Guns N’ Catholics

June 28, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Guns N’ Catholics

By REY FLORES Do you own a firearm? Wait. Don’t answer out loud — you never know who may be listening. If your answer is yes: Why do you own a firearm? Is it for hunting, self-defense, or is it for nefarious purposes? You see, there are all sorts of different reasons why an individual may own a firearm. In the current debate in our nation’s capital about guns and so-called gun control, there are those who claim they want to reduce what they call “gun violence,” when in reality they seek to violate the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and disarm our citizenry. As Catholics, we need to ask: What does the Church say about guns or any…Continue Reading

Phoenix Starting Point Recalled . . . Time For Trump To Use More Surgical Sharpness, Less Shrapnel?

June 27, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Phoenix Starting Point Recalled . . . Time For Trump To Use More Surgical Sharpness, Less Shrapnel?

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — Arizona State Treasurer Jeff DeWit, a Republican who knows his numbers, went down a list of chilling statistics on a hot day here in front of a fired-up crowd waiting to hear presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump. It was nearly a year since a successful Trump rally in Phoenix last July persuaded the Manhattan billionaire that he really might have a potent presidential campaign within his grasp. He may have thought he needed to bellow then to get attention. However, treasurer DeWit’s devastating surgical presentation on Barack Obama’s damaging custody of America suggests that more such GOP precision, and less Trump bluster, is the right prescription today, when the billionaire is criticized for using…Continue Reading

Will Hillary Be Indicted?

June 26, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Will Hillary Be Indicted?

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK Will Hillary Clinton beat the rap over her private email server? “Beat the rap” is the appropriate term. I would wager serious money that even the most ardent of Hillary’s supporters would admit — if given a dose of truth serum — that they know her private server was set up to conceal from the public the nature of her involvement with the Clinton Global Initiative. There is no other plausible explanation for all the effort that went in to setting up the server and the contrived explanations from Hillary and her team for the 30,000 deleted emails. If you listen to Fox News, you will be confident that an indictment is on the way. Andrew…Continue Reading

Justice Scalia And The Natural Law Tradition

June 25, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Justice Scalia And The Natural Law Tradition

By JUDE DOUGHERTY In this election season, we can appreciate all the more the role that Justice Antonin Scalia played during his 30 years of service on the United States Supreme Court. There are many facets to the campaigns waged among the contenders for the presidency of the country, but none are more significant than presidential appointments to the Supreme Court. In the fifth century B.C., Heraclitus of Ephesus wrote, “The people must fight for their laws as for their walls.” After two and a half millennia that dictum remains relevant. The rule of law is often at stake in appointments to the nation’s highest court. When it comes to interpretation of the U.S. Constitution, Justice Scalia is associated with…Continue Reading

Still More Confusion From Pope Francis

June 24, 2016 Frontpage 2 Comments

The Wanderer in its issue dated June 16 published an article by John-Henry Westen of LifeSiteNews entitled, “Confusing Even the Devout…The Troubling Statements of Pope Francis.” Just that fast, Catholics were once again faced with a series of pontifical ramblings that seemingly assaulted the unchanging and inviolable teachings of Jesus Christ on marriage and chastity. We cite once more a LifeSiteNews report from John-Henry Westen, dated June 17: “Pope Francis spoke yesterday at a pastoral congress on the family for the Diocese of Rome, and his remarks are causing consternation among faithful Catholics. In off-the-cuff remarks, the Pope made the dual claim that the ‘great majority’ of Catholic marriages are ‘null’ — in other words, not actual marriages — and…Continue Reading

Were The Good Old Days All That Good?

June 23, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Were The Good Old Days All That Good?

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK I don’t want anyone to misunderstand what will follow in this column. I am fully on the side of those who want to preserve a strong Catholic identity in the curriculum and campus life at Catholic colleges. Whenever I hear an administrator at a Catholic college talk about the need to “move beyond the seminary model” of Catholic colleges in the past, my hackles go up. I know the administrator is going to push for policies that will take Catholic colleges down the same path that led to the full secularization of the Ivy League schools, which once were affiliated with Protestant denominations. That said, a letter to the editor in the Jesuits’ America magazine a…Continue Reading

Does Pope Francis Dislike Americans?

June 22, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Does Pope Francis Dislike Americans?

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK At first, I was taken aback when I read John L. Allen’s May 23 column about Pope Francis on the website Crux (cruxnow.com). The title of the column was “Let’s face it: Americans just aren’t this Pope’s favorites.” Upon reflection, I would say that Allen is on to something. (In addition to serving as editor of Crux, Allen also writes a column on Catholic issues for The Boston Globe.) I’ll let Allen speak for himself: “By now, it’s clear that one defining feature both of Francis’ personality and his approach to governance — which shouldn’t be all that surprising when you think about it — is a distinct ambivalence about the United States and Americans. When…Continue Reading

Cardinal Mueller . . . Rejects Image Of Doctrinal “Throwing Stones”

June 21, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Cardinal Mueller . . . Rejects Image Of Doctrinal “Throwing Stones”

By MAIKE HICKSON (Editor’s Note: The article below concerns Gerhard Cardinal Mueller’s take on the “throwing stones” image used by Pope Francis. OnePeterFive.com, which published this piece on June 14, graciously granted The Wanderer reprint permission.) + + + Just a few days ago, OnePeterFive was able to highlight an important allusive statement made by Gerhard Cardinal Mueller, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), about Archbishop Victor Manuel Fernandez, whose undifferentiated idea that the Pope need not necessarily reside in Rome in order to govern the Catholic Church was labeled by the CDF prefect as “heretical.” There is yet more to come. Mueller’s June 2016 interview with the German Catholic journal, Herder Korrespondenz, contains even…Continue Reading

While Identity Politics Suffers . . . Praying For Repose Of Orlando Souls And A Moral Awakening

June 20, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on While Identity Politics Suffers . . . Praying For Repose Of Orlando Souls And A Moral Awakening

By DEXTER DUGGAN Start with the logical explanation. If your car’s not in the garage, your first thought is that your teenaged son took it, not an interstellar spacecraft’s explorers. That’s the way the mind tends to work. If an unlikely interruption occurs at an entertainment venue, the first thought probably is: just part of the show. That’s what audience members thought at Paris’ Bataclan theater last November when Islamist terrorists burst in. But they brought bullets, not ballads. That’s also what at least some revelers thought early on June 12 when an Islamist gunman began firing in Orlando’s Pulse club, popular with an LGBT audience. When people were wondering what’s the next moment’s music, the reality was the sudden…Continue Reading

Brotherhood Without Fatherhood

June 19, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Brotherhood Without Fatherhood

By DONALD DeMARCO Pope St. John Paul II made a claim in his international best-selling book, Crossing the Threshold of Hope, that may be startling to many, namely, that original sin, is, above all, an attempt “to abolish fatherhood.” Upon reflection, this statement makes a great deal of sense. After all, Adam and Eve chose to reject God and side with the serpent. This initial act of disobedience, or original sin, has cast a shadow that has covered all of human history. For the late Holy Father, the notion that God is not a loving Father, but is a tyrant or oppressor, has led to a rebellion against Him as a slave would rebel against the master who kept him…Continue Reading
