When Shepherds Become Wolves

By SHAUN KENNEY The Catholic University of America announced last week that they were stripping Theodore Cardinal McCarrick of his honorary degree, the first time this has ever been done in the 140-year history of the nation’s premier Catholic institution. During the university’s long history, it has been no stranger to controversy. The Americanist heresy was first identified and rooted out, claiming the career of its first rector — Bishop Keane of Richmond. The ghost of Americanism hasn’t quite dissolved from the Catholic hierarchy in America. One of its chief errors as defined by Pope Leo XIII was that — as moderns — Catholics today were better suited to leverage and discern the Holy Spirit, an error condemned for no…Continue Reading

Fr. Pavone Says . . . Pastors Shouldn’t Fear Restrictions On Allowing Pro-Life Activity

By DEXTER DUGGAN Thanks to the Trump administration, pastors needn’t be concerned about their churches losing tax-exempt status because they’ve provided political information, a veteran priest and pro-life activist told The Wanderer during a July 30 telephone interview. While Fr. Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life (priestsforlife.org), reviewed various efforts that the Florida-based international Catholic organization is making to educate voters as the November midterm elections approach, he mentioned President Trump’s executive order issued in May 2017. “If there were ever a year when pastors do not have to be concerned about that,” Pavone said, Trump “has made so clear” through his executive order that “the federal government is not going to punish churches for speaking about politics.”…Continue Reading

Mid-Term Elections . . . Mean Traditionalists Need To Save Their Freedoms By Voting

By DEXTER DUGGAN The Democratic Party’s nominee for attorney general of Nevada, Aaron Ford, lashed out at pro-life crisis pregnancy centers in a July 18 tweet, calling them “fake health centers that have been lying to Nevada women.” Vote for me for AG, Ford said, and “I’ll stand up for a woman’s right to choose.” His political campaign denounced Ford’s Republican opponent this year, Wes Duncan, for having a “radical anti-choice agenda . . . dangerous for women’s health.” It probably didn’t comfort pro-lifers who serve pregnant mothers in distress that Nevada’s potential chief prosecutor from the Democrat side regards their work as spreading “false medical information” and “lies about safe and legal abortion methods” while consorting “with extremist organizations.”…Continue Reading

The Trinity Western Logic Of Canada’s Supreme Court

By MIKE MANNO Trinity Western University (TWU) is Canada’s largest independent Christian university. It began in 1962 as a junior college and now has 42 undergraduate and 17 graduate degree programs. As a Bible-based Christian organization TWU is governed by six core values: the authority of Scripture; pursuit of faith-affirming learning; having a transformational impact on the culture; servant leadership; and excellence in education. Its website clearly states: “At Trinity Western, students, staff, faculty, and administrators are all invited and encouraged to deepen their understanding of what it means to be disciples of Jesus Christ, to practice such discipleship, and to sustain and help others to be and become disciples. They strive to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly…Continue Reading

The Government “Charity” Virus Strikes Again

August 5, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on The Government “Charity” Virus Strikes Again

By CHRISTOPHER MANION Every few weeks a new letter arrives in our mailbox from CRS, the Catholic Relief Services. “Put your faith in action,” it says, suggesting that I send $100 because “it would really help.” You might have gotten one too. Would you like to “really help”? Relax. You already have. According to its latest filings with the IRS, CRS received $540,635,032 from you, the taxpayer, in FY 2016. That income accounted for 55.4 percent of the organization’s total revenue. In all the letters I’ve received from CRS in recent years, there is nary a mention of the fact that taxpayers “really help” CRS every April 15. But selective amnesia is common among “religious” Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) that receive…Continue Reading

A Turning Point For The Church?…We Shall See

August 4, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on A Turning Point For The Church?…We Shall See

By JOSEPH MATT This past week one of the highest-ranking American leaders in the Catholic hierarchy, Theodore Cardinal McCarrick, resigned from the College of Cardinals and was suspended from public ministry because of credible sex abuse charges. Many in the laity who had been convinced that the sex abuse crisis within the Church was in its latter stages and reaching a conclusion have been fooled again, but this time they are not standing still. The rage of the laity is beyond measurement at this time. Some are calling for special commissions, special prosecutors, and total withholding of funds for the Church. This outrage is totally justified after decades of countless diocesan scandals that have entailed multiple lawsuits, cover-ups, and payoffs…Continue Reading

A Parish Celebrates . . . “Humanae Vitae At 50” Welcomes Outstanding Speakers

By FR. SEAN CONNOLLY (Editor’s Note: Fr. Sean Connolly, a priest of the Archdiocese of New York, wrote a series on Fatima for The Wanderer during 2017.) + + + The soon-to-be St. Paul VI on July 25, 1968 promulgated his highly controversial encyclical letter, Humanae Vitae — “Of Human Life.” While its content still remains the most hotly contested of the Church’s moral teachings, it becomes more apparent with each passing year how right Pope Paul was in both reaffirming and clarifying the Church’s teaching on the nature, purpose, and dignity of married love. His reassertion that the use of artificial contraception is intrinsically evil and that the effects of its widespread acceptance would be detrimental to society have…Continue Reading

Contraception And The Catholic Deep State

August 2, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on Contraception And The Catholic Deep State

By SHAUN KENNEY Once again, Catholic Relief Services finds itself in hot water justifying the indefensible — cooperating with InterAction, a group committed to the funding of contraceptive services in direct opposition to the Magisterium. I have to start with a clear caveat. Bishop Gregory Mansour is a personal favorite of mine, as my mother’s family descends from Maronite Catholics (I myself being a Roman Catholic by virtue of my maternal grandfather). Mansour has shown every inclination toward being a faithful prelate who has a deep love for the Catholic Church and its charitable missions abroad. In fact, Mansour’s appointment as the head of Catholic Relief Services in late 2016 was deemed to be a breath of fresh air, after…Continue Reading

Is Putin’s Russia An “Evil Empire”?

August 1, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on Is Putin’s Russia An “Evil Empire”?

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN “History repeats itself, first as tragedy, then as farce,” a saying attributed to Karl Marx, comes to mind in this time of Trump. To those of us raised in the Truman era, when the Red Army was imposing its bloody Bolshevik rule on half of Europe, and NATO was needed to keep Stalin’s armies from the Channel, the threat seemed infinitely more serious. And so it was. There were real traitors in that time. Alger Hiss, a top State Department aide, at FDR’s side at Yalta, was exposed as a Stalinist spy by Congressman Richard Nixon. Harry Dexter White, No. 2 at Treasury, Laurence Duggan at State, and White House aide Lauchlin Currie were all exposed…Continue Reading

Leftist Radicals Then And Now

July 31, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on Leftist Radicals Then And Now

By REY FLORES Almost two decades ago back in my community organizing days in Chicago, I recall attending meetings and organizing political campaigns with a bunch of anti-American, anti-Catholic, and “anti-anything good” types of people who at worst were annoying, but hardly dangerous. We would plan rallies, protests, and demonstrations supposedly fighting against the loss of affordable housing, abuses against laborers both legal and illegal, and so on. I even organized a feminist rally against domestic violence once. Another time I helped organize a pro-amnesty rally with over 10,000 people in downtown Chicago. I even got to write a song about it and was invited to perform it in front of the crowd as part of the event. While my…Continue Reading
