Hillary And The Big Lie On Abortion

January 30, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Hillary And The Big Lie On Abortion

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK The term “the big lie technique” is most often associated with Adolf Hitler and his henchman Josef Goebbels. The theory is that a preposterous lie will eventually be accepted by the masses if it is repeated confidently and emphatically. In Hitler’s words in Mein Kampf, “Because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily, in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters, but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to…Continue Reading

Rebooting The Pro-Life Movement

By REY FLORES It was the blizzard of 2016 which almost derailed the national March for Life in our nation’s capital a couple of weeks ago, but thanks to some hearty pro-life souls, the March proceeded as planned, albeit a little smaller than expected. Some made the great escape out of D.C. before the snow started falling in the late afternoon, but many of these same folks also got stranded across eastern highways. One group even celebrated Mass on the Pennsylvania Turnpike on an altar made of snow and ice. (See Donald DeMarco’s editorial “Fire From Ice” on p. 4A of this week’s issue.) Either way, the blizzard was symbolic of where the pro-life movement stands today. It is paralyzed…Continue Reading

Blizzard Doesn’t Obscure Student Focus On Planned Parenthood

January 28, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Blizzard Doesn’t Obscure Student Focus On Planned Parenthood

By DEXTER DUGGAN SAN FRANCISCO — Modern media capabilities allow pro-lifers to get their messages straight out to the public, jumping past the restrictions of dominant pro-abortion writers and editors. Such capabilities also helped Students for Life of America (studentsforlife.org) reach young people even though the east coast’s dominant blizzard shut down SFLA’s annual major conference scheduled to complement the March for Life in Washington, D.C. Although about 2,000 registrants couldn’t attend the planned January 23 east coast conference, “many of them tuned in to the livestream” of SFLA’s west coast conference here the following day, January 24, the organization’s director of communications, Kristina Hernandez, told The Wanderer. Predictably, Planned Parenthood’s ravaging the nation came in for conference attention. “We…Continue Reading

Portrait Of St. Paul

January 27, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Portrait Of St. Paul

By PHILIP TROWER I To paint a completely faithful word portrait of St. Paul would require the gifts of a literary Titian or Rembrandt. I can therefore only give you a pencil sketch. But I have called it a portrait so as to match the “Portrait of St. Peter” which The Wanderer published some months ago. Because history and divine Providence have linked the two princes of the apostles so closely, I can’t help feeling that any representations of them ought to be in the form of a diptych. I first began to appreciate the greatness and gifts of St. Paul and the unique nature of his vocation in a way I never had before about two years ago when…Continue Reading

Donald Trump: Why Won’t His Supporters Listen to Reason?

January 26, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Donald Trump: Why Won’t His Supporters Listen to Reason?

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK I miss The Wanderer columns by the late Joseph Sobran for many reasons. They were always informative and enlightening. And often surprising. Sobran was a classic example of someone who could think outside the box. He did not march in lockstep with the leadership of the Republican Party and the gurus of the conservative movement. His feud with William F. Buckley on U.S. policy toward Israel is just one example. What do I think Sobran’s position on Donald Trump would be? I don’t know, of course. But I am intrigued by the thought of whether he would go along with George Will, National Review’s Jonah Goldberg, Rich Lowry, and Fox News commentator Charles Krauthammer, who are…Continue Reading

Suing CMP, Backing Hillary . . . Planned Parenthood Bites Off More Than It Can Macerate

January 25, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Suing CMP, Backing Hillary . . . Planned Parenthood Bites Off More Than It Can Macerate

By DEXTER DUGGAN Don’t expect to find too much delicacy at Planned Parenthood, not in the way it crushes and rips millions of babies, and not in the way it blunders around with millions of dollars for overt advocacy. After PP recently made its first-ever endorsement of a candidate during presidential-primary season, while the party nomination is still up for grabs, the abortion giant and “choice” champion was attacked by its own supporters for choosing Hillary Clinton. Even though Clinton is a PP-loving Democrat and pro-abortion extremist, some of the organization’s backers thought it had gone way out of line. The pro-life Live Action News site (liveactionnews.org) posted on January 11 that PP was “flooded with comments from outraged supporters”…Continue Reading

The Ascent Of John Boyle O’Reilly . . . From Irish Rebel To Aussie Convict To U.S. Catholic Media Star

January 24, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on The Ascent Of John Boyle O’Reilly . . . From Irish Rebel To Aussie Convict To U.S. Catholic Media Star

By RAY CAVANAUGH Fugitives are among the most desperate of demographics. Fortunately, they have a patron saint, in Brigit of Kildare, whose feast day is on February 1. Not all fugitives seek to commit crimes, though. In fact, some proceed to do inspiring things. And one fugitive in particular, John Boyle O’Reilly, eventually became a Catholic media mogul. Born in County Meath, Ireland, in 1844, he entered life amidst the Great Famine. O’Reilly, though, had a less famished time than much of his ethnic brethren. He took to book-learning as a child, and at age 13 was apprenticed to a local newspaper. As a young man, he joined the British Army. He then joined the rebel Irish Republican Brotherhood. With…Continue Reading

Reflecting Nation’s Unrest . . . Precinct Workers Tell McCain It’s Time To Quit

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — There’s no earthly chasm disrupting tree-lined Central Avenue here as it placidly heads north of Bethany Home Road, past well-off residences. However, there might as well have been an abyss between U.S. Sen. John McCain’s former home on Central and the church auditorium not far away where local Republican precinct committeemen convened for their annual assembly. McCain left that neighborhood once his children were grown, and the regular January meeting of Maricopa County GOP precinct ground troops, resounding with denunciations of their own party’s dispiriting record, in effect voted overwhelmingly that McCain should leave the Senate, too, although he’s currently running for his sixth term there. The January 16 vote on the “Anyone But McCain”…Continue Reading

Conscience, The Infallible Guide To Holiness Of Life

By RAYMOND LEO CARDINAL BURKE (Editor’s Note: Following is an excerpt from March 7, 2015 address that Cardinal Burke gave at the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children Youth Conference, Southport, England. Some citations in the original quoted the German spoken by Pope Benedict XVI in his September 2011 address to the German Parliament. These have been omitted here for reasons of space.) + + + If we are to seek holiness of life, to live more totally and faithfully for Christ, namely, to give our lives to Christ, without any reserve, our hearts must seek their wisdom and strength in the glorious pierced Heart of Jesus; our conscience must be trained to listen to God’s voice alone and…Continue Reading

Is Iran Taking The China Road?

January 21, 2016 Frontpage Comments Off on Is Iran Taking The China Road?

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN Is the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of the Islamic Republic, a RINO — a revolutionary in name only? So they must be muttering around the barracks of the Iranian Republican Guard Corps today. For while American hawks are saying we gave away the store to Tehran, consider what ayatollah agreed to. He gave his blessing to the return of 10 U.S. sailors who intruded into Iranian waters within hours of capture. He turned loose four Americans convicted of spying. And he gave final approval to a nuclear deal that is a national humiliation. Ordered by the U.S. and Security Council to prove Iran was not lying when it said it had no nuclear weapons…Continue Reading
