Alex Schadenberg . . . Decries Canadian Supreme Court’s Striking Down Assisted Suicide Ban

By PEGGY MOEN ST. PAUL — The Supreme Court of Canada made “a horrific decision” when it struck down the country’s ban on assisted suicide, said Alex Schadenberg, executive director of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition, here to address the February 11 Legislative Dinner of Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life. In his remarks, Schadenberg said the court’s February 6 ruling used “totally subjective” language, leaving Parliament to decide many particulars without objective standards to guide it. He said the ruling would allow both assisted suicide and euthanasia. Assisted suicide, he explained, is when someone helps you to take your own life, while euthanasia is when someone “lethally injects you.” Of the decision, he said: “You need to read it . .…Continue Reading

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK In the January 15 issue of First Teachers, we published portions of a letter from John Lyon to the administration at the University of Notre Dame, questioning the university’s decision to create a student organization designed, writes Lyon, “to provide peer- to-peer support, direct service opportunities, and friendship” for homosexual students, along with “the creation of a committee to advise the Vice President for Student Affairs on relevant matters, and the hiring of a full-time Student Development Professional in this area.” Lyon is an alumnus of the Notre Dame and a retired professor and university administrator with many years of experience.

What Do Human Rights Mean Anymore?

By REY FLORES For months now, we have been seeing pictures and watching videos of many Christians in parts of Africa, the Middle East, and Europe being persecuted, beheaded, raped, murdered, and even burned alive. It’s hard not to see any of this if you’re anywhere near the Internet. What I see in the faces of the recently beheaded 21 Coptic Christians in Egypt is courage. The fearlessness in their faces was that of martyrs, pure and simple. These men could have fought back and at least made it difficult for the Muslim extremists to carry out their deadly plan, but instead they were heroically stoic and ready to accept God’s will. I have stopped watching these videos because I…Continue Reading

Equality And Inequality: A Christian Perspective

February 21, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Equality And Inequality: A Christian Perspective

By PHILIP TROWER Every educated Westerner knows how making all human beings equal came to be regarded as what ought to be one of the three main goals of any decent society. Roughly 250 years ago a gifted and not unendearing literary vagabond with ideas like dynamite persuaded a decadent once-Christian ruling class and intelligentsia that the notion of hierarchy or of one man or woman being in any way superior or inferior to another was in some way demeaning and an affront to human dignity. We were initially all in every respect equal and we must do everything to restore ourselves to that state. What remains difficult to understand is how so many gifted and well-meaning people remain wedded…Continue Reading

With “American Sniper” Movie… Radio Host Suggests Return Of Moral Seriousness

By DEXTER DUGGAN SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The financial and cultural blockbuster movie American Sniper had a private screening in one of the theaters in a multiplex in this Phoenix suburb. By grim coincidence, it was the same day, February 11, that testimony in Texas began in the murder trial of the movie’s real-life central character, Navy sniper Chris Kyle, killed in 2013 back home from the battlefield, and also the day that front pages across the nation carried confirmation of the death in the Mideast of young aid worker Kayla Mueller, who’d lived in the Arizona mountain town of Prescott. In the 1950s and 1960s, “Afghanistanism” meant being so disconnected from important events that a person looked only far away…Continue Reading

The View From Arizona . . . Violating The Borders Of Good Faith

February 19, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on The View From Arizona . . . Violating The Borders Of Good Faith

By DEXTER DUGGAN Having an exchange of thought on an issue requires that there be some commonality of concepts. If the issue is whether to extend a freeway, the discussion won’t get far if one side reasonably says a mile is 5,280 feet long while the other side insists a mile is 222 feet and anyone who disagrees is a bigot. Or if the first side says bicycles and horses can’t be allowed as regular modes of travel on the freeway while the other side argues this is discrimination against people who need to exercise and those who admire equine beauty. The first side is likely to conclude that the second side simply won’t be candid. This division is familiar…Continue Reading

Downhill In San Francisco . . . Babies Don’t Cause Poverty, But Poor Reasoning Births Poor Conclusions

By DEXTER DUGGAN SAN FRANCISCO — It might seem surprising to the out-of-towner that liberal San Francisco, resplendent in liberal Democrat-controlled California, has so many panhandlers. The traveler might think that here, of all places, the needy would have their desires adequately addressed by government. If the visitor plans to stay here a while but doesn’t want to finance downcast supplicants’ possible bad habits, he might want to get a supply of small cards to hand out with contact information for local charitable agencies. If the supplicants need that reminder. Does government liberalism breed more dependency, as conservatives assert? It hurts to see a woman near City Hall with a cluster of blisters on her hand ask for money “for…Continue Reading

Rev. Wright’s Star Pupil

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN “A steady patriot of the world alone, “The friend of every country — but his own.” George Canning’s couplet about the Englishmen who professed love for all the world except their own native land comes to mind on reading Obama’s remarks at the National Prayer Breakfast. After listing the horrors of ISIS, al-Qaeda, and Boko Haram, the president decided his recital of crimes committed in the name of Islam would be unbalanced, if he did not backhand those smug Christians sitting right in front of him. “And lest we get on our high horse . . . remember that during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ. In our…Continue Reading

Same-Sex Locker Rooms? Don’t Laugh

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK Phyllis Schlafly devoted a recent column to current demands from the radical feminists and the homosexual lobby and their allies in the education establishment. At first glance, the demands seem so beyond the pale that the temptation is to not take them seriously. That would be a mistake. Many of us reacted that way when the idea of same-sex marriage was first trotted out. Schlafly reports that the “Obama administration is now trying to outlaw single-sex classrooms, a practice that has been growing as parents and teachers see its good results.” Schlafly sees this as part of the demand by feminists “who believe in the interchangeability of the genders and insist that schools forbid any deviation…Continue Reading

Calling All Pro-Life Youth!

February 15, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Calling All Pro-Life Youth!

By REY FLORES A call to action is being put out by none other than yours truly. I’m calling all the Catholic youth in America who receive this message from their parents, their family, their friends, their priests, their teachers, or anyone else reading this article. This past January, we saw the largest ever March for Life in Washington, D.C., with an estimated 650,000 participants. While the crowd consisted of all ages, without a doubt, in my estimation, I would say that over 75 percent of attendees were under 30 years of age, all the way down to newborns. This truly is the pro-life generation and the momentum is building. We need you now more than ever! Hang in there…Continue Reading
