His Eminence Cardinal Burke . . . Neither Bishops Nor Pope Can Change Christ’s Teaching on Marriage

October 30, 2014 – 4:27 AM By Terence P. Jeffrey Can a pope change Catholic teaching on marriage? When the synod of bishops that Pope Francis has called to discuss the family was meeting in Rome earlier this month, someone not particularly familiar with the Catholic faith might have presumed the answer was yes. The synod, for example, released a midterm report with a section headed: “Positive aspects of civil unions and cohabitation.” Yet the Catholic Catechism states: “The Lord Jesus insisted on the original intention of

By DEXTER DUGGAN An investigation of the Vatican’s social-justice agency’s involvement with an international socialist-Communist organization has evoked shock and outrage, a pro-life researcher into the agency, Michael Hichborn, told The Wanderer. Hichborn, a researcher, activist, and commentator with the Virginia-based American Life League (ALL), appears in an ALL video about the Vatican’s Caritas Internationalis’ cooperation with and contribution of leadership to the World Social Forum (WSF). In an October 7 news release, ALL says, “Evidence, from both primary sources and explosive video, highlights ALL’s report showing conclusively that the World Social Forum is a radically Communist and pro-abortion organization pushing for world revolution. According to both internal

By DEXTER DUGGAN It was a nightmare image. Smugly smiling Pope Francis gives a thumbs-up as he wears a mitre emblazoned with the rainbow colors of homosexual radicals. It wasn’t an image done by the Pope’s detractors. It was an approving editorial cartoon in the United States, drawn by a gratified pro-homosexual left-winger after the recent Synod on the Family. The Pope actually promoting homosexuality? Whatever the message in Rome turned out to be, left-wing media again were adjusting it to fit their agenda.

Faith And The Ballot Box

By LAWRENCE P. GRAYSON On November 4, people across this nation will have an opportunity to vote for those who will represent them at the federal, state, and local levels. The work of these representatives, who will enact the laws and regulations under which we live, will significantly affect our lives for years to come. The challenges before the nation are serious, highly political, and profoundly moral. There is the continuing destruction of unborn children through abortion and new efforts to eliminate the elderly through euthanasia and assisted suicide; movements to coerce Catholic health care, education, and social service ministries to violate their religious beliefs; efforts to undermine marriage as the permanent union of one man and one woman; and…Continue Reading

Ebola, Ideology, And Common Sense

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN Growing up in Washington in the 1930s and 1940s, our home was, several times, put under quarantine. A poster would be tacked on the door indicating the presence within of a contagious disease — measles, mumps, chicken pox, scarlet fever. None of us believed we were victims of some sort of invidious discrimination against large Catholic families. It was a given that public health authorities were trying to contain the spread of a disease threatening the health of children. Out came the Monopoly board. Polio, or infantile paralysis, was the most fearsome of those diseases. The first two national Boy Scout jamborees, which were to be held in Washington in 1935 and 1936, were canceled by…Continue Reading

The Fundamentally Changed America

By REY FLORES I recall driving home that cold November evening in 2008, with a sense of doom and fear after learning that Barack Obama, the Illinois state senator whom I had met on several occasions when I was a writer for The Chicago Tribune, had just been elected president. I kid you not — as I looked up at the clear night sky that evening, I saw a crescent moon and a star! People at my office were angry at me the next day because I had told them that Obama would never get elected. I said that it was impossible, and that the American people just couldn’t be that stupid. Not only were there plenty of stupid, low-information…Continue Reading

Seven Levels Of Belonging

By DONALD DeMARCO The dictionary is not a very good teacher of philosophy. Its definitions are limited and fail to show the wondrous versatility of the word. Philosophy, on the other hand, loves analogies, metaphors, shadings, and nuances. Moreover, it likes to put the various meanings in order. Consider the word “belonging.” The dictionary fails to reveal its breadth and how its various meanings are all connecting with each other and form a ladder that ascends from the humblest to the highest. The following seven levels of belonging illustrate the dictionary’s need for philosophical explication. Position: On the humblest level, the jigsaw puzzle offers us a good illustration. “Where does this piece belong?” someone asks. Its peculiar shape and contour…Continue Reading

The Son Of Man

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK Joel J. Miller identifies himself as a writer “whose perspective is informed by the teaching tradition of the Eastern Orthodox Church.” His blog site, Two Cities, is designed, he writes, to “explore how Christians can practice the historic faith in a modern context while navigating its many challenges and pitfalls.” Miller is widely published, with articles appearing in publications such as Reason, The American Spectator, and National Review. I don’t know anything else about Miller, but one of his recent posts helped me understand something I have never been able to get a handle on: the term “Son of Man” that Jesus used to describe Himself. I am not a theologian or a Scripture scholar and…Continue Reading

Latino GOP Leader Says . . . Democratic Party’s Attacks On Morality Hurt Its Membership

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — It’s not enough for Republicans to say their party is the natural home for Latinos who just don’t know it yet, a Latino GOP activist told The Wanderer. They need to see why that moral-values message is true. At the same time, said Reymundo Torres, “There’s a great opportunity to bring over [Latino] Catholic Democratic officeholders who resent being told to toe the line against their faith and their culture” by party bosses of Barack Obama’s “Culture of Death.” Torres, a Catholic and president of the Arizona Latino Republican Association (ALRA), sat down for a Wanderer interview on October 10. He talked about prospects for adding both groups to active Republican participation. Although ALRA doesn’t…Continue Reading

In November Election . . . Why GOP Candidates May Not Get Resounding Wins

By DEXTER DUGGAN Actress Julia Roberts starred in the 1999 movie Runaway Bride, about a recurringly hesitant wife-to-be who keeps leaving her grooms cold at the altar. Was the movie just re-released? There’s Mr. Conservative Activist at the head of the church aisle for the 2014 election, waiting to tie the knot. He still believes in traditional rules and “social issues” like opposite-sex weddings. But coy Miss GOP has disappeared again, white lace flapping. Big, bad judges are inventing all kinds of weird rules these days, including creating homosexual “marriage” as a constitutional mandate. Tremulous Miss GOP doesn’t want to offend anyone, left, right, or in-between. But if she absolutely has to disappoint, she’d rather do it to the faithful…Continue Reading
