Eric Holder Is Wrong Because MLK Was Right

March 4, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on Eric Holder Is Wrong Because MLK Was Right

By TERENCE P. JEFFREY Attorney General Eric Holder is now arguing that state attorneys general who refuse to defend provisions in their state constitutions restricting marriage to the union of one man and one woman are following in the footsteps of the civil rights movement. “Mr. Holder has said he views today’s gay-rights campaigns as a continuation of the civil rights movement that won rights for black Americans in the 1950s and ’60s,” The New York Times reported February 25. Holder provided an example of what the Times was talking about when he spoke earlier in February at a dinner sponsored by the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s most prominent advocate of same-sex marriage. “Just as was true during the…Continue Reading

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — What happened when a southern California photographer refused the business of a man because she disagreed with his lifestyle? The rejected customer probably slammed a lawsuit onto her and denounced her bigotry at a packed media conference. By the next day, the photographer’s reputation was being flayed from coast to coast. Actually not. Because in this case the customer was a national conservative leader, Alan Sears, head of the Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Alliance Defending Freedom. Sears simply took his business elsewhere last year — he’d wanted to arrange a Christmas card photo with his family — and said he didn’t want to compromise the photographer’s conscience. The incident was recounted in a January 23 story in…Continue Reading

Conservative Conference . . . Asserts People’s Right To Call Government To Account

March 2, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on Conservative Conference . . . Asserts People’s Right To Call Government To Account

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — Citing key words from the Declaration of Independence, former conservative Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain reminded a conference here that when government becomes destructive of the people’s basic rights, they have the authority to alter or abolish it. Those words from one of the United States’ foundational documents could be considered very dangerous to a swollen, contemptuous political establishment that presumes to grind down the people with arrogant, elitist diktats assaulting their fundamental values. The Tea Party spontaneously arose across the United States in 2009 to oppose such tyranny. And there was Tea Party spirit here at the Western Conservative Conference, where Cain delivered the keynote address on February 22. Warning that “the American dream…Continue Reading

The Continuing Assault On Christianity

February 28, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on The Continuing Assault On Christianity

By LAWRENCE P. GRAYSON (Editor’s Note: This is the third in a series of four articles concerning America’s cultural and moral decline. Lawrence P. Grayson is a visiting scholar in The School of Philosophy, The Catholic University of America.) +    +    + Ever since the social forces unleashed in the 1960s overran the Christian mores of the country, America has continued to move toward becoming a more irreligious nation. In the last half century, there has been a progressive offensive against the public display and acknowledgment of religion, accompanied by lifestyle practices and social abuses which are antithetical to Christian beliefs. Marriage, the family, and even life itself have been degraded. Today, a great deal of social practice and political…Continue Reading

Why I Don’t Love The Beatles

February 27, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on Why I Don’t Love The Beatles

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK First of all, I am not talking about “not loving” the Beatles’ music as music. The music is irrelevant to the discussion that follows. I have found that the music isn’t what people refer to when they say they “love the Beatles.” I listened to the outpouring of emotion that greeted the 50th anniversary of the group’s appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show in mid-February and heard very little mention of melody, harmony, and chord changes. What all the aging Beatlemaniacs were talking about was something very different: the cultural impact of the Beatles on their generation. That is what I am not a fan of. I think it changed the baby boomers and country dramatically…Continue Reading

February 26, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on Raymond Cardinal Burke . . . The Pope’s Radical Call To The New Evangelization

(Editor’s Note: Raymond Cardinal Burke is the prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura. He also heads the Advisory Board of the Dignitatis Humanae Institute and previously served as the archbishop of St. Louis, Mo. This commentary first appeared in the February 21, 2014 edition of L’Osservatore Romano, and was provided by News.Va. All rights reserved.) +    +    + During a recent visit to the United States, I was repeatedly impressed by how deeply Pope Francis has penetrated the national conversation on a whole range of issues. His special gift of expressing direct care for each and all has resonated strongly with many in my homeland. At the same time, I noted a certain questioning about whether Pope…Continue Reading

Our “Evolving” Thought

February 25, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on Our “Evolving” Thought

By DEACON JAMES H. TONER (Editor’s Note: Deacon James H. Toner, whose most recent book is Worthy of the Promises, serves at Our Lady of Grace Church in Greensboro, N.C. Another version of this article appeared in his diocesan newspaper.) +    +    + “That a good many Christians today kneel before the world is a fact perfectly clear” — Jacques Maritain (1882-1973), The Peasant of the Garonne. +    +    + A number of prominent politicians have recently suggested that their thought has been “evolving” on various moral subjects. Inevitably some will ask why the Church’s doctrine (cf. Titus 2:1) isn’t, they think, similarly evolving. They tell us to prize novelty above everything else. The only thing we can be sure…Continue Reading

British Pro-Life Leader . . . Says World’s Bishops Must Deny Eucharist To Defiant

February 24, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on British Pro-Life Leader . . . Says World’s Bishops Must Deny Eucharist To Defiant

By DEXTER DUGGAN A veteran British pro-life leader, John Smeaton, received standing ovations at three recent major gatherings when he called attention to “the scandal of committed pro-abortion politicians receiving the Holy Eucharist,” he told The Wanderer. Accepting an award in early February at one of the gatherings, Smeaton called on Catholic bishops worldwide to insist that Catholic politicians publicly retract their pro-abortion positions before being allowed to receive the Eucharist. Smeaton told The Wanderer in a February 18 e-mail: “I have spoken about the scandal of committed pro-abortion politicians receiving the Holy Eucharist at three major gatherings over the past five months: in Ireland, at the Faith of our Fathers Conference in Kilkenny; at the International Theological Institute in…Continue Reading

By REY FLORES Dan Gonzalez is a man on a mission — a 25-year mission that has led him to create a terrific new software application, more commonly known as an “app.” The app that Gonzalez has created is the recently launched The Mass Explained app, which is taking evangelization and Catholic education into the 21st century. The Wanderer recently had the opportunity to interview Dan about his work. (Also, read our review of The Mass Explained app on p. 1 of this week’s issue.) Q. Why should people be excited about this new app? A. It’s a terrific new tool that can help Catholics of all ages grow even stronger in his or her faith. Its purpose is to…Continue Reading
