Tribalism Marches On!

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN Recently, a columnist-friend, Matt Kenney, sent me a 25-year-old newspaper with his chiding that my column had been given better play. Both had run in The Orange County Register on June 30, 1991. “Is there no room for new nations in the New World Order?” was my title, and the column began: “In turning a stone face toward embattled Slovenia and Croatia, President Bush and Secretary of State James Baker have not only put America’s chips on the wrong horse. They have bet on a losing horse. “Can the U.S. Government seriously believe that a Yugoslavia of such disparate peoples, all of whom wish greater freedom, most of whose republics wish to be free of Belgrade,…Continue Reading

With Arpaio Pardoned . . . How About Turning Attention To Ethics Of The Judge Who Took Him Down?

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — Furthering two news events, President Trump called attention to baby Charlie Gard in early July and former Sheriff Joe Arpaio in late August. The seriously ill English baby was unknown to many before Trump tweeted his offer of assistance, which cast the president in a more sympathetic light while many news organizations took an impartial look at the case of the suffering infant being denied vital medical treatment. Arizonan Arpaio, well-known for discouraging illegal immigration, was saddled with burdens of media bias that favors open borders. But in providing a pardon to Arpaio, recently convicted of misdemeanor criminal contempt of court, Trump said nothing to refute assertions that both he and the Italian-heritage Arizonan are…Continue Reading

It Begins At Home And Among The Family

By SHAUN KENNEY One of Thomas Jefferson’s compliments to Benjamin Franklin when he was appointed ambassador to France was that no one could replace Franklin; Jefferson could only serve as his successor. As his successor, I owe a debt of gratitude to Mr. James K. Fitzpatrick for carrying the torch here at The Wanderer for as long and admirably as he has. Of the names of editors and Catholic columnists of the turn of the century, one really does have to consider the few names that remain outstanding — the legacy writers to whom the rest of us merely grasp. Fr. Richard John Neuhaus, Deal Hudson, R.R. Reno, and others certainly come to mind. Fitzpatrick’s work will remain the golden…Continue Reading

The Necessary Act Of Forgiveness

September 11, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on The Necessary Act Of Forgiveness

By REY FLORES “Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.” This has got to be the single most powerful plea, as well as an accord, to do God’s will when it comes to forgiveness. No wonder the Our Father is known as “The Lord’s Prayer.” When God commands us to love one another as He loves us, He isn’t just kidding around. He means this as a command and not a request. When we fail to forgive one another, we fail to love one another. The God we worship is a living and timeless God. He is the Alpha and the Omega. Like Him, His commands were not just words spoken in the past. He…Continue Reading

Multiculturalism For The Masses . . . But Politicians Assimilate All Too Quickly To Washington’s Ways

September 10, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Multiculturalism For The Masses . . . But Politicians Assimilate All Too Quickly To Washington’s Ways

By DEXTER DUGGAN Assimilation traditionally was a hallmark of becoming American. Old ways and old countries may not have been forgotten, but they were superseded by accepting U.S. citizenship and the united identity that was assumed to bring. The assimilationist standard, though, often seems set aside today. Mushrooming multiculturalism is pushed forward by those not so fond of the U.S. except as a place to hang their hats for a little bit while knocking down the customary walls around our selfish homes that established our separate existence in the world. Videos of screaming, defiant illegal aliens demanding that the U.S. dance to their tune more than prove they view this nation as their servant, instead of being a sort of…Continue Reading

After DACA, Faithful Are Hungry For Eternal Truths

By CHRISTOPHER MANION On Tuesday, September 5, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that the U.S. government was rescinding the “Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals” program, commonly known as DACA. As Sessions explained, DACA “essentially provided a legal status for recipients for a renewable two-year term, work authorization and other benefits” to some 800,000 adult illegal aliens. “This policy was implemented unilaterally to great controversy and legal concern,” Sessions added, “after Congress rejected legislative proposals to extend similar benefits on numerous occasions to this same group of illegal aliens. “In other words, the executive branch, through DACA, deliberately sought to achieve what the legislative branch specifically refused to authorize on multiple occasions. Such an open-ended circumvention of immigration laws was an…Continue Reading

The Yellow Kid And New Media

September 8, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on The Yellow Kid And New Media

By MIKE MANNO Anyone who has any appreciation for the history of the mass media will surely know about certain dates, events, men and women who made that history. And even the casual observers of history will at least recognize the names of Charles Dana, William Randolph Hearst, Horace Greeley, Joseph Pulitzer, Nellie Bly, Edward R. Murrow, and of the penny press, KDKA, Revolutionary pamphleteers, and the Harvest of Shame. But one name that does not roll easily off the tongue is that of Mickey Dugan, a cartoon character of R.F. Outcault, better known as the Yellow Kid. The kid appeared in a strip called Hogan’s Alley where he and a colorful ensemble of other characters lived in the tenements…Continue Reading

Remedial Education Under Fire — From The Left

September 7, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Remedial Education Under Fire — From The Left

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK One can understand why some readers of this column will be reluctant to give credence to a report prepared by the Center for American Progress (CAP). CAP is the think tank funded by George Soros and staffed at various stages of its existence by former members of the Clinton and Obama administrations, such as Tom Daschle, Neera Tanden, John Podesta, and Austan Goolsbee. The group describes itself as a “public policy research and advocacy organization dedicated to improving the lives of all Americans, through bold, progressive ideas.” But the old clichés about even broken watches being right twice a day and blind squirrels sometimes finding a nut apply here. It strikes me that, in spite of…Continue Reading

Trump Played Fair By Pardoning… Arpaio Was Railroaded By Legal System

September 6, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Trump Played Fair By Pardoning… Arpaio Was Railroaded By Legal System

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — Commenting on President Trump’s pardon of former Maricopa County, Ariz., Sheriff Joe Arpaio for misdemeanor criminal contempt of court, national conservative radio talk host Mark Levin raised the question on August 28 of what are people supposed to do when judges themselves defy the Constitution. Dominant media’s slant assumed that Arpaio actually was a “racist” who broke the law by policing against massive illegal immigration. But what if he was the victim of judicial manipulation that’s familiar to Arizonans who suffer under a corrupt open-borders establishment willing to destroy even prominent officials in the Grand Canyon State who don’t follow its line? Perhaps illustrating why Trump won the presidency after so many voters hoped he’d…Continue Reading

Helping The Catholic Alcoholic

September 5, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Helping The Catholic Alcoholic

By REY FLORES The fallen human, born with original sin, is not perfect, but there are absolutely no reasons we shouldn’t strive to be saints. Our life here is to work toward eternal life in Heaven with God, so it’s time to get to work, folks. As an alcoholic in recovery, I too have known the destructive results of a maddening and spiritual disease. Everything from coming from a broken home, to broken hearts and broken bones, it’s no fun out there in our self-imposed hell. The path of destruction left behind by alcoholics is not pretty. It can ruin lives — if not completely, at least partly. It can take a long time to recover one’s own life, if…Continue Reading
