AMAC Seniors Organization . . . Stands Up For Right-To-Life Movement

February 22, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on AMAC Seniors Organization . . . Stands Up For Right-To-Life Movement

By DEXTER DUGGAN The president of a large national seniors organization that advocates conservative values told The Wanderer he was pleased with reaction to pro-life articles in the group’s quarterly magazine’s winter issue. The front cover of that issue of Amac Advantage, published by the Association of Mature American Citizens (amac.us), was entirely devoted to pro-life topics, including a large illustration of a baby and blurbs of three articles inside. The cover read: “Protecting the Miracle of Life. The gift of life has been under attack for decades in the United States. AMAC is taking a stand to expose the institutions that demean the sacred blessing of life, including Planned Parenthood and the Roe v. Wade ruling. We must give…Continue Reading

By DEXTER DUGGAN Catholicism and American Political Ideologies: Catholic Social Teaching, Liberalism, and Conservatism, by Stephen M. Krason, Hamilton Books, Lanham, Md., ISBN 978-0-7618-6977-1, 262 pages, hardback, $24.99, 2017. Available at amazon.com. House Minority Leader and leftist Nancy Pelosi, of San Francisco, conducted another of her famous Democratic Party prayer services on February 7 on behalf of young illegal aliens, holding the floor for hours as she cited Bible passages, the very denominational Catholic rosary, and the helpful Catholic hierarchy. Saith Nancy: How about saying the rosary on the House floor? Tellingly, the nearly 78-year-old Pelosi explained, for those who may not understand, that the rosary isn’t merely five decades of mysteries, but “the full rosary,” “15 decades of the…Continue Reading

Slippery Slope To Euthanasia

February 20, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on Slippery Slope To Euthanasia

By MIKE MANNO “Death with dignity,” they call it; others claim it is a “compassionate choice.” To me it is “doctor-prescribed death.” But no matter what you call it, it is the road to euthanasia; a path that has been tread by far too many venues already. The concept of voluntary — or even involuntary — death to prevent suffering goes back to the ancient Greeks and Romans and was a fairly universally accepted proposition in pagan societies. However, as Christianity spread throughout Europe, suicide — voluntary or not — became a moral issue and emphasis was placed on the dignity of life, as society tended to follow the teachings of the Church and life was treated as a gift…Continue Reading

The Shallow State

February 19, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on The Shallow State

By CHRISTOPHER MANION In recent issues, we have briefly described how the “Deep State” operates in the realm of government (September 28, 2017) and the Church (December 21, 2017). In both cases, seasoned bureaucrats have burrowed deep into the organization in order not to serve its purposes but to pervert them. As a result, in government, elected officials discover that their laws (with regard to the legislative branch) or their policies (with regard to the executive branch) are in some mysterious way turned into a train wreck caused by hidden forces which they can neither identify nor control. In the Church, bishops have created bureaucracies so large that they now depend on them, rather than vice-versa. And by what seems…Continue Reading

Republican Majorities . . . Still Don’t Cut Tax Funding To Big Abortion

February 18, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on Republican Majorities . . . Still Don’t Cut Tax Funding To Big Abortion

By DEXTER DUGGAN What was going through the mind of House Speaker Paul Ryan (R., Wis.) as he spoke to the huge national March for Life in Washington, D.C., on January 19? He said about anything the multitude could wish to hear, including this: “We’re making a lot of progress. In the House, we passed legislation to defund Planned Parenthood.” Less than a month later, however, when the two-year federal government spending deal was agreed to in the early hours of February 9, Planned Parenthood wasn’t losing its customary taxpayer funding. It never has, despite scandal after scandal, including the shocking 2015 video revelations of abortionists selling specifically ordered body parts of aborted babies. Although voters had given the GOP…Continue Reading

A Book Review… A Prominent Catholic Historian Stumbles In New Book

February 17, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on A Book Review… A Prominent Catholic Historian Stumbles In New Book

