Not Just Dems, Media… Conservatives Keep Having To Fight GOP Elements

September 12, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Not Just Dems, Media… Conservatives Keep Having To Fight GOP Elements

By DEXTER DUGGAN Probably not since the surprising Tea Party sprang onto the scene in 2009 has there been such an unexpected arrival of political potency, a man who in fact may suit Tea Partiers to a T — as in Trump. And both the exasperated citizen-rebels who had had it with swollen government and today’s headstrong Donald Trump were greeted the same way by many of the prevailing powers. Not welcomed with eagerness that more voters were becoming involved in democracy, but with disgust that someone dared act outside mandated expectations. The Democratic Party and the dominant media pretty soon sized up the Tea Partiers as a danger — which the citizen-rebels proceeded to verify by overwhelmingly returning the…Continue Reading

Restoring The Sacred… On Bended Knee Within The Holy Of Holies

September 11, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Restoring The Sacred… On Bended Knee Within The Holy Of Holies

By JAMES MONTI In his magnificent July 5 presentation to the 2016 Sacra Liturgia UK Conference in London, His Eminence Robert Cardinal Sarah not only raised the important issue of celebrating the Ordinary Form of the Mass ad orientem, as has been widely reported, but also urged a renewed fidelity to the prescribed practice of kneeling for the consecration and the restoration of the custom of kneeling for Holy Communion (complete text posted online by the UK Catholic Herald, Tuesday, July 12, 2016). In this context the cardinal quoted his own summation of why kneeling is essential to Catholic worship as given in his 2002 book, On the Road to Nineve (Paulines Publications Africa, 2012, p. 199): “Man is not…Continue Reading

The Virgin And The Dynamo And Notre Dame’s Campus Crossroads Project

September 10, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on The Virgin And The Dynamo And Notre Dame’s Campus Crossroads Project

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK Unless they have some connection to the University of Notre Dame, it is unlikely that readers of this column will have heard of the school’s proposed Campus Crossroads Project. The project is still in its fundraising stage. One of our readers, J.L. of Indiana, writes to offer some observations about the project’s implications for the university’s future and Catholic higher education in general. But let’s look at the project itself, before considering J.L.’s thoughts on the matter. What Notre Dame is proposing is a $400 million undertaking to be completed by August 2017. The money will be raised through a combination of fundraising commitments, the sale of new premium club seats for Fighting Irish football games…Continue Reading

Divine Mercy’s Abundance… Offered To Retreatants At Reverent Mission In Texas’ Hill Country

September 9, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Divine Mercy’s Abundance… Offered To Retreatants At Reverent Mission In Texas’ Hill Country

By DEXTER DUGGAN NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — At six-foot-five, Fr. John Mary Foster, MDM, may be able to reach a little higher toward the heavens than most other people, but retreatants at a rural facility here dedicated to the Divine Mercy are told that faith, trust, and humility bring knowledge of God’s will within their grasp. Foster is the leader, or “guardian,” of this monastic community, the Mission of Divine Mercy, which also reaches out to the world. The small religious order, founded in 2001, also is known as Mission of Divine Mercy, hence MDM. The retreats are called Encounter With Jesus, or EWJ. In a peaceful setting in Texas’ wooded Hill Country, the mission began offering three-night retreats to…Continue Reading

Killing Crackers

September 8, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Killing Crackers

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK For as long as I can remember, liberals in the academy and the media have been making the case that the use of the n-word is to be deplored because it dehumanizes African-Americans, leading to everything from lynching to discrimination in employment and housing and racial stereotypes in the popular culture. We have also been lectured about how the derogatory terms used for our enemies during wars — krauts, nips, and towel-heads, for example — can cause members of our military to commit atrocities against them. These terms can result, we are told, in our military seeing our opponents as less than fully human, promoting illegal acts of cruelty and torture from individuals who would never…Continue Reading

