Are Catholic Colleges Still Catholic?

June 11, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on Are Catholic Colleges Still Catholic?

By MIKE MANNO A few weeks ago I wrote (once again) about free speech on college campuses, this time in connection with a report by the University of California at Berkeley which found that conservatives themselves were responsible for the sometimes violent campus protests against conservative speakers. (If that doesn’t make sense, go back and reread my May 24 column.) In that column there was a discussion of the bias against conservative speakers and groups, including the banning of Turning Point USA by several colleges, the discrimination against the Federalist Society on others, and the refusal of a Catholic school, Providence College, to protect a student who dared to speak on behalf of the Church’s view of marriage. At the…Continue Reading

After California Primary . . . November’s Predicted Blue Wave May Be Turning To A Trickle

June 10, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on After California Primary . . . November’s Predicted Blue Wave May Be Turning To A Trickle

By DEXTER DUGGAN California symbolism was in play during the Golden State’s closely watched primary election in early June. Some of the symbolism — waves — was close at hand for the Pacific Coast state. Another part — earthquakes — came from far away but perhaps was even more important. The touted upcoming November blue wave of liberal Democrat victories may have been turning into more of a dribble, while seismic shocks that rupture the landscape came from as far away as the other coast, in Maryland. No doubt California still is strongly liberal Dem territory down much of its populous western coastland, but its reputed firestorm of resistance to Donald Trump flickered less fiercely from the June 5 vote.…Continue Reading

Obama’s Secular Salvation Show

June 9, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on Obama’s Secular Salvation Show

By CHRISTOPHER MANION Ben Rhodes, a top adviser in the Obama White House, has just released a memoir, mostly a stack of straw but revealing one telling needle. Rhodes recalls a lame-duck Obama wistfully musing with his staff. “Sometimes I wonder whether I was 10 or 20 years too early. . . . Maybe we pushed too far. . . . Maybe people just want to fall back into their tribe.” What’s going on here? Did Obama’s fawning advisers wax in the glow — or did some sane secretary call the White House physician? Because this statement is a symptom of a serious illness. Psychiatrists have terms for it — narcissism and megalomania come to mind. But one psychology website…Continue Reading

Flawed Survey On Baker Yields False News

By BILL DONOHUE (Catholic League President Bill Donohue commented on reaction to the June 4 Supreme Court decision in Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission.) + + + In a Washington Post web blog, Eugene Scott informs readers that most Americans disagree with the U.S. Supreme Court decision that pitted a Colorado baker against two homosexuals. That conclusion is not validated by the data he cites. “Most Americans don’t support allowing gay Americans to be denied services because of the religious convictions of the business owner,” he said. He is right about that. But the wording of the question was deceitful, skewing the results. Scott cites a survey taken last month by the Public Religion Research Institute that supports…Continue Reading

Pope’s Personal Theologian… To Head Major Argentine Archdiocese

June 7, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on Pope’s Personal Theologian… To Head Major Argentine Archdiocese

By HANNAH BROCKHAUS LA PLATA, Argentina (CNA/EWTN News) — Pope Francis has appointed his personal theologian and ghostwriter Archbishop Victor Manuel Fernandez to head the Argentinian Archdiocese of La Plata, the Holy See’s press office announced June 2. Fernandez, 55, replaces Archbishop Hector Aguer, who turned 75 in May, the age at which diocesan bishops are required to submit letters of resignation to the Pope. Fernandez was replaced as rector of the Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina in April after serving in the position since 2011, and university officials told Catholic News Agency at the time Fernandez was hoping to be named archbishop of La Plata, considered to be the second most important Argentinian Archdiocese, after Buenos Aires. The archbishop…Continue Reading

Ireland’s Rout And The Failure To Lead Mise Eire…Poor, Lamentable Ireland

June 6, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on Ireland’s Rout And The Failure To Lead Mise Eire…Poor, Lamentable Ireland