By CHRISTOPHER MANION Catholic historian James Hitchcock has been one of my favorites. When I first read his Catholicism and Modernity, I invited him to address a groundbreaking conference called to defend the family, held 40 years ago in Rockford, Ill. Several of his books line my shelf, and warm memories abide of his leadership roles in the Fellowship of Catholic Scholars, where his erudition was always appreciated. Some ten years ago, Dr. Hitchcock published a series of articles in the Human Life Review (HLR) which have now been developed into a book-length account (Abortion, Religious Freedom, and Catholic Politics, Transaction Publishers [now the Routledge imprint of Taylor and Francis]. Routledge currently lists these prices: Hardback $100 [sic]; Paperback $44.95.)…Continue Reading

Pope St. John Paul II… The Church’s Teaching On The Worthy Reception Of Holy Communion Can Never Change

February 16, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on Pope St. John Paul II… The Church’s Teaching On The Worthy Reception Of Holy Communion Can Never Change

By JAMES MONTI Those of you who read my preceding Restoring the Sacred essay of two weeks ago may recall that repeatedly I cited Marian passages from a 2003 encyclical of Pope St. John Paul II entitled Ecclesia de Eucharistia. Frankly I must admit that prior to the preparation of my last essay I was not previously familiar with this amazing text, penned by Pope John Paul toward the twilight of his pontificate. Perusing this text has proven to be a journey of spiritual discovery for me, and I return to it now to share with you the insights it offers regarding the fitting celebration of the sacred liturgy and the “hot button” topic of the worthy reception of Holy…Continue Reading

Philadelphia’s Archbishop Chaput… Reminds Men’s Conference Of Gospel Responsibilities

February 15, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on Philadelphia’s Archbishop Chaput… Reminds Men’s Conference Of Gospel Responsibilities

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — The archbishop of Philadelphia reminded a sold-out men’s conference here to stand strong for the work of the Gospel despite allurements of the passing age. “Just as memory anchors each person’s individual story, history plays the same role for cultures, nations and communities of faith. History is our shared memory,” said Archbishop Charles Chaput, OFM Cap. “When we Christians lose a strong grasp of our own history — our own unique story and identity — others will gladly offer us a revised version of all three — a version that suits their own goals and bigotries, and not necessarily the truth.” Chaput was one of the speakers to an audience gathered at Xavier College Preparatory…Continue Reading

Trump — Middle American Radical

February 14, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on Trump — Middle American Radical

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN President Trump is the leader of America’s conservative party. Yet not even his allies would describe him as a conservative in the tradition of Robert Taft, Russell Kirk, or William F. Buckley. In the primaries of 2016, all his rivals claimed the mantle of Mr. Conservative, Ronald Reagan. Yet Trump captured the party’s heart. Who, then, and what is Donald Trump? In a Federalist essay, “Trump Isn’t a Conservative — And That’s a Good Thing,” Frank Cannon comes close to the mark. Trump, he writes, “would more accurately be described as a ‘radical anti-progressive’” who is “at war with the progressives who have co-opted American civil society.” Moreover, Trump “is willing to go further than any…Continue Reading

Ontario Court… Assisted Suicide Trumps Doctors’ Conscience

February 13, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on Ontario Court… Assisted Suicide Trumps Doctors’ Conscience

By MIKE MANNO On the last day of January the Superior Court of Justice for Ontario unanimously held that policies promulgated by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) requiring doctors to either provide suicide assistance for patients, or refer them to another doctor that will, trumped the religious rights of the doctors. After the adoption of the policies, it wasn’t long before a collation of several Christian medical groups and several individual providers filed suit, alleging that the policies violated the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. “I find that the objective of the Policies is of sufficient importance to warrant overriding the Individual Applicants’ rights of religious freedom,” wrote Justice Herman J. Wilton-Siegel for himself and…Continue Reading
