Miss America, Mickey Mouse, The NFL, And More Madness

By REY FLORES A couple of weeks ago, Miss America pageant officials announced that the swimsuit portion of the pageant would be scrapped entirely. Political correctness, particularly the #MeToo movement, has infected and officially killed another traditional American institution. Is it a case of modesty, or of politically correct madness? Let me be clear. I agree wholeheartedly that a woman’s body should be respected as much as her entire being, but when a beauty pageant is no longer about beauty, then it should simply cease to exist. Instead, the “competition,” as it will be known from here on, has become yet another stage for fake feminism, liberal political tripe, and another lame attempt at erasing the natural attraction of the…Continue Reading

A Tale Of Two Cases — Both Misunderstood

June 18, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on A Tale Of Two Cases — Both Misunderstood

By MIKE MANNO Two cases popped up on my radar this week, both engendered strong passion, and the results of each are being misunderstood by those writing the news. One involves Iowa’s new Heartbeat Legislation and the other a Colorado baker by the name of Jack Phillips. Turning homeward first: On May 4 Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds signed into law Senate File 359, which is the most restrictive abortion law in the nation. The new law restricts abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, which is sometime around the sixth week of pregnancy. There are exceptions, such as conditions which endanger the mother’s life, rape which is reported within forty-five days, incest which is reported within one hundred and forty…Continue Reading

Trump Baits His Hook . . . Have 21st-Century Dictators Become Different When Prosperity Is The Lure?

June 17, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on Trump Baits His Hook . . . Have 21st-Century Dictators Become Different When Prosperity Is The Lure?

By DEXTER DUGGAN You mean that if President Franklin Roosevelt had suggested building flashy resort hotels to improve the economies for Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler, the bloody dictators would have renounced being political gangsters and become good guys? Highly doubtful, because those World War II bad guys were wedded to murderous statist ideologies that took precedence for them over burnishing their images by acquiring hotel swimming pools and fancy cuisine for tourists. Still, sanguinary Stalin’s aggressive Communist, atheist ideology didn’t prevent Roosevelt from embracing him as a U.S. ally against the equally reprehensible totalitarian exterminator Hitler. And capitalism perhaps hadn’t grown so visibly alluring yet, at that point in history, that it might tempt a totalitarian to trade his…Continue Reading

Does Humanae Vitae Need To “Mature”?

By CHRISTOPHER MANION Who wrote better stories than C.S. Lewis? Everybody loves his Chronicles of Narnia. They present in fiction many themes also addressed in his Screwtape Letters and Mere Christianity, but in a winsome way that only storytelling can. Take The Great Divorce. Who else could call divorce “great,” I thought, when I first ran across the book in my parents’ library years ago. Surprise! The story the book tells is not one of a broken marriage; rather, it is an allegory of a broken cosmos, sundered by a “Great Divide” greater than the breadth of the universe itself. That “Divorce” separates Heaven and Hell. Enjoying this captivating story requires that we set aside the Gospel passage where Dives,…Continue Reading

Behind Trump’s Exasperation

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN At the G-7 summit in Canada, President Donald Trump described America as “the piggy bank that everybody is robbing.” After he left Quebec, his director of Trade and Industrial Policy, Peter Navarro, added a few parting words for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau: “There’s a special place in hell for any foreign leader that engages in bad faith diplomacy with President Donald J. Trump and then tries to stab him in the back on the way out the door. . . . And that’s . . . what weak, dishonest Justin Trudeau did. And that comes right from Air Force One.” In Singapore, Trump tweeted more about that piggy bank. “Why should I, as President of the…Continue Reading

Can State Force Painter To Promote Satan?

By TERENCE P. JEFFREY (Editor’s Note: Terence P. Jeffrey is the editor in chief of CNSnews.com. Creators Syndicate distributed this column.) + + + When you drove down California Street through San Francisco’s Richmond District in the 1970s, one house made a stronger impression than most others. This was not because the house was an architectural marvel. It was a small, cookie-cutter Victorian. No, it stood out because it was painted black. From sidewalk to rooftop, every inch was coated in a uniform darkness. Its owner in those days was Anton LaVey, author of The Satanic Bible; and, years later, when it was about to be torn down, the San Francisco Chronicle would refer to it as “the building that…Continue Reading

CUA’s Renaissance… Should Not Be Impeded By The Likes Of NCR

By SHAUN KENNEY So the National Catholic Reporter — bastion of barely tolerable mummery from what remains of the over-50 crowd of aged-out hippie Catholicism — has decided to take aim at the Catholic University of America for its conservative-tinged orthodoxy (NCR, “Saving the Catholic University of America: The cardinals need to talk,” June 4, 2018). The author of the recent salvo is none other than Michael Sean Winters — because why have one first name, when two will do? Rather than dive into the muck of his vituperative first-person commentary regarding the Catholic University football team discussing their conquests over the weekend between deadlifts, let’s ask: Is the Catholic University of America in trouble? Does it require the attention…Continue Reading

Yours Truly Hits An Obstacle… Conservative Opinion May Not Flow So Freely Even In Internet Age

By DEXTER DUGGAN Spigots are important control mechanisms, and not only for hot-weather backyard water fights with the garden hose. In season and out of season, a big energy spigot is a vital valve for a nation’s economic health. Back when stereotypical sheiks had a hammerlock over oil flow, the United States was in a more fragile position, before the advent of freedom-friendlier alternatives like domestic fracking. At least as important to the national interest, the information spigot could control crucial decisions in the public forum that might turn upon what sort of facts flowed to voters, and in what volume. Thankfully, the fact-constricting days of “The Seven” media biggies lost their concrete chokehold with the advent of alternatives. It…Continue Reading

Are Catholic Colleges Still Catholic?

June 11, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on Are Catholic Colleges Still Catholic?

By MIKE MANNO A few weeks ago I wrote (once again) about free speech on college campuses, this time in connection with a report by the University of California at Berkeley which found that conservatives themselves were responsible for the sometimes violent campus protests against conservative speakers. (If that doesn’t make sense, go back and reread my May 24 column.) In that column there was a discussion of the bias against conservative speakers and groups, including the banning of Turning Point USA by several colleges, the discrimination against the Federalist Society on others, and the refusal of a Catholic school, Providence College, to protect a student who dared to speak on behalf of the Church’s view of marriage. At the…Continue Reading

After California Primary . . . November’s Predicted Blue Wave May Be Turning To A Trickle

June 10, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on After California Primary . . . November’s Predicted Blue Wave May Be Turning To A Trickle

By DEXTER DUGGAN California symbolism was in play during the Golden State’s closely watched primary election in early June. Some of the symbolism — waves — was close at hand for the Pacific Coast state. Another part — earthquakes — came from far away but perhaps was even more important. The touted upcoming November blue wave of liberal Democrat victories may have been turning into more of a dribble, while seismic shocks that rupture the landscape came from as far away as the other coast, in Maryland. No doubt California still is strongly liberal Dem territory down much of its populous western coastland, but its reputed firestorm of resistance to Donald Trump flickered less fiercely from the June 5 vote.…Continue Reading
