Laudato Si: Sic Et Non

June 28, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Laudato Si: Sic Et Non

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK   Remember the scene in A Man for All Seasons, where Paul Scofield, playing St. Thomas More, diligently scours through the oath issued by King Henry VIII demanding recognition of his marriage to Anne Boleyn, looking for “some way that we can take this oath” without violating his conscience? I felt that way when I started reading Laudato Si, Pope Francis’ encyclical on climate change. Thomas More found that he could not in good conscience accept what Henry VIII was demanding. I don’t have that problem with Laudato Si (literally “Be praised” or “Praise to you”). I found the passages I was looking for. I can live with the encyclical. “Live with it?” Does that…Continue Reading

Is Third World America Inevitable?

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN Thousands of U.S. troops safeguard the border of South Korea. U.S. warships patrol the South China Sea to stand witness to the territorial claims of Asian allies against China. U.S. troops move in and out of the Baltic States to signal our willingness to defend the frontiers of these tiny NATO allies. Yet nothing that happens on these borders imperils America so much as what is happening on our own bleeding border with Mexico. Over three decades, that border has been a causeway into the USA for millions of illegal immigrants who are changing the face of America — to the delight of those who think the country we grew up in was ugly. All sides…Continue Reading

Satan Dons The Black Robes of “Justice” Again . . .

June 26, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Satan Dons The Black Robes of “Justice” Again . . .

Not since Roe v. Wade in 1973 has the U.S. Supreme Court handed down a decision so diabolical in its contents and consequences. This 5-4 ruling allowing same-sex marriage may have implications beyond anyone’s wildest expectations, with threats to the rights of Catholics, other Christians, Orthodox Jews, and more. Again this nation has exhibited its tendency to enact its own laws in the face of the laws of God and nature. How can we truthfully say “God bless America” anymore? Remember that God will not be mocked. We now have to be on our knees with a resounding plea: “God have mercy on America.” — Joseph Matt, The Wanderer

Catholic Exceptionalism: Worth Fighting For

June 26, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Catholic Exceptionalism: Worth Fighting For

By REY FLORES We have heard the expression “American exceptionalism,” and this I believe is true, although in the current era, our nation has been anything but exceptional. As Catholics, however, we are exceptional simply by being baptized into our Church — and living up to that isn’t going to be easy, but it is well worth the fight. There happens to be a dark cloud that hovers over us all, but beneath that cloud, there are lower-lying clouds that are unique and exclusive to each one of us. We all carry a cross — some crosses are given to us, while other crosses are ones that we built and thrust upon ourselves. But the one thing that is certain…Continue Reading

New Coulter Book Shows . . .. Crime Has No Race, But Criminals Know How To Play Racial Game

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — The liberal Boston Globe’s Sunday, June 14, front page had a prominent photo of a scowling, middle-aged man with the headline, “Don’t take your eyes off this man (or the hundreds like him); They were warned, but federal immigration officials did just that.” The elusive man was identified as Santos Hernandez Carrera, a knifepoint rapist. The lengthy story told of immigrant criminals, some but not all of them with Latino names, simply released by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) because their home countries wouldn’t take them back. “They are convicted rapists, child molesters, and kidnappers — among ‘the worst of the worst,’ as one law-enforcement agency put it,” the Globe reporter wrote. “Yet the…Continue Reading

Obamatrade’s Conga Line . . . Have Elite Party Leaders Finally Misstepped Too Far?

June 24, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Obamatrade’s Conga Line . . . Have Elite Party Leaders Finally Misstepped Too Far?

By DEXTER DUGGAN What could it take to shake the ponderous Republican Party congressional leadership out of its determination to deliver a harmful globalist trade deal that would mean a major triumph to enhance the clout of the Republicans’ most powerful, arbitrary, and deceitful foe, Barack Obama? Just to ask the question is to reveal the depths GOP leaders had sunk to. This was a totally self-inflicted wound after they’d been on top of the world with victory in the November 2014 elections. They’d been empowered by voters to rein in and constrict the out-of-control Obama. But before you could blink an eye, diffident GOP leaders like the Senate’s Mitch McConnell and the House’s John Boehner desperately were waving their…Continue Reading

Don’t Miss This Week’s Print Edition Of The Wanderer . . .

There is much to be concerned with the Pope’s new encyclical on the environment, such as the “scientific advisers” who were consulted for this document, as well as some of the “accepted scientific theory” treated as fact in Laudato Si. Unsurprisingly, a firestorm of criticism has erupted on the Internet and over the airwaves about the Pope’s new encyclical. James K. Fitzpatrick’s front-page column for The Wanderer this week reminds us about what seems to be lost in the conflict: “The Church claims authority only in faith and morals, not in science and economics.” On the other hand, Fr. Kevin M. Cusick’s column highlights the portions of the document where Catholic teaching does play an important role. The Pope has…Continue Reading

Sacra Liturgia USA 2015 Conference . . . What Will The “Reform Of The Reform” Look Like?

June 23, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Sacra Liturgia USA 2015 Conference . . . What Will The “Reform Of The Reform” Look Like?

By JAMES MONTI His Eminence Raymond Cardinal Burke took a front row seat in the audience for the morning session of talks on Day Two (Tuesday, June 2) of the Sacra Liturgia USA 2015 conference in New York City. The Tuesday proceedings began with a presentation by the accomplished author and liturgical scholar Fr. Thomas Kocik, a contributor to Dom Alcuin Reid’s forthcoming T&T Clark Companion to Liturgy. Addressing the key concept of a “Reform of the Reform” in the sacred liturgy, Fr. Kocik outlined the diversity of opinions as to how such a reform should be carried out. He endorsed an approach that takes the 1962 Missale Romanum as its starting point. Noting that the liturgical reform should address…Continue Reading

Milquetoast Mass While Our House Is On Fire

June 21, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Milquetoast Mass While Our House Is On Fire

By REY FLORES This past Sunday due to family scheduling conflicts, I attended Sunday Mass at a nearby parish instead of our family’s parish, which is about 75 miles away from our home. Given that I have attended the Traditional Latin Mass exclusively for the past 12 years, it’s always an adventure for me when I attend a Novus Ordo Mass at a parish that is completely new to me. I always find it interesting to see how crowded the parking lots and pews are, but it’s almost as if people are there because they have to be there, not because they want to be there. Almost immediately upon entering the church a couple of minutes late, I hear the…Continue Reading

Why Are The Bad Guys Winning In The Middle East?

June 20, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Why Are The Bad Guys Winning In The Middle East?

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK When I was a young man, there was a period of years when I was intrigued by argument that history was moving along a predetermined plan determined by God. It was a proposition that seemed plausible to me because it seemed that the “good buys” always emerged triumphant in the great conflicts of each era, even if it took some time. You can see why I was willing to buy into the theory. Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, and Tojo got their comeuppance. Napoleon was eventually stopped. The Moors were driven from Spain. The Soviet Union crumbled. I am sure you could add to the list. But I eventually gave up trying to make the events of history…Continue Reading
