A Marian Study Center . . . Couple Hopes To Find Others Interested In Starting St. Kolbe Project

By DEXTER DUGGAN SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Books have been a steppingstone through life for scholarly Remi Ruiz, who has collected them for decades. He met his future wife, Alma, at a bookstore. Today, if he wanted, he could pave the floors beneath their feet at home with books, if that wasn’t being disrespectful of the printed word. Welcoming a visitor to their bookcase-lined living room that looks more like a library in this Phoenix suburb, the Ruizes speak of their dream to put their thousands of volumes into service at a hoped-for center for the Blessed Mother as St. Maximilian Mary Kolbe revered her, the Immaculata, the Mother of the Savior who would lead others to Christ. “One of our…Continue Reading

Ignoring The Obvious

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK There must be some old figure of speech — or maybe an Aesop’s fable — that expresses the idea that certain truths go unrecognized because people fear that mentioning them will result in retaliation from powerful forces in society. But I can’t think of it at the moment. The Hans Christian Andersen story about the emperor’s new clothes comes close, but does not cover all the bases, such as what happened recently at Baylor University. Baylor is a school affiliated with the Southern Baptist Church, with an openly stated commitment to Christian beliefs. It is also a football powerhouse. Nothing inherently incompatible about that. Catholics like to think that the University of Notre Dame can be…Continue Reading

Is The Party Over For Bushism?

July 26, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Is The Party Over For Bushism?

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN Neither George W. Bush, the Republican Party nominee in 2000 and 2004, nor Jeb, the dethroned Prince of Wales, went to Cleveland. Nor did John McCain or Mitt Romney, the last two nominees. These former leaders would like it thought that high principle keeps them away from a GOP convention that would nominate Donald Trump. Petulance, however, must surely play a part. Bush Republicans feel unappreciated, and understandably so. For Trump’s nomination represents not only a rejection of their legacy but a repudiation of much of post-Cold War party dogma. America crossed a historic divide and entered a new era. Even should Trump lose, there is likely no going back. Trump has attacked NAFTA, MFN for…Continue Reading

Powerful Vox Vitae Pro-Life Camp To Launch in L.A.

By REY FLORES If anyone has followed my columns throughout the years, you’ll know that I am both pro-life and Hispanic. It burns me up to see how many people in the Hispanic communities throughout our nation fall for the lies of Planned Parenthood and the abortion and contraception industries altogether. Being that Hispanics are the fastest-growing minority in these United States, the evil geniuses at Planned Parenthood have their eyes set on these communities. Cecile Richards and the rest of Planned Parenthood have dollar signs in their eyes when they look at young Hispanic people. Along with the lies that the regressive left-wing Democratic Party extremists continue to use to pander to Hispanics, Planned Parenthood has ramped up efforts…Continue Reading

Hate Speech Laws

July 24, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Hate Speech Laws

By JUDE P. DOUGHERTY The Cato Institute in its Policy Analysis bulletin of May 24 has published a timely article by Robert Corn Revere on “Hate Speech Laws.” Revere is a Washington-based lawyer who practices First Amendment and media law. Whether intentional or not, racial tension is promoted daily by big media as they give coverage to what otherwise might be construed as minor events in Baton Rouge or St. Paul. Protests in one part of the country or another against police brutality (never alleged police brutality) are treated as national events and in major newspapers, they are given front-page treatment under headlines such as “officers ought to be held accountable.” In the context of discussions of hate speech, the…Continue Reading

Surrendering To The Welfare State

July 23, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Surrendering To The Welfare State

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK I go out of my way to read Thomas Sowell’s columns. He has the unique ability to be both informative and entertaining. A recent column, found in the online edition of National Review, entitled “Conservatives Shouldn’t Treat the Welfare State as Inevitable,” was no exception. Sowell points out the dangers of accepting the welfare state as part of our societal life, of trying to come up with a “better approach” to distributing welfare payments, a way of “managing the costs.” He begins by pointing out the debilitating effects of the welfare state upon both the taxpayers who finance it and the “clients” who rely upon it. He contends it makes no sense for conservatives to seek…Continue Reading

After Buccaneer Obama . . . GOP Convention Hopes To Show The Skill To Steer U.S.

By DEXTER DUGGAN The newscaster came on the screen abruptly. “We interrupt our regular programming this morning because of shocking news from the Republican National Convention. “The party’s presidential nominee was to have delivered his acceptance speech to the delegates this evening. But a leak from his speech text caused such immediate and widespread outrage that he has renounced being nominated. There is no longer a nominee. The convention is in chaos. “It was learned that the candidate planned to say in his speech that if his Democratic opponent is elected president this November, the federal government will require that naked men be allowed into women’s and girls’ public locker and bath rooms because of nondiscrimination policies. “That accusation by…Continue Reading

Business Sense

July 21, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Business Sense

By JUDE P. DOUGHERTY For an honest account of what the future portends, one may be advised to look to business leaders rather than to politicians, economists, or academicians. The business world seems to know where the country is headed and is acting accordingly. We read daily of hundreds of employees being let go at once-flourishing manufacturing or retail establishments. Union leadership has been unable to prevent large-scale reductions in government employees at all levels. “Scaled down for modern living” has become a real estate slogan. Seemingly upscale has become the province of an elite class. It wasn’t all that noticeable in times past when middle-class accommodations were available to those who knew there was a first class, something they…Continue Reading

The Jesuit Trajectory

July 20, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on The Jesuit Trajectory

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK There has been an ongoing discussion in recent editions of First Teachers about what one of our correspondents called the “Jesuit trajectory” toward secular liberalism at their universities. He meant by that everything from the awarding of honorary degrees to pro-abortion politicians, to regular performances of The Vagina Monologues, to explicit cooperation with the agenda of LGBTQ activists, to course offerings with a strong modernist bent. In line with this theme is a letter First Teachers recently received from a husband and wife who are graduates of Fordham University in the 1960s. They were contemplating a sizable donation to the school, but were concerned about stories they had read in the press about the school’s chairman…Continue Reading

Holiness And Hypocrisy

July 19, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Holiness And Hypocrisy

By ALICE von HILDEBRAND Even though I have never met you personally, nevertheless I feel I know you and I care for you. Having spent most of my life teaching people of your age, I have learned a lot about them: their desires, their hopes, their longings, their disillusions, their bitterness, their insecurity, their suffering. This is why I know that deep down, you — my anonymous young friend — long for what is noble, great, and beautiful. The French poet, Paul Claudel, wrote: “Youth is not the time for eroticism; it is the time for heroism.” This craving for what is heroic is a characteristic of youth, and one that remains fully alive in those who conquer “eternal youth.”…Continue Reading
