Q. There was a poem about the Blessed Mother that Archbishop Fulton Sheen used to recite. It began, “Lovely Lady, dressed in blue.” Can you find the words? — T.L.H., Massachusetts. A. Here are the words of the poem written by Mary Dixon Thayer: Lovely Lady Dressed In Blue Lovely Lady dressed in blue, Teach me how to pray! God was just your little boy, Tell me what to say! Did you lift Him up, sometimes, Gently on your knee? Did you sing to Him the way Mother does to me? Did you hold His hand at night? Did you ever try Telling stories of the world? O! And did He cry? Do you really think He cares If I…Continue Reading

The Wisdom Of God

February 2, 2017 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on The Wisdom Of God

By FR. ROBERT ALTIER Sixth Sunday In Ordinary Time (YR A) Readings: Sirach 15:15-20 1 Cor. 2:6-10 Matt. 5:17-37 In the second reading today, St. Paul says that he speaks a wisdom to the spiritually mature. This seems a bit striking since he has, on several occasions in the first chapters of his First Letter to the Corinthians, stated that when he came to them it was not in wisdom. He did not preach with wisdom and fancy words, but he preached only Jesus Christ crucified. So why does he suddenly reverse himself and say that he is speaking with wisdom? In this letter, St. Paul makes a distinction between the wisdom of the world and the wisdom of God.…Continue Reading

John Paul II At World Youth Day In Denver… “The Outcome Of The Battle For Life Is Already Decided”

February 1, 2017 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on John Paul II At World Youth Day In Denver… “The Outcome Of The Battle For Life Is Already Decided”

(Editor’s Note: Pope John Paul II gave the following homily at the Mass at Cherry Creek State Park, Denver, for World Youth Day VIII, on Sunday, August 15, 1993, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. John Paul II’s Denver WYD homily is especially timely now, with the 44th annual commemorations of Roe v. Wade underway and pro-life elected officials taking office. A Leaven In The World . . . Faith Shone Amid Darkness Of D.C. Women’s “Death” March

By FR. KEVIN M. CUSICK As an oft-quoted Hebrew maxim says, “Save one life and save the world.” If the election of Donald Trump provides a safe space for pro-lifers and even one preborn life is saved as a result, then voting for him was worth it. Evidence is beginning to mount that many more than just one human being will be saved if Planned Parenthood is denied government funding. Already as of this writing, President Trump has reenacted the Mexico City policy which denies funding to abortion providers overseas. The Devil has been working overtime, however, in these first days of a new presidency as made evident by a march on Washington on the day after the inauguration that…Continue Reading

What Is Faith?… More Repellent Consequences Of Evolutionism

January 29, 2017 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on What Is Faith?… More Repellent Consequences Of Evolutionism

By RAYMOND DE SOUZA, KM Part 22 We tend to respect someone who may disagree with us on a scientific debate, as long as he is consistent with his arguments. As long as he accepts the natural, logical consequences of his beliefs, he deserves respect. But when someone disagrees with us but is not consistent, and contradicts himself, we naturally tend to have less respect for him in a debate, if any at all. Take, for instance, the man who sincerely believes in evolution, that is, humans descend from different couples of inferior species, baboons, chimpanzees, or gorillas, whichever they prefer to descend from. This is not reasonable. First of all, it lacks solid scientific evidence; secondly, it reduces mankind…Continue Reading

Names For The Eucharist

January 28, 2017 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Names For The Eucharist

By DON FIER The Holy Eucharist, as we saw last week, completes Christian initiation. “Those who have been raised to the dignity of the royal priesthood by Baptism and configured more deeply to Christ by Confirmation,” states the Catechism of the Catholic of the Catholic Church (CCC), “participate with the whole community in the Lord’s own sacrifice by means of the Eucharist” (n. 1322). It is the “Sacrament of sacraments” toward which all the others are ordered. Fr. John A. Hardon, SJ, summarizes why the Holy Eucharist is so augustly referred to as the “source and summit” of ecclesial life: “Where the other sacraments give the grace they signify, the Eucharist contains the Church’s spiritual treasury, who is Christ Himself.…Continue Reading

Q. In a recent column, you referenced a report from the Lepanto Institute that Catholic Relief Services was involved in the distribution of condoms and sterilization kits in the Congo. But in our diocesan newspaper Today’s Catholic, there is an interview with Carolyn Woo, CEO of CRS, who said that the accusation is false. She said that the Madagascar bishops refuted the report and publicly supported CRS in 2013. The article containing the interview only mentioned storing and distributing condoms and nothing about sterilization kits or abortifacients. I should point out that 2013 was the only year mentioned and Project AXxes was not mentioned. The obvious question is where is the truth? — L.S., Indiana. A. In our previous column,…Continue Reading

Let Your Light Shine Before Others

January 26, 2017 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Let Your Light Shine Before Others

By FR. ROBERT ALTIER Fifth Sunday In Ordinary Time (YR A) Readings: Isaiah 58:7-10 1 Cor. 2:1-5 Matt. 5:13-16 In the Gospel reading today our Lord tells us that we are the light of the world. This is a great privilege, but it comes with an equally great responsibility. We are to give light to everyone around us, not by our scintillating speech or profound wisdom, but by living a life of charity. Our Lord said it most simply: “Your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Heavenly Father.” How many of us give such witness to our Lord by the way we live that people are glorifying God on our account?…Continue Reading

The Maltese Falcons

By FR. BRIAN HARRISON, OS (Editor’s Note: Fr. Harrison is a theologian and a priest of the Society of the Oblates of Wisdom. This commentary first appeared in OnePeterFive.com. All rights reserved.) + + + New York Times columnist Ross Douthat recently published a widely circulated commentary on the recent fallout from Amoris Laetitia entitled, “The End of Catholic Marriage.” In it, he argued persuasively that if Pope Francis’ apostolic exhortation on marital love comes to be generally interpreted and applied as liberally as it has been in the Diocese of San Diego, Calif., it will in effect mean the death of this sacrament as the Gospel of Christ and the Catholic Church have always presented it: a sacred covenant…Continue Reading

A Leaven In The World… Inauguration: Averting Great National Evil

January 23, 2017 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on A Leaven In The World… Inauguration: Averting Great National Evil

By FR. KEVIN M CUSICK “I desire therefore, first of all, that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all men: For kings, and for all that are in high station: that we may lead a quiet and a peaceable life in all piety and chastity. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who will have all men to be saved, and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Tim. 2:1-4). Politics is most definitely the art of avoiding the greater of two evils. And 2017 was the year America averted unprecedented opportunity for evil to run rampant in our land. Mr. Trump has said things that offend others and still…Continue Reading
