Progressive Wordplay And Willful Deception

October 25, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Progressive Wordplay And Willful Deception

By REY FLORES I am sick and tired of the lies and deception enunciated election after election by the progressive left. It’s as if they think that we are either children or completely mindless, needing the statist government to babysit us because we are incapable of taking care of ourselves. The last Democratic presidential debate reconfirmed everything I have known about liberal progressives. It isn’t just during elections — but at election times it just seems to be on full hyper mode. Without a doubt, the word “progressive” is confusing to the low-information voters it targets and exploits because to the average dolt, the word “progress” means something positive. When I hear the word progressive, I think of it as…Continue Reading

The Synod Draws To A Close . . . The Faithful Need Formation And Preparation

October 24, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on The Synod Draws To A Close . . . The Faithful Need Formation And Preparation

By LOUISE KIRK The Family Synod is now in its final stages and, whatever its fruit, watching the workings of the Church from Rome is impressive. Yes, hot-button issues have evidently led to polarization on particular subjects, and yes, the Instrumentum Laboris, or working document of the synod, has been widely criticized, but you can see in their faces that the synod fathers have been deeply touched, even changed, by the whole synod process, and by Pope Francis as a calm fatherly presence in their midst. Bishop Eamon Martin of Armagh gave expression to this. “If we were all to go home tomorrow, if there were no final document, this synod would still have been worthwhile. As Pope Francis puts…Continue Reading

The Harmony Between Faith And Reason

By DONALD DeMARCO The story is told, in the realm of the mythic, where fantasy can assist our understanding of reality, of an ape who was tormented by an identity crisis. Taking the first step toward solving his dilemma, the troubled primate escaped from captivity in the Bronx Zoo. The fact that he was missing for some time touched off a wave of considerable anxiety among the citizenry in New York. At long last, and to everyone’s surprise, he was found sitting at a table in the city’s Public Library, holding a copy of Genesis in one hand and a copy of Darwin’s The Origin of Species in the other. “I had to find out,” the ape explained…Continue Reading

Help Restore The Shrine Of Christ The King

October 22, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Help Restore The Shrine Of Christ The King

By REY FLORES Early on Wednesday morning, October 7, the Shrine of Christ the King on the 6400 block of South Woodlawn in Chicago was ablaze, and it wasn’t the first time either. In 1976 a fire broke out at the then-St. Gelasius Church and put the edifice on the wrecking-ball list. Despite its condition, the church was never torn down and, after a successful renovation by the Institute of Christ the King at the old St. Mary’s in Wausau, Wis., the late Francis Cardinal George, OMI, invited the institute to use the building for its new parish and American headquarters in Chicago. No one was killed or injured in this most recent fire, but it certainly causes a major…Continue Reading

Even If She Won’t Say So . . . Nancy Pelosi’s Conscience Begs For Help

October 21, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Even If She Won’t Say So . . . Nancy Pelosi’s Conscience Begs For Help

By DEXTER DUGGAN You have a good friend who’s going downhill with an addiction, or running with a bad crowd. You can see how it’s hurting her but you’ve avoided mentioning it because you know she snapped at other people or stalked away as soon as they raised the topic. When she keeps suffering this way, is it really kindness for you to act as if nothing’s wrong? If she walked into quicksand but won’t ask for help because she thinks that would be an embarrassing admission she can’t read a map, would you let her keep sinking? U.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) seems increasingly troubled when she’s asked about permissive abortion. San Franciscan Pelosi knows that…Continue Reading

Planned Parenthood’s Talking Points

October 20, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Planned Parenthood’s Talking Points

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK I have never been involved in strategy sessions with a political party, so I have no inside knowledge about how talking points are put together and disseminated. But everyone understands that the primary objective is to provide representatives of the party with the positions they are to take when interviewed by the media. It has struck me for some time now that another goal is to give the party’s rank and file a quick retort to use when an issue of concern to the party comes up around the water cooler and over the backyard fence. I am sure that the Republicans engage in the effort as well, but the Democrats have been especially effective with…Continue Reading

Marriage The Path To Sanctity … Pope Francis Canonizes Louis And Zelie Martin

October 19, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Marriage The Path To Sanctity … Pope Francis Canonizes Louis And Zelie Martin

By LOUISE KIRK On Sunday, October 18, in the presence of the fathers gathered for the Family Synod in Rome, Pope Francis raised to the altars the first saints to be canonized as a married couple. Saints Zélie and Louis Martin made a striking and homely image on the façade of St. Peter’s. How surprised Louis would have been to see himself there on the same building to which he looked up with the young St. Thérèse on their pilgrimage to Rome. Fittingly for a married couple who prayed ardently for religious vocations, Zélie and Louis were canonized alongside an Italian priest, St. Vincenzo Grossi (1845-1917) and a Spanish nun, St. Maria dell’Immacolata Concezione (1926-1998). Some 50,000 people filled the…Continue Reading

Clarification . . . The Final Report Paragraphs Were Not Heterodox

(Editor’s Note: Fr. Brian Harrison sent us the letter below regarding the article entitled “Diary of a Synod…Confusions, Exclusions, and Mounting Indignation” in The Wanderer dated October 22, 2015.) + + + The Final Report Paragraphs Were Not Heterodox Editor, THE WANDERER: The following passage in the article entitled “Diary of a Synod…Confusions, Exclusions, and Mounting Indignation” in The Wanderer dated October 22, 2015 (p. 1A) is open to criticism: “Erdo gave a traditional and solid presentation of our Lord’s teaching on marriage and the family and thereby also countered his own involuntary participation in the scandalous midterm report of the 2014 synod where the heterodox statements were somehow slipped in, without his knowledge or approval. “Unexpectedly, however, Pope Francis…Continue Reading

Jerry Brown’s Busy Pen . . . Plunges California Deeper Into Culture Of Death

October 19, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Jerry Brown’s Busy Pen . . . Plunges California Deeper Into Culture Of Death

By DEXTER DUGGAN California’s legal stance on life is a dramatic warning of where the Democrat Party’s Culture of Death heads once it becomes dominant, as it is at the state legislature in Sacramento. Left-wing Democrat Gov. Jerry Brown recently signed into law the further expansion of permissive abortion and arrival of “assisted suicide.” The elderly Brown’s haggard appearance sometimes suggests Dr. Death himself. Some people, including within California’s institutional Catholic Church structure, hoped that Brown’s background as a former Jesuit seminarian would lead to a different result. However, a California pro-life activist told The Wanderer the hope wasn’t realistic. “I don’t care if (Brown) studied at the feet of all the apostles,” said Brian Johnston, chairman of the California…Continue Reading

The Synod On The Family . . . The Instrumentum Laboris Lets The Synod Down

October 18, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on The Synod On The Family . . . The Instrumentum Laboris Lets The Synod Down

By LOUISE KIRK It has been a dramatic week for those following the Family Synod. First we were told that the relator general, Peter Cardinal Erdo, was being silenced after his resounding defense of Church teaching. Then 13 senior cardinals (the figure was later changed to possibly nine) under the leadership of George Cardinal Pell had written to the Pope objecting to the way the synod was being run. They were particularly concerned about the composition of the drafting committee for the Final Report. Further rumors suggested that the final report was already being written even before the working groups had done their work. At the end of last week, possibly in the face of this criticism, it was stated…Continue Reading
