GOP Majority . . . Gets Its Chance To Defang Obama’s War Against Women

January 14, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on GOP Majority . . . Gets Its Chance To Defang Obama’s War Against Women

By DEXTER DUGGAN Those who urge that the new Republican majority Congress should concentrate on modest, bipartisan measures and avoid getting in fights with Barack Obama are rejecting the message of last November’s “wave” election. The majority of voters, disgusted with Democrat Obama’s lawless agenda, empowered the GOP to fight for them, not to have deceptive garden parties on the White House lawn where politicians blur essential differences and put off decisive reforms forever. That would be more of the smoke and mirrors that left the voters choking in outrage. To give one example, the new Republican Congress should have a bill on Obama’s desk by the beginning of February that repeals the staggeringly awful Obamacare.

An Open Letter to Notre Dame’s Administration

January 12, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on An Open Letter to Notre Dame’s Administration

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK John Lyon, a retired professor and university administrator with many years of experience, has agreed to share with readers of First Teachers portions of a letter he sent to the administration and board of trustees of the University of Notre Dame. Lyon is an alumnus of the university. His letter addresses the document issued by Notre Dame that established its “Pastoral Plan for the Support and Holistic Development of GLBTQ and Heterosexual Students.” Lyon argues that Notre Dame is attempting “to negotiate an impossible geometry between the square of Church teaching and general natural law argument about homosexuality, and the circle of pastoral care for the aberrant. To complicate the negotiation, it takes place against the…Continue Reading

“Emangelizing” With Cardinal Burke

By REY FLORES It’s been a growing problem that men have taken a back seat to being the spiritual heads of their own households. This is no accident. This is the result of the rampant social engineering that hates marriage, families, and human life itself. I call it the “Homerization” of our nation, where men are portrayed in popular culture as useless dolts who care for nothing more than their own selfish desires and needs. I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again: We went from “Father Knows Best” to “Father Knows Nothing.” We have become a soft-in-the-middle army of Homer Simpson-like cartoon characters, asleep on the couch with a TV remote in our hands, as the souls of…Continue Reading

Reflections On Self-Love

January 10, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Reflections On Self-Love

By ALICE VON HILDEBRAND How should one relate to oneself, being oneself? In other words, what is the love we should have for ourselves and how does this love differ from our love for God and for our neighbors — that we are commanded to love as ourselves? It is a huge topic. All I intend to do is to share a few thoughts that might throw some modest light on this crucial question. One thing is clear: Our relationship to ourselves differs radically from our relationship to God and other persons — all of them being characterized by their I-thou character. Being myself, I cannot possibly have an I-thou relationship with myself. On the other hand, a love of…Continue Reading

By JUNNO AROCHO ESTEVES VATICAN CITY (ZENIT) — Pope Francis denounced the January 7 attack by terrorists at the offices of Paris magazine Charlie Hebdo in a statement released by the Holy See Press Office. The bishops’ conference of France also released a statement condemning the deadly attack. Two hooded men, armed with Kalashnikov submachine guns, stormed the offices and opened fire at journalists, murdering 12. The attack is believed to be in retaliation for caricatures of the prophet Muhammad printed three years ago. A cartoon of Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was tweeted earlier before the attacks.

As N.Y. Police Call Leftist Mayor To Account . . . U.S. Voters Closely Watch How GOP Uses New Clout

By DEXTER DUGGAN New York City police finally were fed up with their city’s left-wing mayor, Bill de Blasio, who, along with other liberal Democrat politicians, had been fanning dangerous fears of deadly racism by police. The law officers emphatically showed their contempt for de Blasio by turning their backs on him in emotional, dramatic hospital and funeral settings after an unstable attacker assassinated two police officers at random in Brooklyn on December 20 before he killed himself. The attacker had posted messages indicating he was taking revenge for the deaths of two blacks during confrontations with police. Like other liberal Democrats, de Blasio seemed to have thought he could stir the racial pot repeatedly without earning himself the resentment…Continue Reading

Don’t Blame It On Obama

January 7, 2015 Frontpage Comments Off on Don’t Blame It On Obama

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK We are told it is bad form to gloat, to crow, to engage in schadenfreude when an adversary suffers a comeuppance; that it would be more mature to offer “constructive criticism” than engage in the “blame game.” Fair enough: I guess it makes sense. It is nice to be nice. Yet it strikes me that those who refused to buy into all the hoopla when Barack Obama first made his appearance on the national stage deserve to be cut some slack if they rub it in a bit. The president’s fall from grace has been so dramatic it deserves a spotlight. Who ever thought that Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and Chris Matthews would be leading the…Continue Reading

California Adoption Home . . . Aims To Enrich Lives Of Pregnant Moms

By DEXTER DUGGAN ESCONDIDO, Calif. — The young woman was in jail on a charge of smuggling drugs over the border. She’d already borne two babies with different fathers — two men whose “bad lifestyles” led to their own early deaths. Now she was pregnant again but wouldn’t consider adoption because, according to her Mexican culture, “even a dog wouldn’t do that,” giving up its puppies to someone else. She had an abortion scheduled soon but was persuaded to have an ultrasound. “I didn’t know my baby had fingers,” she said upon seeing images of the unborn child. She went to a maternity home specializing in adoption, turned her life around, and went on to become a medical assistant.
