and before Card. Sarah. Here’s a good summary from Reason.com with my usual treatment: Spanish Cardinal Faces Criminal Charges for Homily Remarks Cardinal Antonio Cañizares faces hate speech charges…Continue Reading

Papal comments on cohabitation and civil marriage suggest a direction

June 19, 2016 breaking Comments Off on Papal comments on cohabitation and civil marriage suggest a direction

June 18, 2016 11:51 EST Edward N. Peters The pope’s most recent comments on marriage point in a disturbing direction but let’s address two important matters first. Point One. Cohabitation is not marriage. Largely overlooked amid the furor caused by Pope Francis’ rash claim that “the great part of our sacramental marriages are null”—an assertion reckless if false (which it is) and brimming with despair if true (which it is not), a claim followed not by an apology, an official retraction, or even a bureaucratic ‘clarification’ but instead by an Orwellian alteration of the pope’s words in Vatican records—overlooked, I say, in this greater mess was the pope’s later but equally problematic comment about his being “sure that cohabitating couples…Continue Reading

Canadian Senate passes euthanasia bill

June 18, 2016 breaking Comments Off on Canadian Senate passes euthanasia bill

OTTAWA, June 17, 2016 (LifeSiteNews) — Canada’s Senate gave approval to the Liberal government’s Bill C-14 Friday, averting a standoff with the House of Commons over the controversial bill — which now only needs royal assent to become law. Senators voted 44 to 28 to accept the final version of Bill C-14, which outlines under what circumstances Canadians can be legally assisted to kill themselves, or be euthanized. Conservatives Don Plett, Tobias Enverga, and Independent Liberal Anne Cools were among those who voted in favor of the bill.

Too many couples do not understand marriage is for life, pope says

June 17, 2016 breaking Comments Off on Too many couples do not understand marriage is for life, pope says

ROME (CNS) — Because most people today do not understand that sacramental marriage really is a bond that binds them to each other for life, many marriages today can be considered invalid, Pope Francis said. Raising a point he has raised before, and one also raised by now-retired Pope Benedict XVI, Pope Francis insisted June 16 that the validity of a marriage implies that a couple understands that sacramental marriage is a bond that truly binds them to another for their entire lives. “We are living in a culture of the provisional,” he told participants in the Diocese of Rome’s annual pastoral conference. Answering questions after giving a prepared talk, Pope Francis told the story of a bishop who said…Continue Reading

For the world today, she has become the face of Christ’ Zenit.org•June 16, 2016•Eva-Maria Kolmann• An Indian prelate has described Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, who will be canonized by Pope Francis Sept. 4, 2016, as the “best missionary of the millennium.” Bishop Salvadore Lobo of Baruipur, who headed the canonization committee, reported that Christ had said to Mother Teresa in a vision: “Go into the houses, I cannot go alone, you be my face.” Indeed, “for the world today she has become the face of Christ,” the bishop said. Bishop Lobo said that Hindus are also convinced that she was a saint. He said: “Some Hindus wonder why the Church needs to go through a canonization process. They say, ‘Mother…Continue Reading

Pope: The ‘Our Father’ is the cornerstone of our prayer life

June 16, 2016 breaking Comments Off on Pope: The ‘Our Father’ is the cornerstone of our prayer life

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis said that prayers are not magic words for Christians and when we pray the ‘Our Father’ we can feel God looking at us and this prayer should be the cornerstone of our prayer life. His words came during his mass celebrated on Thursday morning in the chapel of the Santa Marta residence. Jesus always turned to the Father in the most challenging moments Taking his inspiration from the gospel reading where Jesus teaches his disciples to pray the “Our Father, the Pope’s homily was a reflection on the value and meaning of prayer in the life of a Christian. He noted that Jesus always used the word “Father” in the most important or challenging moments of…Continue Reading

Pope: ‘recognize the Lord in refugees, the poor, the disabled’

June 15, 2016 breaking Comments Off on Pope: ‘recognize the Lord in refugees, the poor, the disabled’

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis encouraged believers on Wednesday to open their eyes and hearts to God’s love for the poor and to the gift of healing that he offers to all who turn to him in faith. His words came during the weekly General Audience in St. Peter’s square as he continued his catechesis for this Holy Year of Mercy. The Pope reflected on Jesus’ miracle of restoring sight to a blind man on the way to Jericho as recounted in the Gospel of Luke. He said that the blind man was sitting on the roadside begging and pointed out that, until not long ago, a person with disability had no choice but to live on charity. “That blind man,…Continue Reading
