How Do You Solve A Problem Like Marie Harf?

March 13, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on How Do You Solve A Problem Like Marie Harf?

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK Unlike “Maria,” the Julie Andrews’ character in The Sound of Music, you can’t describe State Department spokesperson Marie Harf as “a flibbertijibbet, a will-o’-the wisp, and a clown.” She is a Washington careerist with considerable experience as a policy analyst in the State Department. Nonetheless, she has become a laughingstock because of her comments about how the United States should deal with the ISIS terrorists. Her critics on the right are guffawing, while those on the left are lifting an eyebrow and looking for ways to change the subject. I say don’t laugh at Harf. She is telling us a great deal about the thinking of the elites in government (when liberal Democrats are in control),…Continue Reading

The Effects Of National Self-Delusion . . . Low Fertility Rates Bring About The Ruin Of Countries

March 12, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on The Effects Of National Self-Delusion . . . Low Fertility Rates Bring About The Ruin Of Countries

By LAWRENCE P. GRAYSON Oh, what a tangled web we weave: When first we practice to deceive! These lines, written by Sir Walter Scott over 200 years ago, aptly describe the complex, unforeseen destructive effects that self-deception is having on Western society. Politically correct notions advanced by the mainstream media are convincing people that abortion is a woman’s choice, assisted suicide is death with dignity, a union between two people of the same sex is marriage, and gender is a personal option. These lies are destroying the countries of the West, not only from the point of view of culture, but demographically. A society that does not value children, that kills them in the womb, that creates unions that cannot…Continue Reading

The Silent War On Mideast Christians

March 11, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on The Silent War On Mideast Christians

By JOHN J. METZLER UNITED NATIONS — The spate of brutal and systematic attacks on Christian communities in Syria, Iraq, and Egypt by the Islamic State has surged. Yet despite this targeted violence, there’s a climate of international indifference by many governments and even some Christian communities in the West toward this modern-day religious persecution. Look at the recent roster of IS terror: In Libya, jihadi militants capture and then behead 21 Coptic Christians from Egypt. This barbaric attack prompted the UN Security Council to issue a statement condemning the “heinous and cowardly” murders. The UN council added, “ISIL must be defeated and the intolerance, violence, and hatred it espouses must be stamped out.”

Show GOP Honchos The Exit Door . . . Republican Leaders Give Obama What He Wants For Amnesty

March 10, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Show GOP Honchos The Exit Door . . . Republican Leaders Give Obama What He Wants For Amnesty

By DEXTER DUGGAN There’s no need for Congress to pass “comprehensive immigration reform” any longer. When the Republican-led House voted on March 3 to provide full funding for the Department of Homeland Security, including money for lawless Barack Obama’s November 20 “executive action” on immigration, Obama received all the tools he needs. The previous week, the Republican-led Senate also passed the full DHS funding. Obama has been ratified in his freedom to declare lawlessly that anyone he pleases can enter, and remain in, the United States — the tens of millions of aliens already here, and however many more endless tens of millions dash in now to enjoy the taxpayer-funded lifestyle he’ll provide. Oh, Obama still can say how badly…Continue Reading

One More Time: Joseph Farah Vs. Pope Francis

March 9, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on One More Time: Joseph Farah Vs. Pope Francis

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK We continue to get letters about syndicated columnist Joseph Farah’s criticism of Pope Francis’ views on evolution, which we reproduced in the First Teachers column of January 22. Farah was reacting to Pope Francis’ comments before the Pontifical Academy of Sciences in the fall of last year, where he stated, “God is not…a magician, but the Creator who brought everything to life. Evolution in nature is not inconsistent with the notion of creation, because evolution requires the creation of beings that evolve.” This was not the first time a Pope has spoken on this matter. In 1996, also while speaking before the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, Pope John Paul II observed that Pius XII’s encyclical Humani…Continue Reading