By SHAUN KENNEY The faith that took St. Patrick a generation to build and lasted 1,600 years against Dane, Dutch, and English took one generation of Catholic bishops in Ireland to squander and destroy. There is no other explanation; there is no other place to lay the blame for the horrendous loss of Christendom’s final bastions – defeated, as the Irish always are, by treachery, connivance, and paid informers. St. John Vianney used to warn that when God wanted to punish a people, He would send them bad priests. How great the sins of Ireland must be! In 1983, Mass attendance in Ireland was in the high-80s. By 2006, that number had dropped to 48 percent. By 2011? 18 percent.…Continue Reading

But What About McCain’s Seat?… How Trump Keeps On Winning, Despite Media’s Whining

June 5, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on But What About McCain’s Seat?… How Trump Keeps On Winning, Despite Media’s Whining

By DEXTER DUGGAN The idea that a successful businessman would make a good politician had put down some roots over the years among Republicans, but it wasn’t necessarily true. The thinking was that such a person knew how to meet a budget, was an able administrator, could get results in the boardroom. All were presumed assets to carry into the political world. What better model could you have for an election campaign than wealthy “moderate” Mitt Romney, a business success and former Massachusetts governor? Yet even with media-favorite Sen. John McCain’s early support, Republican Romney still managed to lose the 2012 presidential race to chronically lying, divisive, radically pro-abortion and deeply left-wing incumbent Democrat Barack Obama. It helped Obama, of…Continue Reading

Betrayal By Globalist Pols . . . Russia Shows How Ireland Could Change Its New Pro-Abortion Ways

June 3, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on Betrayal By Globalist Pols . . . Russia Shows How Ireland Could Change Its New Pro-Abortion Ways

By DEXTER DUGGAN Just after the May 25 vote to legalize permissive abortion in the Republic of Ireland, Virginia resident Mary Ann Kreitzer recalled at her “Les Femmes — The Truth” blog the golden-calf scene in director Cecil B. DeMille’s 1956 movie version of The Ten Commandments. Many of the Israelites whom God had saved from slavery in Egypt had abandoned Him in the desert to disgracefully worship a worthless pagan idol made by their own hands. Irish celebrations of the victory for slaughtering infants reminded her, Kreitzer wrote, “of the Israelites’ orgy in the desert as they danced around the golden calf. But note, as you view the scene, the faithful Israelites who refused to join the festivities of…Continue Reading

Help For Faith-Based Adoption Agencies

June 3, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on Help For Faith-Based Adoption Agencies

By MIKE MANNO The movement started in Massachusetts, the first state to legalize same-sex marriage. The concept of discrimination against same-sex couples took root there, forcing Catholic and Christian adoption agencies out of business when they refused to adopt to same-sex couples. Following Massachusetts were bans in Illinois, San Francisco, the District of Columbia, California, and Philadelphia. The 2015 Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v. Hodges legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide gave rise to more legal challenges by the ACLU against private, Christian, and Catholic adoption services. Among others, suits have been filed in Michigan and Texas, challenging state laws, to force faith-based adoption agencies to serve homosexual and lesbian couples. The response by conservative, faith-friendly state legislators was to pass…Continue Reading

A Book Review . . . Can A Pope Change The Church, Just Because He Wants To?

June 2, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on A Book Review . . . Can A Pope Change The Church, Just Because He Wants To?

By CHRISTOPHER MANION Well, it all depends on what the meaning of “change” is, writes Ross Douthat, in a very readable account of the papacy of Pope Francis [To Change the Church: Pope Francis and the Future of Catholicism; New York: Simon and Schuster, 2018. 234 pp., $26.00]. Douthat describes himself as a conservative, which raises the cautious eyebrow, since he writes a weekly column for The New York Times. After all, his employer is notorious for refusing to review conservative books on its own best-seller list, as well as hiring “conservative” columnists who aren’t. But Douthat gives an account of his conservatism as well as his Catholicism: “a child and grandchild of divorce,” he came into the Church in…Continue Reading
