Falling Dominoes In The Age Of Denial

July 1, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Falling Dominoes In The Age Of Denial

By CHRISTOPHER MANION It’s a tough time to be a Democrat. Joe Biden is now the frontrunner for the 2020 Democratic nomination for president. Nancy Pelosi has just been reaffirmed the leader of House Democrats. And Democrats have lost every special election this year. As their party’s most prominent leaders, Biden and Pelosi undoubtedly welcome Pope Francis’ tacit opening of the Eucharist to divorced Catholics who, with secular government approbation but without a valid annulment, live in a new “monogamous” situation of sexual intimacy known in the current vernacular as “remarriage.” But wait — aren’t both Pelosi and Biden validly married Catholics? Yes they are. But they also know how to use logic — at least when it suits them.…Continue Reading

Are Illinois & Puerto Rico Our Future?

June 30, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Are Illinois & Puerto Rico Our Future?

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN If Gov. Bruce Rauner and his legislature in Springfield do not put a budget together by Friday, June 30 the Land of Lincoln will be the first state in the Union to see its debt plunge into junk-bond status. [Editor’s Note: This column by Pat Buchanan was dated June 27.] Illinois has $14.5 billion in overdue bills, $130 billion in unfunded pension obligations, and no budget. “We can’t manage our money,” says Rauner. “We’re like a banana republic.” Speaking of banana republics, Puerto Rico, which owes $74 billion to creditors who hold its tax-exempt bonds, and $40 billion in unfunded pension liabilities, has already entered bankruptcy proceedings.

Unsayable Truths

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK I don’t hear it said much any longer, but there was a time when white parents were accused of racist motives if they “gave up” on their local racially mixed public schools in favor of private or church-related schools. I suspect the reason why we don’t hear this criticism much these days is that everyone knows that there are few white liberals who send their children to the dangerous and dysfunctional public schools in our major cities. There are too many examples of people like the Clintons, the Bidens, and the Obamas sending their children to expensive private academies in the Washington, D.C., area, to scold middle class parents who do the same.

Marching Against Sharia Law

June 28, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Marching Against Sharia Law

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK Marches sponsored by a group called ACT for America were held June 10 in several American cities to make the point that Sharia Law is incompatible with American democracy. There were some counterdemonstrations, but for the most part the demonstrations were peaceful, just a little pushing and shoving. I didn’t see any placards at the marches proclaiming “Rebus Sic Stantibus,” but they would have been apropos. Rebus sic stantibus (Latin for “things thus standing”) is a long accepted understanding in international law. It is the legal doctrine that holds that treaties between nations can be held invalid if circumstances change dramatically in the years after they are signed. It is common sense. We would not have…Continue Reading

Aftermath Of Arlington Gunfire… Society Keeps Sliding Downward, So Who Gets The Blame?

June 27, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Aftermath Of Arlington Gunfire… Society Keeps Sliding Downward, So Who Gets The Blame?

By DEXTER DUGGAN He had suffered for more than seven years under brutal North Vietnamese Communist captors before he and nearly 600 other American POWs were released in early 1973, with the Communists triumphant in the Southeast Asia war that they and left-wing media fought against the U.S. government. Air Force Capt. Edward Alan Brudno, captured in 1965, had been kept in solitary confinement for long periods and was deprived of news reports from the U.S. for years. A Marine pilot in an adjoining cell reportedly recalled Brudno as a tough little guy who wanted to be an astronaut, who hated the Communists, and “used guile and cunning to outwit the guards.” After a few months back home in the…Continue Reading

Catholic Pro-Life Camp Is A Great Family Opportunity

June 26, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Catholic Pro-Life Camp Is A Great Family Opportunity

By REY FLORES Summer vacation time for teens and young adults can sometimes be a challenge for families. They have several options, like taking up a summer job to either save money for college or simply to have their own “mad money” for their smartphones, gas, movies, or other fun activities. Some young people like to volunteer at any of a garden variety of nonprofits, helping the homeless or underprivileged children, but that usually isn’t the norm. At worst, a teen might waste his entire summer just bumming around playing video games, attached to his computers, tablets, or smartphones simply goofing off. For those of you who may be financially blessed enough to send your own teens, grandchildren, or help…Continue Reading

With Media Thumb On Scales Again . . . Anti-Trump Sales Pitch Still Produces Result Weighing Zero

June 25, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on With Media Thumb On Scales Again . . . Anti-Trump Sales Pitch Still Produces Result Weighing Zero

By DEXTER DUGGAN After the highest-spending race for a single U.S. House seat ever, more than $50 million, what was to result from outspent Republican Karen Handel’s victory in Georgia’s Sixth Congressional District contest? The symbolism weighed ten tons. Democrats and their media allies were desperate to prove that President Trump is despised by a nation aching to rebuke him, including when voting to fill congressional seats. The outcome weighed in for them at zero ounces. They failed. Bitterness and back-biting. As for a practical, not emotional, result, stay tuned. Early and strong Trump supporter Laura Ingraham told her national radio audience the morning after the June 20 victory, “I’m so happy I can barely see straight.” Handel won by…Continue Reading

The Long Hot Summer Begins

June 24, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on The Long Hot Summer Begins

By CHRISTOPHER MANION After Karen Handel’s victory in Georgia’s Sixth Congressional District, the Republican majority in Congress has the wind at its back. Republican Ralph Norman’s victory in South Carolina the same day makes it four out of four victories for the GOP in special elections this year to fill seats vacated by representatives appointed to senior jobs in the Trump administration. But the Republicans also face a strong headwind — the spreading violence of the radical left, energized by months of goading and abetting from major Democrats and resulting in violence from Washington to Chicago to Berkeley, culminating in the attempted “baseball massacre” of pro-life Republicans by an ardent socialist and Bernie Sanders volunteer. In congressional district offices across…Continue Reading

Bernie’s Comments On Christians… Weren’t Just Arrogant, They Were Unconstitutional

June 23, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Bernie’s Comments On Christians… Weren’t Just Arrogant, They Were Unconstitutional

By JONATHON VAN MAREN (Editor’s Note: Jonathon Van Maren graduated from Simon Fraser University in 2010 with a bachelor of arts degree in history. He is the communications director for the Canadian Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform. LifeSiteNews published this commentary. All rights reserved.) + + + While the fact that anti-Christian sentiment — and certainly contempt — underlies and animates the views of the progressive elites is no secret to anyone, rarely has there been an articulation of that bigotry as brazen as the meltdown of Sen. Bernie Sanders during the confirmation hearing of President Trump nominee Russell Vought. Red-faced and shouting, Sanders demanded to know how exactly Vought could possibly believe what orthodox Christians have always believed — and…Continue Reading

Suicide Of The West

June 22, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Suicide Of The West

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK One of the most discussed books in conservative intellectual circles in the mid-1960s was Suicide of the West by James Burnham, one of the editors of National Review at the time. Burnham’s thesis was that the moral relativism and one-world aspirations central to secular liberalism would result in a lack of national resolve that could threaten the survival of the Western democracies. I’d say the jury is still out. B.J. of Ft. Myers, Fla., writes to offer an analogous warning to modern Americans. B.J. informs us that there was a time when he was “a dedicated Democrat. I was a teacher from 1958 to 1965. My whole family were God-believing, Church-going Democrats.” That party affiliation ended for him when “Democratic judges…Continue Reading
