Minor Candidates Siphon Vote . . . McCain’s Juggernaut Gets An Assist In Defeating Pro-Life Ward

By DEXTER DUGGAN SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The forest of yard signs for incumbent John McCain’s Senate re-nomination by the driveway of a Phoenix polling place helped illustrate the overall clout he carried into the Arizona primary election. The state’s political establishment was doing all it could to weight the scales in his favor. Almost lost among his signs was one yard sign for McCain’s main GOP opponent, Kelli Ward. A significant factor in McCain’s August 30 primary victory were two minor GOP challengers also on the ballot who split the vote and stole some of Ward’s momentum, a local Republican activist told The Wanderer. As of the morning after the vote, unofficial election returns from the Arizona Secretary of State’s…Continue Reading

The Black Legend

September 3, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on The Black Legend

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK J.M., a reader from Florissant, Mo., writes to stress the need for Catholic educators to give their students perspective on the distortion of Catholic Spain’s history, what has been called the “Black Legend.” Recent examples are the campaign to vilify the life of Fr. Junipero Serra and the impact of the Spanish missions in California. One cheap shot after another. The historian Philip Wayne Powell in his 1985 book The Tree of Hate describes the Black Legend as “an image of Spain circulated through late sixteenth-century Europe, borne by means of political and religious propaganda that blackened the characters of Spaniards to such an extent that Spain became the symbol of all forces of repression, brutality,…Continue Reading

The First Step Needed… To Get The Church Out Of The Current Crisis

September 2, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on The First Step Needed… To Get The Church Out Of The Current Crisis

(Editor’s Note: The editors of LifeSiteNews.com posted this editorial on their website on August 19. All rights reserved.) + + + In his book Magisterial Authority, Fr. Chad Ripperger, Ph.D., says that “the Church will not climb out of this tumultuous period” without reversing the “practice since the Second Vatican Council onward not to police the doctrinal integrity” among bishops, priests, and theologians. The crucial observation comes at the end of nearly 50 years of destructive leniency, which has in the Francis pontificate taken on new dimensions. While under the pontificates of Pope St. John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI dissident bishops were indeed appointed, there was still the understanding that they had to keep their heads down. Should…Continue Reading

Lifeboat Coffee . . . Perks Pro-Lifers Up To Save Babies

September 1, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Lifeboat Coffee . . . Perks Pro-Lifers Up To Save Babies

By REY FLORES In life, there are certain people we meet who make a big first impression on us. With me, one of those people is John Lillis, founder and president of Lifeboat Coffee. I met The Skipper, as he is known to his friends, at the 2012 March for Life conference where he had a display of his new brainchild. I was across the room with American Life League’s display, so The Skipper introduced himself to me. At one point, I asked him why he was at the conference and he walked me to his display and said this, “The Skipper loves coffee as much as he loves babies, so why not sell the best coffee and help support…Continue Reading

Voting For Hillary

August 31, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Voting For Hillary

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK Am I the one who is thinking about voting for Hillary? Not a chance. I have made my peace with voting for Donald Trump, warts and all. I don’t have much hope that he “will make America great again,” but he is the only chance we have to keep the Clintons from making it far worse than it already is. I am not going to resort to the cliché about this being “the most important election of our lifetimes.” They say that about every election that I can recall. But it is an important election. Not only are the Clintons leftist ideologues; they are devious and dishonest leftist ideologues. My interest just now is with Catholics…Continue Reading

Democrat Abortion Elite . . . Tire Of Concealing Extremism, Decide To Shove It Into Open

By DEXTER DUGGAN Carolyn Gerster, MD, would tell of the time she visited the old Soviet Union and noticed a building that always was busy. What’s going on in there? That’s an abortion clinic, she was told. A what? A place where only abortions are performed, the young American physician was informed. Gerster was stunned at the idea of a facility whose only purpose was ending the lives of babies. This was before the permissive abortion movement began to rear its head in the United States in the 1960s. The Godless, Communist Soviet Union, no respecter of human life, wanted abortion easily available to the women under its boot. Having driven them into lives lacking hope and faith, the Communist…Continue Reading

Petition Pope Against Sex-Ed Program

August 29, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Petition Pope Against Sex-Ed Program

By REY FLORES A few years back the American Life League released a fantastic video called Hooking Kids on Sex, which garnered hundreds of thousands of views. It was a video that exposed all of the vile ways in which Planned Parenthood and others introduce children and young people to all types of disordered sexual perversions. The goal, of course, is to brainwash kids into thinking that these behaviors were “perfectly normal.” Much of what Planned Parenthood teaches is based on the 1994 book It’s Perfectly Normal: Changing Bodies, Growing Up, Sex, and Sexual Health by Robie Harris and illustrated by Michael Emberley. Page upon page of the book shows graphic illustrations of genitalia and more. Nothing is left to…Continue Reading

But Arpaio Slugged By Judge . . . Trump Looks For Support In Different Places, Gives McCain A Hand

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — From warning about elections being rigged to calling attention to how Republican candidates often passively have ceded black voters to the Democratic Party, GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump has put pressing topics on the table that need answers but normally seem to be ignored. Maybe that’s how he got as far as he has with voters who felt voiceless in this year’s White House race. Election deception is as old as sin, and as recently confirmed when leaked emails demonstrated that the Democratic National Committee was tilted unfairly against Bernie Sanders’ presidential-primary race with Hillary Clinton. National Democratic officials resigned in embarrassment — but Hillary still grabbed her party’s nomination. With the general-election race now…Continue Reading

The Need For Apologetics

August 26, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on The Need For Apologetics

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK First Teachers has received many letters in recent weeks regarding the secularization taking place at modern Catholic colleges. Some of the correspondents point to the honorary degrees given to pro-abortion politicians, others to performances of the play The Vagina Monologues, others to the official status given to LGBTQ student groups and activities, others to the large numbers of graduates of these schools who no longer practice the faith. J.R.B., Ph.D., points to something else: the absence of courses in apologetics at these colleges. He writes, “I’m accepting your invitation to comment on why so many of our Catholic colleges are and have been ineffective in cementing religious loyalty to the faith in their graduates. “In my…Continue Reading