McCain Wins Primary, But . . . Trump Shows Who’ll Be In Charge Over Border During Phoenix Rouser

September 7, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on McCain Wins Primary, But . . . Trump Shows Who’ll Be In Charge Over Border During Phoenix Rouser

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — The days of open-borders John McCain are over, if Donald Trump has anything to say about that. The Arizonan had Trump’s endorsement to win successful renomination as the Republican candidate for a U.S. Senate seat in the Grand Canyon State’s August 30 primary election. However, when Trump delivered his carefully awaited immigration policy speech here the very next day, it was plain that the prospect of cozy “amnesty” deals, such as dreamed of by McCain and former GOP President George W. Bush, should be dead on arrival at a Trump White House. It’s as if Trump was telling McCain: OK, John, I endorsed you for the Senate after you endorsed me for the White House,…Continue Reading

Never Trump?. . . The Case Against “Sitting Out” The Presidential Election

September 6, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Never Trump?. . . The Case Against “Sitting Out” The Presidential Election

By BRIAN CLOWES Part 1 (Editor’s Note: This is the first in a four-part series by Brian Clowes, director of research and training at Human Life International, on why “sitting out” this presidential election could lead to disaster. ) + + + “I will not take your life, but the life I leave you with is worse than death” — Alexis de Tocqueville. + + + For the past six months, Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump (and Bernie Sanders, too) have dominated every media outlet every single day. This makes me earnestly wonder why a nation of 325 million people can’t do better than a totally corrupt, compulsive liar, a delusional, broken-down Socialist, and a narcissistic billionaire who can’t keep his…Continue Reading

Does Anti-Christianity Lead To Increased Military Suicides?

September 5, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Does Anti-Christianity Lead To Increased Military Suicides?

By REY FLORES Just this past week, a 76-year-old veteran was reportedly unable to see an emergency room physician at a Veterans Administration (VA) Hospital on Long Island, New York, as he sought help for psychological problems he was experiencing. He proceeded to return to his car, pulled out a gun and killed himself. A hospital worker told The New York Times that someone “dropped the ball,” questioning why the veteran was not referred to the hospital’s mental health center. Sounds like they did drop the ball, all right, and the ball continues to drop over and over again for our military veterans. MilitaryTimes.com reported as follows on July 7, 2016: “Roughly 20 veterans a day commit suicide nationwide,…Continue Reading

Minor Candidates Siphon Vote . . . McCain’s Juggernaut Gets An Assist In Defeating Pro-Life Ward

September 4, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Minor Candidates Siphon Vote . . . McCain’s Juggernaut Gets An Assist In Defeating Pro-Life Ward

By DEXTER DUGGAN SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The forest of yard signs for incumbent John McCain’s Senate re-nomination by the driveway of a Phoenix polling place helped illustrate the overall clout he carried into the Arizona primary election. The state’s political establishment was doing all it could to weight the scales in his favor. Almost lost among his signs was one yard sign for McCain’s main GOP opponent, Kelli Ward. A significant factor in McCain’s August 30 primary victory were two minor GOP challengers also on the ballot who split the vote and stole some of Ward’s momentum, a local Republican activist told The Wanderer. As of the morning after the vote, unofficial election returns from the Arizona Secretary of State’s…Continue Reading

The Black Legend

September 3, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on The Black Legend

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK J.M., a reader from Florissant, Mo., writes to stress the need for Catholic educators to give their students perspective on the distortion of Catholic Spain’s history, what has been called the “Black Legend.” Recent examples are the campaign to vilify the life of Fr. Junipero Serra and the impact of the Spanish missions in California. One cheap shot after another. The historian Philip Wayne Powell in his 1985 book The Tree of Hate describes the Black Legend as “an image of Spain circulated through late sixteenth-century Europe, borne by means of political and religious propaganda that blackened the characters of Spaniards to such an extent that Spain became the symbol of all forces of repression, brutality,…Continue Reading
