Guilt By Association

September 24, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Guilt By Association

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK There was a time when serious students in college or high school would be familiar with the terms “arguing ad hominem” and the “post hoc ergo propter hoc” fallacy. I don’t know why our schools no longer introduce our young people to these errors in logic. Perhaps it is because they are in Latin and are thought to be outdated for that reason. Or it could be that our educators have concluded that these concepts can be taught without using the Latin terminology. There is something to the latter proposition. Informed younger Americans are aware that it is a mistake to conclude that an argument is erroneous simply because the person advancing it is a villain…Continue Reading

A Bizarre Papal Move

By ROBERT ROYAL (Wanderer Editor’s Note: Robert Royal is editor-in-chief of The Catholic Thing, which featured this column on September 14. It is reprinted here with permission. All rights reserved. (This letter from Pope Francis concerning Communion for divorced-remarried Catholics has received widespread comment in Catholic media. (We direct our readers to Dr. Edward Peters’ blog (canonlawblog.wordpress.com) for September 13 in which he writes, in part: “As hard as it might be to follow, my basic advice to ministers of holy Communion in the context of divorced-and-remarried Catholics is to ignore the coming furor over the Pope’s endorsement of an ambiguously worded document from some local bishops, and just follow the law of the Church, which is quite clear, unless…Continue Reading

Panel Of National Radio Hosts… Supports Working For Trump To Win Presidential Election

September 22, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Panel Of National Radio Hosts… Supports Working For Trump To Win Presidential Election

By DEXTER DUGGAN SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Republicans who decline to back GOP nominee Donald Trump for president are engaging in a sort of self-admiring political purity that will “undermine” the ability to defeat leftism in the November elections, a national radio host told a packed ballroom here. Talk host Dennis Prager told an audience of more than 900 people that “feeling good about themselves is dominant on the left,” but the same sort of preening shows up today among Republicans who, Prager asserted, say, “I am a conservative, but I am such a noble conservative, I will undermine” the party ticket this year. Prager was one of the conservative Salem Radio Network’s national talk hosts who spoke at Phoenix outlet…Continue Reading

Why Hyde Matters

September 21, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Why Hyde Matters

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK Ever since the Supreme Court made abortion legal in the early 1970s, I have had to live with a paradox. I deal with it by repeating the bromide about “consistency being the hobgoblin of little minds.” I don’t know it is a logically sound tactic in this instance, but I know of no recourse. The paradox is that, even though I agree that it is not wise to be a “single-issue voter,” I nonetheless view abortion as a deal-breaker: I won’t vote for a “pro-choice” candidate over one who is pro-life, regardless of the other items on the platforms of the candidates. Fortunately, this has never been a real-life dilemma for me. For nearly a half-century…Continue Reading

“Never Trump?”. . . The Case Against “Sitting Out” The Presidential Election

By BRIAN CLOWES Part 3 “If this is a sign of how religious liberty claims will be treated in the years ahead, those who value religious freedom have cause for great concern” — Supreme Court Associate Justice Samuel Alito, on laws specifically targeting Christians being upheld by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. + + + We have seen that eight or even four years of Hillary Clinton in the White House will result in a truly catastrophic headlong rush to the left in our court system. This will result in judges sweeping away all of the gains pro-lifers have been struggling to achieve over nearly half a century, and millions more preborns will die during her tenure. But the…Continue Reading

Let’s “Get Out the Vote” In 2016

September 19, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Let’s “Get Out the Vote” In 2016

By REY FLORES How many of you are registered to vote? How many of your family and friends of voting age are registered to vote? These are important questions, my friends, because whatever is left of our nation is totally at stake here. The reason I ask these questions is that I am currently conducting a series of powerful “Get Out the Vote” training workshops across the country as grassroots outreach coordinator for the fantastic Leadership Institute. These last few months have found me conducting training sessions in California, Florida, New York, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin — just to name a few places. If you aren’t familiar with Leadership Institute, you should be. Since 1979, the institute has prepared conservatives for…Continue Reading

Doctors Or Spin Doctors? . . . Tumbling Hillary, Catholic Officials Both Need Healthier View Of Reality

September 18, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Doctors Or Spin Doctors? . . . Tumbling Hillary, Catholic Officials Both Need Healthier View Of Reality

By DEXTER DUGGAN When Hillary Clinton had her own towering 9-11 collapse at Ground Zero in New York City on September 11, the chills extended far beyond the alleged pneumonia living inside her pantsuit. Implicitly acknowledging that no claims from the Clinton camp can be fully trusted, sweating Democratic Party officials began to worry if they should start thinking of a replacement for their aggressively pro-abortion presidential nominee. After all, if a confession of pneumonia finally was wrung from her upon being cornered, how much worse might her rumored poor health actually be? Even if Hillary feared she’d be looking straight into the tomb before too long, one can imagine this desperately power-hungry, strident woman ordering doctors with their syringes:…Continue Reading

Never Trump?… The Case Against “Sitting Out” The Presidential Election

September 17, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Never Trump?… The Case Against “Sitting Out” The Presidential Election

By BRIAN CLOWES Part 2 (Editor’s Note: Brian Clowes is the director of research and training at Human Life International. To receive an electronic copy of this four-part article with footnotes, e-mail him at bclowes@hli.org.) + + + The consequences of anti-Trump voters sitting out this election go far beyond President Hillary Clinton packing the federal court system with extreme leftists. Conservatives who don’t vote or who write in a hopeless candidate are helping ensure that millions more unborn babies will pay the ultimate price. The Obama administration has backed up the abortion industry at every turn, but President Hillary Clinton will go much further. Pro-abortion leaders universally acknowledge that the three highest priorities of Clinton’s presidency will be abortion,…Continue Reading

Mike Pence And Common Core

September 16, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Mike Pence And Common Core

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK My hunch is that even the most ardent supporters of Donald Trump will admit that Trump never gave a thought to what Common Core is all about before he decided to run for president, and that when he shakes his head and tells us “Common Core is a flop; we have to end Common Core,” he is repeating a line an adviser gave him shortly before his first speech on the topic. We know that if some reporter asked him to give specific examples of what he dislikes about Common Core, he would find a way to change the topic so fast that our eyes would spin. There is nothing wrong with him being in this…Continue Reading

The Catholic Vote And Donald Trump

September 15, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on The Catholic Vote And Donald Trump

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK Even though I spent my graduate school years nodding in agreement with the writers for conservative publications such as National Review, Triumph, and Intercollegiate Review, I went through a year or so when I was intrigued by the writers associated with the Progressive Era of the early 20th century: people such as Eugene Debs, Herbert Croly, Edward Bellamy, and especially Walter Rauschenbusch. It is not that I thought about becoming a liberal. No chance. But I found the Progressives’ thesis persuasive. The Progressive theorists’ premise was that the rise of corporate power required a broad-based campaign for a large and active central government to serve as an advocate for the ordinary American in the formation of…Continue Reading
