Christmas And Motherhood

December 21, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Christmas And Motherhood

By GEORGE A. KENDALL A few weeks ago, I lost my mother. She was almost 100 years old, had lived not only a long but a very full and good life, and, is, I am confident, with God now, so, from a strictly rational perspective, there would seem to be little reason to mourn. But as we all know, it doesn’t work that way. A mother’s role in giving us life, both natural and supernatural, is a huge reality, and the end of that role, at least in its earthly form, is a huge event, one that takes a long time to really assimilate. And we miss her very deeply. And so, for this year’s Christmas article, I am going…Continue Reading

Inmates And The Asylum

December 20, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Inmates And The Asylum

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK There have been some indications of late — in spite of all the student protests and expressions of political correctness — that the inmates are not yet in complete charge of the asylum on our college campuses. An article in The Daily Signal (dailysignal.com) on November 21 by Kelsey Harkness gives an example of a professor who did not bend to the left-wing campus protesters — and who survived. There is a lesson to be learned by other faculty members and administrators who hold back from criticizing the protesters in fear of the consequences. Harkness tells of Carol Swain, a black conservative professor at Vanderbilt University who responded to student protests demanding her resignation with a…Continue Reading

The Making Of The Modern Santa Claus

December 19, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on The Making Of The Modern Santa Claus

By RAY CAVANAUGH Long before the beloved icon of Santa Claus there was St. Nicholas, a fourth-century bishop in modern-day Turkey. Known for his generosity to the less fortunate, the original St. Nicholas reportedly tossed bags of gold through an open window and into the residence of a family too poor to provide dowries for their three daughters, who — thanks to St. Nick’s surreptitious charity — were saved from a likely fate of prostitution. The memory of St. Nicholas endured, and he became the patron saint of many things, including the nations of Greece and Russia. Even as far back as the Middle Ages, gifts were given in memory of Nicholas — typically on his feast day of December…Continue Reading

Upstart Virginia Strategists . . . Think John McCain Will Lose Arizona Primary Election

December 18, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Upstart Virginia Strategists . . . Think John McCain Will Lose Arizona Primary Election

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — Two whiz kids who managed the remarkable primary-election campaign that toppled powerful U.S. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R., Va.) in 2014 told The Wanderer they think Sen. John McCain will lose the Arizona GOP primary in 2016 as he seeks to retain his national seat for a sixth six-year term. Upstart strategist Gray Delany tied McCain’s fate to swelling national disgust with the “one-party” political system and out-of-touch officeholders that also defeated Cantor. Delany was 24 years of age when he served as deputy campaign manager for Virginia economics professor Dave Brat, who, Delany said, decided to challenge Cantor for Virginia’s Seventh Congressional District seat out of disgust with the party machine system. Brat’s…Continue Reading

A Baby On The Mind . . . Emperor Obamus Paces The Palace Floor

December 17, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on A Baby On The Mind . . . Emperor Obamus Paces The Palace Floor

By DEXTER DUGGAN The year of our Lord? It seemed the Messiah had manifested Himself, but we are left without a trace of Him under Emperor Barbaricus Obamus. Was He ever here at all? The emperor told the wise men from the East that he wanted to see the newborn baby. Did they point him toward Bethlehem? At this time of year the dark is long and very deep. Silent nights over the olive trees beyond Jerusalem’s walls. But there’s pacing in the palace and oil lamps alight so the emperor doesn’t stumble over cracks he caused in his foundation. Again. It won’t go away. Emperor Obamus suffers another sleepless night. Why is it so hard to rest when he…Continue Reading

Will Elites Blow Up The GOP?

December 16, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Will Elites Blow Up The GOP?

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN “Buchanan, if you ever hear of a group getting together to stop X, be sure to put your money on X.” So, Richard Nixon told me half a century ago, after he had been badly burned in just such a futile and failed enterprise. It was the Cleveland Governors Conference of 1964. Sen. Barry Goldwater had just defeated Gov. Nelson Rockefeller in the final and decisive winner-take-all primary in California. As the story is told, Stu Spencer, Rocky’s man in California, had come to his candidate and said, “Governor, I think it’s time to call in the Eastern establishment.” To which Rocky replied, “You’re looking at it, buddy. I’m all that’s left!” Rocky was cooked. But…Continue Reading

What Is Holiness?

December 15, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on What Is Holiness?

By DONALD DeMARCO Holiness may be easier to recognize in a person than it is to define in words. One recalls how the multitudes recognized the holiness of John Paul II and exclaimed in one voice, “Santo subito” (sainthood now). Nonetheless, it is possible through the medium of writing, rather than through the medium of a holy person, to shed some light on this most exalted and important quality. We begin by looking to language. Holiness, as its etymology in almost every European language indicates, is a special form of wholeness. The words “heal,” “health,” “whole,” and “holy” are all etymologically related. A person may be healed and regain his health, which is his physical wholeness. But holiness is a…Continue Reading

Black Activist… Warns Against Damage Caused By Misusing 14th Amendment For Illegal Aliens

December 14, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Black Activist… Warns Against Damage Caused By Misusing 14th Amendment For Illegal Aliens

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — A black activist urged Arizona Tea Party groups to oppose misuse of the 14th Amendment that has the effect of granting immediate citizenship to illegal aliens. He also said he wants Latinos liberated from their oppressive rulers. Warning against illegal immigration flooding the United States and overwhelming this nation’s voters, Ted Hayes told a meeting of north Phoenix’s Arizona Project Tea Party on December 3, “This might be our final hour in history, or it might be our finest hour, and it starts in Phoenix, Ariz.” He hoped the movement would pick up steam and make itself felt in Congress. Hayes, who has fought to help the homeless in California and has a daughter who…Continue Reading

Teaching Islam In American Schools

December 13, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Teaching Islam In American Schools

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK My hunch is that a significant number of readers of First Teachers will take issue with what I am about to say about the controversy that has erupted, most recently in Georgia and Tennessee, over how Islam is taught in American schools. Why do I say that? Because I have been following on Facebook the comments made by people on my side of the ideological divide, including some old neighborhood friends. Almost all of them are adamantly opposed to American children being taught, for example, the Five Pillars of Islam and the central elements of Sharia Law. The complaint is that including these themes in the curriculum is a form of religious indoctrination and a violation…Continue Reading
