In the Garden of Sodom . . . Forbidden Fruit Becomes The Centerpiece At Banquet Table

June 19, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on In the Garden of Sodom . . . Forbidden Fruit Becomes The Centerpiece At Banquet Table

By DEXTER DUGGAN The wily serpent in the Garden of Sodom said that of course God was right that you shouldn’t eat the fruit of that certain tree. But surely you can just lick its skin. It needs to look all shiny; you’d only be helping God’s creation look better, as He intended. Now, the serpent said, I’ve just nicked off a tiny bit of its skin for you to put on your tongue. That’s not taking a bite, which God rightly forbade. He just wants you to appreciate the complexity of His creation, all rightly arranged, from the skin to the seeds. Think of this, the serpent said. When He made His restriction, God probably only meant the fruit…Continue Reading

Pope’s Encyclical . . . At First Glance

June 18, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Pope’s Encyclical . . . At First Glance

The international coalition Voice of the Family is deeply concerned by the omission from the encyclical letter Laudato Si of a reaffirmation of the Church’s teaching against contraception and on procreation as the primary end of the sexual act. The encyclical, published this morning [June 18], contains the welcome assertions that “concern for the protection of nature is also incompatible with the justification of abortion” (n. 120) and “that demographic growth is fully compatible with an integral and shared development” (n. 50). However, the omission of any reference to Church teaching on the use of contraception leaves Catholics ill-prepared to resist the international population control agenda. “God commanded man to ‘increase and multiply, and fill the earth’ (Gen. 1:28),” said…Continue Reading

Where Is The Outcry? . . . The Execution Of Babies In The Womb

June 18, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Where Is The Outcry? . . . The Execution Of Babies In The Womb

By JOHN YOUNG A strong campaign is underway to abolish the death penalty. This has been highlighted by the outrage expressed in various countries at the death sentence verdict against the Boston Marathon bomber, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Various reasons are given as to why the practice should be outlawed. It is inhuman and cruel, say its opponents, who cite instances where something has gone wrong and the person being executed has endured serious suffering. Or the victim may later be found to be innocent, and the state should not take the risk of having put an innocent person to death. Instances are given where this injustice has occurred. A further point made by the opponents of capital punishment is that it…Continue Reading

Sacra Liturgia USA 2015 Conference . . . The New Liturgical Movement Makes Progress

June 17, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Sacra Liturgia USA 2015 Conference . . . The New Liturgical Movement Makes Progress

By JAMES MONTI Described by one co-organizer, Dr. Jennifer Donelson, as a four-day ascent of Mount Tabor to be with the Lord and with one another, the Sacra Liturgia USA 2015 conference began on June 1 with introductory messages of hope and encouragement for the progress of the new liturgical movement initiated by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, bolstered by news that His Holiness Pope Francis has expressed his desire that his Predecessor’s liturgical movement should by all means be continued. The first and second days of the conference were graced by the most distinguished presence of one of the greatest promoters of Pope Benedict’s liturgical vision for the Church, Raymond Cardinal Burke, likewise esteemed for his apostolic courage in upholding…Continue Reading

Former California Congressman Says . . . Republican Push For Obamatrade “Cowardly And Inexplicable”

June 16, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Former California Congressman Says . . . Republican Push For Obamatrade “Cowardly And Inexplicable”

By DEXTER DUGGAN Strong Republican congressional efforts to help approve Barack Obama’s secretly devised international trade legislation are “the most cowardly and inexplicable move within the Republican ranks today,” a quotable conservative former southern California congressman told The Wanderer in a telephone interview. Robert Dornan, who had been an actor and Los Angeles television talk host before first being elected to the U.S. House as a Republican in 1976, is one of numerous conservatives appalled that his party’s leadership has been fighting to give the deceitful Obama more power over the U.S. economy while hurting this nation’s workers. “If we’re going to be the party of job creation, this is not job creation,” Dornan said of the package being called…Continue Reading

The Bamboo Ceiling

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK I wonder how many Americans would be opposed to affirmative action programs being used in college admissions, if the process were carried out fairly and without a political axe to grind? I bet not many. My guess is that most people would agree that a conscientious minority student from a dysfunctional inner-city high school may have more academic potential than a wealthy student who attends private schools and expensive SAT prep programs — even if the minority student’s scores on standardized tests are significantly lower than the wealthy student’s. One can see why colleges would want to find a spot for minority students like that. They are not “inferior” candidates, and well may bring great prestige…Continue Reading

We Are Not Bigots, Haters, Or Homophobes!

By REY FLORES “Now, therefore, I, Rey Flores, columnist for The Wanderer Press of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim that you will no longer ever be referred to as a hater, a bigot, a homophobe, a racist, a misogynist, a transphobe — or any other kind of ‘phobe,’ for that matter; and you may exercise your First Amendment rights without an ounce of guilt and with every bit of the truth.” + + + Just because you disagree with a socialist, a homosexual, a militant feminist, a person who is of a different race or ethnicity from you or…Continue Reading

Cardinal Burke At Sacra Liturgia . . . Losing Beauty Has Led To The Loss Of Truth And Goodness

June 13, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Cardinal Burke At Sacra Liturgia . . . Losing Beauty Has Led To The Loss Of Truth And Goodness

By JAMES MONTI NEW YORK — Welcomed with rounds of avid applause, His Eminence Raymond Cardinal Burke inspired and delighted a large assembly of priests, seminarians, religious, and laity gathered for the Sacra Liturgia USA 2015 conference held at Hunter College in New York City, June 1-4. His keynote address on Day One (June 1) of Sacra Liturgia, “Beauty in the Liturgy and the Beauty of a Holy Life,” annunciated several of the principal themes of the conference, most notably the vital role of beauty in liturgical rites and ecclesiastical art, architecture, and furnishings. Describing the sacred liturgy as our participation in “the Heavenly Marriage Feast of Heaven,” His Eminence set forth as the basis of his presentation the proposition…Continue Reading

On Leaving The Church

June 12, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on On Leaving The Church

By DONALD DeMARCO The door of the Catholic Church, like all the doors of this world, serves as both an entrance as well as an exit. Membership in the Church of Rome is entirely voluntary. Those who enter the Church are greeted with joy; those who make their exit evoke sadness. As far as the secular world is concerned, however, the reverse may be the case. A major Canadian newspaper recently (May 17, 2015) offered a five-column spread to a prominent ex-Catholic to explain his defection to the Anglican Church. Converts enter the Church with incomparably less media fanfare. Since his reasons for leaving the Church may be attractive if not convincing to some people, it is appropriate to challenge…Continue Reading

Defending St. Thomas More . . . A Critique Of Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall In Its Screen Adaptation

By JAMES MONTI Part 2 (Editor’s Note: James Monti, the author of this two-part series, wrote The King’s Good Servant but God’s First: The Life and Writings of Saint Thomas More [San Francisco: Ignatius Press, 1997].) + + + As for Thomas More’s involvement as a governmental official in the execution of heretics, historians have only been able to identify six cases in which he played a direct or indirect role during his tenure as lord chancellor, (1) certainly not a spectacular number when compared with other parts of Europe (2) or with the five-year reign of the Catholic Queen Mary (1553-1558), during which 277 were put to death. (3) In early June of 1535, while More was languishing in…Continue Reading
