As Obama Concocts Crisis . . . Unlimited Invasion Headed By Freeway Into Your Life

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — He was a Latino, apparently in his 20s, with only a small sack in his left hand and a plastic gallon water jug, nearly empty, in his right — a stereotypical image of an illegal border crosser. It was about 8 a.m. on July 1, the desert temperature already in the 90s. He wasn’t on the border. This was on my neighborhood metropolitan Phoenix sidewalk as I walked to morning daily Mass at my parish church. He kept going and didn’t ask anything about seeking help. If you jumped into a car from this spot, depending on how hard you hit the pedal, the border-straddling city of Nogales is two to three hours to the southeast.

The CCC — An Undervalued Masterpiece?

July 12, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on The CCC — An Undervalued Masterpiece?

By PHILP TROWER The title and subject of this article were suggested to me by a conversation I recently had with three Catholic friends — a man and two women in a parish where I often visit. I have known them for a long time, but not perhaps as well as I thought I did. I will call them John, Mary, and Susie. John is a retired engineer. Susie, unmarried, is a retired hospital matron. Mary, who has scientific qualifications, is a widowed mother of a family. All three are faithful, if confused, practicing “cradle” Catholics. However, just how confused I only realized for the first time after we were talking about the Church and the faith the other day.…Continue Reading

Impeachment, A Bridge Too Far

July 11, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on Impeachment, A Bridge Too Far

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN Increasingly, across this city, the “I” word is being heard. Impeachment is being brought up by Republicans outraged over Barack Obama’s usurpations of power and unilateral rewriting of laws. And Obama is taunting John Boehner and the GOP: “So sue me.” Democrats are talking impeachment to rally a lethargic base to come out and vote this fall to prevent Republicans from taking control of the Senate, and with it the power to convict an impeached president. Still, Republicans should drop the talk of impeachment. For the GOP would gain nothing and risk everything if the people began to take seriously their threats to do to Barack Obama what Newt Gingrich’s House did to Bill Clinton.

Morality Clauses For Catholic School Teachers

July 10, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on Morality Clauses For Catholic School Teachers

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK Daniel J. Daly, associate professor and chair of the theology department at St. Anselm College in New Hampshire, wrote an article for the Jesuits’ America magazine on June 9 that deserves the attention of everyone — parents, teachers, and administrators — with an interest in our Catholic schools. He asks how we should deal with successful and dedicated teachers who violate the teachings of the Church in their private lives. Daly offers as examples a Catholic high school teacher in Washington state who was fired after it was discovered that he was married to a man; an unmarried woman who was fired from a Catholic middle school in Montana when it was discovered that she was…Continue Reading

Obama’s Dream World

July 9, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on Obama’s Dream World

By DONALD DeMARCO President Obama on June 14 delivered a commencement address to some 8,000 members of the graduating class of the University of California at Irvine. During his presentation, although his principal topic was the environment, he wanted to impress upon the graduates how much “progress” has taken place under his administration and since they graduated from high school. To this end, he including the statistic that “the number of states where you’re free to marry who [sic] you love has more than doubled.” While setting aside any concern for good grammar and common sense, he urged the members of his audience to fight climate change. The president’s reduction of marriage to the alleged love one person has for…Continue Reading

Frederick Douglass’ Example… Book Tells How To Remove “Racist” Label From Conservative GOP

July 8, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on Frederick Douglass’ Example… Book Tells How To Remove “Racist” Label From Conservative GOP

By DEXTER DUGGAN The cynical national Republican establishment helped boost its candidate to a narrow victory in Mississippi’s U.S. Senate GOP runoff by campaigning, in part, with a pitch to black Democrats that the other guy in the contest, a Tea Party conservative, wanted to prevent blacks from voting. The establishment’s “moderate” Thad Cochran snatched a victory in the June 24 runoff election over challenger Chris McDaniel after Tea Partier McDaniel impressively won the June 3 primary but lacked the necessary margin to avoid the runoff. The June 3 result was impressive because McDaniel successfully had taken on Cochran, a powerful, porkmeister, longtime Senate incumbent whom the establishment was desperate to keep in his Washington job. The black Democrats, who…Continue Reading

Immigration Crisis

July 7, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on Immigration Crisis

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK Is there a way to be both rational and compassionate when dealing with the flood of immigrant children pouring across our southern borders? I would assume that even the most tough-minded advocates for tightening our borders would be unwilling to live with scenes of United States border guards dumping Hispanic toddlers into the Mexican desert to fend for themselves. Where is the intelligent middle ground in this matter? I wrestled with that question one night in mid-June after listening to Bill O’Reilly call for a strong military presence to “secure our southern border.” It sounded good. Every other country in the world polices its borders; it is central to what makes a sovereign country sovereign. But…Continue Reading

Bioethics Expert . . . Notes Social Results Of Making Good Or Bad Choices

July 6, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on Bioethics Expert . . . Notes Social Results Of Making Good Or Bad Choices

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — Shortly before the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed the right of conscience for religiously sincere business owners as June and the court’s session concluded, a national legal expert in bioethics told some leading graduate students in Arizona that when he was in law school, he couldn’t have foreseen the sorts of issues being grappled with today. Speaking to the students here earlier in June, Nikolas Nikas, president, CEO and general counsel of the Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Bioethics Defense Fund (BDF), said a key question is whether the law is tied to morality or to the assertion of will. Listeners could discern that a moral standard for the law provides some reference point outside one’s own desires and…Continue Reading

Priestly Celibacy: Unnatural? Or…Supernatural? The Levitical Priesthood

July 5, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on Priestly Celibacy: Unnatural? Or…Supernatural? The Levitical Priesthood

By RAYMOND DE SOUZA, KM Part 2 The second type of priesthood in the Old Testament was the Levitical priesthood. It was established by God on Mount Sinai — whereto Moses took the people to offer sacrifice to God. There is one aspect of the Levitical priesthood that is often overlooked by those who read the Bible through anti-celibacy eyes: God our Lord imposed three conditions for the people to receive the priesthood, to become a priestly kingdom, a holy nation (Exodus 19:3-6). They were to a) be sanctified, symbolized by the washing of their garments (verse 10); b) keep themselves away from the holy mountain, and not even touch it, under penalty of death — it was God’s sanctuary,…Continue Reading

Tell The Imperial President: No More Wars!

July 4, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on Tell The Imperial President: No More Wars!

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN Barack Obama has asked Congress for $500 million to train and arm rebels of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) who seek to overthrow the government. Before Congress takes up his proposal, both houses should demand that Obama explain exactly where he gets the constitutional authority to plunge us into what the president himself calls “somebody else’s civil war.” Syria has not attacked us. Syria does not threaten us. Why are we joining a jihad to overthrow the Syrian government? President Bashar Assad is fighting against the al Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front and the even more extreme and vicious Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. In training and arming the FSA, we are enlisting in a cause where…Continue Reading
