More On Teaching Genesis, Chapters 1-3

January 2, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on More On Teaching Genesis, Chapters 1-3

By ARTHUR HIPPLER (Editor’s Note: Arthur Hippler is chairman of the religion department and teaches religion in the Upper School at Providence Academy, Plymouth, Minn. See the November 23 issue of The Wanderer for more by Dr. Hippler on this topic.) + + + Every Catholic schoolchild knows that the “six days” in Genesis are not six “twenty-four hour” days. But if you ask them how they know this, their reason is from outside Scripture, outside the text. They “know” from science the vast age of the Earth and indeed the universe, and hence the “twenty-four hour” day becomes unbelievable. While it is true that one should interpret the days as figurative, students should be lead to see the reasons…Continue Reading

Can Traditional Christians Serve As Judges? Political Correctness Suggests Not

January 1, 2018 Frontpage Comments Off on Can Traditional Christians Serve As Judges? Political Correctness Suggests Not

By MIKE MANNO If you thought the era of Trump had ushered out “political correctness” in the judiciary, sadly, you’re wrong. The latest example involve Kentucky family law Judge W. Mitchell Nance who was reprimanded by the state’s Judicial Conduct Commission and forced to resign. And what was his offence? Well it seems the good judge doesn’t believe it is in a child’s best interest to be adopted by a practicing homosexual. And he said so. And in addition to saying so he acknowledged his prejudice against gay couples adopting and, in order to maintain fairness in the judicial system he would recuse himself in any such case. Attorneys representing such adoptions should, therefore, notify him so the case could…Continue Reading

To Complement Pregnant Reporters . . . Why Not Have Photos Of Unborn Babies In Press Room?

December 31, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on To Complement Pregnant Reporters . . . Why Not Have Photos Of Unborn Babies In Press Room?

By DEXTER DUGGAN As a new year begins, why not consider doing a little redecorating around the White House, which already has had its walls rattling with the energy and earthquakes of the Trump administration’s first year. Why not add something new to the White House press room? There are already the American flag and a picture of the presidential residence behind the lectern. How about adding a few large photos of thriving unborn babies? President Trump could say these just are tributes to America’s future blossoming under him, the new generation about to make its appearance whose earthly lives might well last into the 22nd century. Avoid a direct confrontation like expecting the dominantly pro-abortion media to actually look…Continue Reading

2018: A Year Of Challenge, A Year Of Promise

December 30, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on 2018: A Year Of Challenge, A Year Of Promise

By CHRISTOPHER MANION Every new year offers the opportunity for resolutions. For 2018, Catholics everywhere can easily identify their most important one: to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Humanae Vitae. Why? Blessed Paul VI’s encyclical courageously and clearly resonates the Church’s teaching on marriage and the family that is indispensable to Western Civilization. When Jesse Jackson led students marching through the campus of Stanford University thirty years ago shouting, “Hey ho, hey ho, Western Civ has got to go,” his target was the Catholic Faith and Christendom. The Incarnation was the rock thrown into paganism’s pond, with ripples that revolutionized man’s pathetic plodding towards Hell with the promise not only of eternal life, but of civilized life here on earth.…Continue Reading

Did The FBI Conspire To Stop Trump?

December 29, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Did The FBI Conspire To Stop Trump?

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN The original question the FBI investigation of the Trump campaign was to answer was a simple one: Did he do it? Did Trump, or officials with his knowledge, collude with Vladimir Putin’s Russia to hack the emails of John Podesta and the DNC, and leak the contents to damage Hillary Clinton and elect Donald Trump? A year and a half into the investigation, and, still, no “collusion” has been found. Yet the investigation goes on, at the demand of the never-Trump media and Beltway establishment. Hence, and understandably, suspicions have arisen. Are the investigators after the truth, or are they after Trump? Set aside the Trump-Putin conspiracy theory momentarily, and consider a rival explanation for what…Continue Reading

Restoring The Sacred… God Has A Better Plan For 2018

December 28, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Restoring The Sacred… God Has A Better Plan For 2018

By JAMES MONTI For us as Catholics, the change of year that January brings is more than enough reason for some serious introspection. For the onset of a new year reminds us in no uncertain terms that we are a year closer to the grave and our eternal destiny. Beyond all the lighthearted celebration on New Year’s Eve, there are the bittersweet memories of the blessings and sorrows, sometimes very deep ones, that the old year brought. And there is the realization that the New Year about to begin is as yet an impenetrable, unfathomable, and awesome mystery — that it will bring its own succession of joys and sufferings as yet known only to God. Perhaps we have made…Continue Reading

Can The FBI Get Away With Getting Trump Team Emails?

December 27, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Can The FBI Get Away With Getting Trump Team Emails?

By ANDREW P. NAPOLITANO Within hours of his victory in last year’s presidential election, Donald Trump dispatched his lawyers to establish a nonprofit corporation to manage his transition from private life to the presidency. This was done pursuant to a federal statute that provides for taxpayer-funded assistance to the newly elected — but not yet inaugurated — president. The statutory term for the corporation is the presidential transition team, or PTT. In addition to paying the PTT’s bills, the General Services Administration, which manages all nonmilitary federal property, provided the PTT with government computers, software and a computer service provider. During the course of the PTT’s existence, the folks who worked for it sent or received tens of thousands of…Continue Reading

‘Tis The Season For “Bah, Humbug”

December 26, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on ‘Tis The Season For “Bah, Humbug”

By MIKE MANNO Well, it’s Christmas time again, it rolls around every year or so (I remember we had one last year) and every time it does it brings with it controversy and division. “Do you think that I have come to establish peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division” (Luke 12:51). If you’ve been following the political wars over Christmas in recent years you know, the Lord was right about bringing division, even more so now that political correctness has taken root in the body politic. The latest outrage involves a bus ad, or, more properly, a proposed ad designed by the Archdiocese of Washington, which was to have run on the sides and backs of…Continue Reading

Christmas: Gift Of The Holy Spirit

December 25, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Christmas: Gift Of The Holy Spirit

By GEORGE A. KENDALL When God acts, all three Persons of the Trinity participate in the action, so clearly, all three, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, took part in the Incarnation of the Word of God, the event central to Christmas. Here, I would like to reflect on the work of the Holy Spirit in making the Christmas story possible. “Chaire, kecharitomene.” These two words are, in St. Luke’s Greek, the Angel Gabriel’s greeting to Mary. The Latin translation of kecharitomene as gratia plena is usually rendered into English as “full of grace,” but the literal translation from the Greek is “graced one,” or “gifted one.” Both, I’m sure, represent aspects of the angel’s meaning. But I find that, as…Continue Reading

G.K. Chesterton And Christmas

December 24, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on G.K. Chesterton And Christmas

By JOHN YOUNG It is not surprising that G.K. Chesterton wrote a great deal about Christmas, because he was fascinated by the wonder of childhood, and Christmas is about the wonder of a Divine Child. Chesterton was a realist, and he saw realism exemplified in the outlook of the child, for no child doubts the reality of the world. Innocence, too, shines forth in the child. The child is fascinated by reality, a fascination that lessens as the child grows older. As Chesterton puts it, a seven-year-old is thrilled if you tell him that Tommy opened a door and saw a dragon; but a three-year-old is thrilled if you tell him that Tommy opened a door. Unlike most of us,…Continue Reading