New San Diego Bishop’s Appointment… Casts Doubt On Hopes For Church Stability

March 8, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on New San Diego Bishop’s Appointment… Casts Doubt On Hopes For Church Stability

By DEXTER DUGGAN San Francisco-born Robert McElroy might have become the archbishop of the City by the Bay, while San Diego-born Salvatore Cordileone could have been bishop of that metropolis next to Mexico, but the might-have-beens and what-ifs of life must defer to realities. Even if those realities might resemble playing musical chairs. Ordained an auxiliary bishop for San Francisco in 2010, McElroy was announced as the sixth bishop of San Diego on March 3. Cordileone, ordained auxiliary bishop of San Diego in 2002, became archbishop of San Francisco in 2012 after a stop as bishop of Oakland beginning in 2009. And who fills the episcopal seats depends on who sits on a certain throne in Rome. As different as…Continue Reading

Tears For Old Notre Dame

March 7, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Tears For Old Notre Dame

By CHRISTOPHER MANION On February 25, The Wanderer, America, The Church, and unborn babies everywhere lost a great friend when Charles E. Rice, Professor of Constitutional Law at Notre Dame, crossed the river to receive his eternal reward. A frequent contributor to these pages, Dr. Rice is known worldwide as a pioneer in the front lines of the pro-life movement since its very inception. A Marine all his life (“There’s no such things as an ‘ex-Marine’!”), he personified the motto that motivated his service, his faith, his family, and his life: “Semper Fi.” A graduate of Boston College Law School, Rice began his teaching career at Fordham, but soon came to Notre Dame with a new law dean, who quickly…Continue Reading

Under “Same-Sex” Assault . . . Florist “Just So Grateful” For Support, Says Attorney

March 6, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Under “Same-Sex” Assault . . . Florist “Just So Grateful” For Support, Says Attorney

By DEXTER DUGGAN The video begins with Barronelle Stutzman, a florist in Washington state, sifting through letters at a dining table covered with a flower-patterned white cloth, with the Bible at hand. “She has received a lot of letters of support,” as well as some hate mail, attorney Kristen Waggoner told The Wanderer, adding that each letter matters to her. “She reads it and she cries. She’s just so grateful” for the support expressed. Stutzman is the owner of Arlene’s Flowers, in Richland, Wash., who has been targeted by a powerful legal assault to force her to celebrate “same-sex marriage,” contrary to her Christian beliefs. Homosexual activists used to taunt people opposed to their crusade by asking, “How does my…Continue Reading

Mock Outrage? Or Fuzzy Thinking? Protesting Archbishop Cordileone’s Morality Clause

March 5, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Mock Outrage? Or Fuzzy Thinking? Protesting Archbishop Cordileone’s Morality Clause

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK The headline in The Los Angeles Times on February 12 read: “S.F. archbishop’s imposition of morality clause at schools outrages many.” When I read the story, the first words that came to mind were “phony outrage” and “crocodile tears.” I was convinced that what we were seeing were examples of disingenuous protestations by left-wing pressure groups to shape public opinion. Outrage? Over what? An archbishop defending the teachings of the Catholic Church? Then I had second thoughts. I began to lean toward the explanation that the expressions of outrage were sincere; that the people up-in-arms over the archbishop’s position were genuinely convinced that they were taking a stand against a great injustice — even though they…Continue Reading

Namibia’s Nemesis

March 4, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Namibia’s Nemesis

By BRIAN CLOWES The moonless night was pitch black, and I could see nothing. But I could hear several small children playing and laughing a few yards away. I pointed my bright laser pointer at the schoolhouse wall right over where I guessed their heads would be, and there was instant complete silence. Then the kids started to chase the bright red dot like a bunch of kittens, screaming with delight. After several minutes of this, Fr. Boquet walked over and showed them how the laser pointer worked. Our Human Life International team was relaxing over a late supper after finishing an intensive four-day pro-life training session for community leaders in Rundu, at the northeastern corner of Namibia, just off…Continue Reading
