A Movie Review… Samson: A Real Hero

February 12, 2018 Featured Today Comments Off on A Movie Review… Samson: A Real Hero

By REY FLORES If I could do a one-word review of Samson, that one word would be “Wow!” This is one action-packed film that had me gripped from beginning to end. Thanks to this great new film from Pure Flix, our younger generations can learn about real heroes like Samson, not just fictional ones in bodysuits and tights. Based on Samson, the man chosen by God to deliver the Chosen People of Israel from the Philistines, actor Taylor James gives a great portrayal in not only the strength, muscle, and the long hair which are things we all know about Samson, but James has a great likability factor — the kind of guy that the ladies want to be with,…Continue Reading

The Role Of The Heart In Catholic Education

By DONALD DEMARCO I was watching the telecast of a baseball game between the Minnesota Twins and the New York Yankees. The Twins’ first baseman, Joe Mauer, was at the plate. The pitch count ran to 3 and 2 whereupon the unrelenting batter continued to foul off pitch after pitch. When the 13th pitch was about to be delivered, the broadcaster informed his audience that this is the greatest number of pitches ever thrown to Joe Mauer in a single at bat. During his 14-year career with the Twins, he has had 7,417 plate appearances. I was amazed that this bit of information, which scanned a prodigious mass of data, could be retrieved so quickly. But this is the modern…Continue Reading

Young Eastern Europeans… Come To U.S. To Study Free-Market Ways With “Project Arizona”

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — Before he started bringing young Eastern Europeans to Arizona to study America’s economy-liberating free-market practices, Jacek Spendel was making money off Arizona — that is, selling the “Arizona” pizza popular at his Xpress Pizza store in Katowice, Poland. The pie had mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, and the Southwest’s jalapeno peppers, Spendel told The Wanderer after six young Europeans under his wing had made another stop on their three-month visit here to look into the customs and practices they’re hungry to take back to their countries previously sickened by indigestible Communism. They spent a couple of evening hours at the offices of the Arizona Project Tea Party in north Phoenix on February 5, speaking to and answering…Continue Reading

As Abortion Vote Is Set… Irish Bishops Encourage Respect For Life

February 9, 2018 Featured Today Comments Off on As Abortion Vote Is Set… Irish Bishops Encourage Respect For Life

DUBLIN (CNA/EWTN News) — The Irish government announced January 29 that a referendum that could liberalize Ireland’s abortion laws will be set for a vote in late May or early June, sparking a call for respect for human life from the country’s bishops. “The innate dignity of every human life, from conception to natural death, is a value for the whole of society, rooted in reason as well as in faith,” stated Archbishop Eamon Martin of Armagh and Primate of all Ireland, in a recent pastoral message. “The Catholic Church, in common with other people of goodwill, teaches that ending the life of an unborn child, like the taking of any other innocent human life, is always evil and can…Continue Reading

Too Many Wars. Too Many Enemies.

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN If Turkey is not bluffing, U.S. troops in Manbij, Syria, could be under fire, and NATO engulfed in the worst crisis in its history. Turkish President Erdogan said Friday, January 26 his troops will cleanse Manbij of Kurdish fighters, alongside whom U.S. troops are embedded. Erdogan’s foreign minister demanded concrete steps by the U.S. to end its support of the Kurds, who control the Syrian border with Turkey east of the Euphrates, all the way to Iraq. If the Turks attack Manbij, the U.S. will face a choice: Stand by our Kurdish allies and resist the Turks, or abandon the Kurds. Should the U.S. let the Turks drive the Kurds out of Manbij and the entire…Continue Reading

Teaching Genesis… The Goodness Of Creation

By ARTHUR HIPPLER (Editor’s Note: Arthur Hippler is chairman of the religion department and teaches religion in the Upper School at Providence Academy, Plymouth, Minn. See the November 23, 2017 and January 4, 2018 issues of The Wanderer for more by Dr. Hippler on this topic.) + + + Try this sometime — when you are with a group of teenagers in a Catholic school or CCD, ask them what God created that He declared “very good.” Unless they are unusually well formed, they will tell you “man.” Since man is the crowning work of creation, “made to the image and likeness of God,” it logically follows for them that man is “very good.” The text of course contradicts this…Continue Reading

Ash Wednesday… The Greatest Fool Who Ever Lived

February 6, 2018 Featured Today Comments Off on Ash Wednesday… The Greatest Fool Who Ever Lived

By JEFF MINICK When she learned that Valentine’s Day falls on Ash Wednesday this year, my ten-year-old granddaughter moaned, “Nooooooo.” Her dreams of cake and candy hearts had just gone up in smoke. When I learned that Easter falls on April Fools’ Day this year, I thought, How appropriate. The Feast of Love, February 14, and The Feast of Fools, April 1, strike me as the perfect bookends for the Lenten season and its Easter Finale. After all, the Nazarene whose sacrifice, death, and Resurrection stamp their imprimatur on this season was the greatest of lovers. Caritas lies at the heart of His teaching. He commanded us to obey the two Great Commandments: to love God and to love our…Continue Reading

Should Old Aquinas Be Forgot?

By DONALD DeMARCO Some years ago I had the honor of meeting Fr. Enrico Cantore. It was around the time that his erudite work in atomic physics was being released by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In preparation for his book, Dr. Cantore had spent a considerable amount of time with the great physicist Werner Heisenberg. During our conversation, Fr. Cantore described Heisenberg as a man who was not content to remain within the boundaries of science. He studied virtually every significant thinker in the Western world in his ardent search for a key that would further clarify the unicity of truth and the harmony between faith and science. Cantore once asked Heisenberg, this voracious student of the history of…Continue Reading

A Book Review… Reporting And Right Opinion

By JUDE DOUGHERTY Rescher, Nicholas. Espionage, Statecraft and the Theory of Reporting: A Philosophical Theory on Intelligence Management. Pittsburgh: University of Pittsburgh Press, 2017. Pp. vii+179. Given the bias and irresponsibility of major print, audio, and visual media, this is a timely treatise on standards with respect to reporting, especially on matters of state. Nicholas Rescher modestly calls it: “A general introduction to the theory of reporting.” His focus is primarily on reports relevant to matters of state, that is, those involving diplomacy and warfare. Rescher comes to his topic with ample personal experience and academic credentials. A former Marine assigned to an intelligence unit, and a longtime professor of the philosophy of science at the University of Pittsburgh, with…Continue Reading

Archbishop Charles Scicluna of Malta has been selected to go to Chile to investigate new information brought forward by alleged victims of abuse. Some of the…Continue Reading
