All It Takes Is Ten Dollars A Month

September 26, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on All It Takes Is Ten Dollars A Month

By SHAUN KENNEY One of the great things about Catholic culture — and concerning, if one takes into account what the counterculture and “reformers of the reform” have stolen from us — is the gold mine of Catholic thought surrounding us. Sure some of it is hard to find. Yet we have all sorts of places where we can go to find and appreciate Catholic culture in a world that is readily starving for Christ. Consider the following thought experiment, if you will. There are 75 million Catholics in the United States, give or take a few million. Of that, roughly two-fifths are practicing Catholics by the precepts of the Church — let us assume 32 million practicing Catholics in…Continue Reading

Moving At Breaking-Neck Velocity . . . Trump Dismays And Delights Backers, Leaving His Direction Unsure

September 25, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Moving At Breaking-Neck Velocity . . . Trump Dismays And Delights Backers, Leaving His Direction Unsure

By DEXTER DUGGAN President Trump definitely isn’t moving his legislative program through the balky Congress at breakneck speed. More like moss-neck speed, where the moss grows over the languishing bills in the Washington swamp until you can’t even read what’s written on them. However, there’s no doubt Trump has attained breaking-neck velocity, where he lunges so fast from a low to a high that his supporters are in danger of snapping their necks in two, trying to keep up watching where he’s going. And as for whether moss obscures what he’s saying, forget that. Trump can be so plain in what he declares that he leaves friends and foes reeling, respectively in delight or horror. Can his deeds match his…Continue Reading

How Deep Is The “Deep State”?

September 24, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on How Deep Is The “Deep State”?

By CHRISTOPHER MANION “The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power. Not wealth or luxury or long life or happiness: only power, pure power.” — O’Brien to Winston, in the Torture Chamber of the Ministry of Love (George Orwell, 1984) Over fifty years ago, Dan Smoot wrote a book called The Invisible Government. It described a number of powerful interest groups — domestic and foreign, totally undemocratic, and largely invisible to the naked eye — that sought to influence American foreign and domestic policy. In the main, he wrote, they had been largely successful. Smoot practiced the pre-Internet art known as pamphleteering — a…Continue Reading

Are There Moral Absolutes?

September 23, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Are There Moral Absolutes?

By ARTHUR HIPPLER (Editor’s Note: Dr. Hippler is chairman of the religion department and teaches religion in the Upper School at Providence Academy, Plymouth, Minn.) + + + In a world that presents a variety of customs and beliefs, there seem to be no universal standards, no moral “absolutes.” Moral relativism may seem modern, but people have long perceived the problem of conflicting cultural practices. The skeptic Sextus Empiricus (AD 160-210) observed that “some of the Ethiopians tattoo their children, but we do not; and while the Persians think it seemly to wear a brightly dyed dress reaching to the feet, we think it unseemly; among the Egyptians men marry their sisters, a thing forbidden by law amongst us” (Outlines of Pyrrhonism,…Continue Reading

Surrogacy And The Law

September 22, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Surrogacy And The Law

By MIKE MANNO Last week we took a look at some of the legal problems that arise from embryos remaining in cryogenic storage after in vitro (IVF) fertilization procedures. This week I want to take a look at the other side of the issue: what happens to the babies born from donated genetic material and implanted into a surrogate mother. There is a case out of California that is raising some eyebrows that has been appealed, but not yet accepted, to the U.S. Supreme Court. California, as you would imagine, has the most permissive surrogacy laws in the nation. About a half dozen states prohibit surrogacy contracts all together, about 16 recognize some form of surrogacy agreement, and about another…Continue Reading

Who Truly Imperils Our Free Society?

September 21, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Who Truly Imperils Our Free Society?

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN “The Barbarian cannot make . . . he can befog and destroy but . . . he cannot sustain; and of every Barbarian in the decline or peril of every civilization exactly that has been true.” Hilaire Belloc’s depiction of the barbarian is recalled to mind as the statues honoring the history and heroes of the Republic and of the West continue to be vandalized and smashed. A week ago, the statue of missionary and Catholic St. Fr. Junipero Serra was beheaded at the Santa Barbara Mission he founded. A century-old Columbus statue in Central Park was defaced and spray-painted with: “Hate will not be tolerated.” Baltimore’s monument to Francis Scott Key, who observed the bombardment…Continue Reading

E Pluribus Unum Or Not?

September 20, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on E Pluribus Unum Or Not?

By LAWRENCE P. GRAYSON The recent confrontation over a statue of Robert E. Lee in Charlottesville and its spillover into other cities demonstrate a pathological sort of love of country and a distorted attempt to erase its heritage. White supremacists, neo-Nazis, the KKK, and other extreme groups who practice bigotry, hatred, and violence can never be condoned. They may believe they are working to protect or purify foundational aspects of the nation, but their ideas are warped and their actions reprehensible. The 20th century provided vivid examples of extreme nationalism and its disastrous results. Similarly, destroying or defacing statues and monuments to personages deemed offensive to some in today’s society cannot be tolerated. The effort to eliminate all reminders of…Continue Reading

Dismember Title IX!

September 19, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Dismember Title IX!

By SHAUN KENNEY If our Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos can actually pull it off? Three cheers for Title IX dismemberment. For those who are slightly unfamiliar with the term “Title IX” and have children heading toward a college or university that accepts federal funds, be prepared to step into a rather dark and foreboding world. Title IX is a section of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which reads that no one should be discriminated against on the basis of sex. Seems rather innocuous at first, and it is — until one dives deeper into how this tiny section of federal law has been exploded to cover things such as gender dysphorias, transgenderism, and used to create tribunals where victims…Continue Reading

The Value Of All Human Life

September 18, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on The Value Of All Human Life

By REY FLORES (Editor’s Note: The Wanderer went to press this week just as all the confusion over the “DACA Deal” was breaking. Rey Flores’ column and the LifeSiteNews article below were both written before those developments.) + + + The recent debates about President Trump’s plans to wind down the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals — DACA for short — have once again drawn the ire and fury of the left-wing radicals. Predictably, the fake news media also jumped into action, all of them calling President Trump a white supremacist and a xenophobe. Whether it’s called DACA or the Dream Act, or whatever other legislation the left pushes to legitimize illegal immigrants, at the end of the day,…Continue Reading

But Dems Love Cutting Deals With Him… Trump’s Catholic Judicial Pick Angers Democrats

September 17, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on But Dems Love Cutting Deals With Him… Trump’s Catholic Judicial Pick Angers Democrats

By DEXTER DUGGAN Long ago having made malicious permissive abortion the core of its political ideology, the national Democratic Party has been swallowed by the resulting extremism of treating innocent preborn babies as malignant growths best destroyed by the millions, followed by the repellent extraction and sale of their human heads, hearts, brains, and other body parts. One reason for the rise of an unconventional politician like President Trump is that unscrupulous Democrats have driven away supporters who used to give them large congressional majorities, leaving the party starving for votes. And now, like a wild animal caught in a trap, national Democrats desperately chew off their own legs in public view. The depth to which these Democrats have sunk…Continue Reading
