What Is Faith?… The Powers Of The Devil

December 4, 2016 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on What Is Faith?… The Powers Of The Devil

By RAYMOND DE SOUZA, KM What are the powers of the Devil? What can that creep do to us? Because of the general ignorance of Church teaching on the Devil that is commonplace in our days, people tend to fall into two opposite extremes: either to belittle or deny the Devil’s action or to be overanxious about it, fearing him more than he deserves. In either way they fall into the Devil’s traps. The Devil and his minions were blasted by the anger of God and flung down from Heaven into Hell, good and proper, but they did not lose their natural faculties. Such powers they received at their creation and they place them vastly above us in knowledge and…Continue Reading

Gifts Of The Holy Spirit — Counsel

December 3, 2016 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Gifts Of The Holy Spirit — Counsel

By DON FIER “No one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is from God, that we might understand the gifts bestowed on us by God” (1 Cor. 2:11-12). These words of St. Paul to the Corinthians give us a glimpse of the wonders that can be ours through actuation of the infused gift of understanding, the second of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, the gift we considered last week. So deep and sublime are the sacred mysteries of our faith that no created being, no matter how intellectually gifted, can even begin to scratch their surface without supernatural assistance. While…Continue Reading

Editor’s Note: Fr. George Rutler is on the money again in his post-election bulletin column at St. Michael’s Church in New York City: “Considering how many crucial matters were at stake during the recent election, including the right to life and religious freedom, and the preponderant bias in the media and opinion polls, it did not seem melodramatic to hope for a prudential hand to guide things. There will be much thanksgiving on Thanksgiving Day…. “After the election, histrionics have abounded in academia. Our college campuses have been breeding grounds for self-absorption and corruption of the senses. Professors who had never attained moral maturity themselves reacted by providing ‘safe spaces’ for students traumatized by reality. In universities across the land,…Continue Reading

He Is God, Let Him In!

December 1, 2016 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on He Is God, Let Him In!

By FR. ROBERT ALTIER Third Sunday Of Advent (YR A) Readings: Isaiah 35:1-6a, 10 James 5:7-10 Matt. 11:2-11 In the Gospel reading today, Jesus asks the crowds who made the journey to hear St. John the Baptist what they went out into the desert to see. He gives them a few options: a reed swayed by the wind, someone dressed in fine clothing, a prophet. Our Lord answers each of these possibilities and then tells the crowds that John the Baptist was even more than a prophet. Today each of us has to be challenged similarly, but not with regard to John the Baptist. We have to ask the question about Jesus. Who do you believe Him to be? There…Continue Reading

The Feast Of Christ The King… Pope Francis Says The Heart Of Christ Is Always Open

November 30, 2016 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on The Feast Of Christ The King… Pope Francis Says The Heart Of Christ Is Always Open

(Editor’s Note: Below is the text of the homily Pope Francis delivered November 20 for the closure of the Jubilee Year of Mercy and the Feast of Christ the King. (The Holy Father said that “even if the Holy Door closes, the true door of mercy which is the heart of Christ always remains open wide for us.” (The Holy Year took place from December 8, 2015 to November 20, 2016. (The Vatican provided this translation of Pope Francis’ homily and ZENIT News Agency carried it on its website. The original text was in Italian.) + + + The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, is the crown of the liturgical year and this Holy Year…Continue Reading

A Leaven In The World… God’s Rule Exorcises Evil

November 28, 2016 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on A Leaven In The World… God’s Rule Exorcises Evil

By FR. KEVIN M. CUSICK Evil spirits usually make loud screeching and howling sounds as they depart from the exorcised body, politic or otherwise. They make it is painful as possible for anyone who refuses to cooperate with their malign agenda. To say it plainly, our nation has not only flirted with evil but for many years has advocated and legislated evil. The resulting counterattacks come in the theater when the pro-life vice president-elect decides to take in a play with his family, in the media with the peddling of lies, and on streets with the Soros-funded operative protesters. The point of laws is that none of us likes to be told what to do. Despite the efforts of the…Continue Reading

What Is Faith?… Good And Bad Angels

November 27, 2016 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on What Is Faith?… Good And Bad Angels

By RAYMOND DE SOUZA, KM Although there are millions and millions of good angels, we know only three of them by name, Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael: Michael (Hebrew for “Who is like God?” — Daniel 10:13; 12:1; Jude 9; Rev. 12:7), Gabriel (“Strength of God” — Daniel 8:16; 9:21; Luke 1:19, 26), and Raphael (“Healing of God” — Tobias 5:4; 12:15). Their feast day is September 29. Please note that only these three are publicly venerated by name. The Church does not permit the public use of any other angels’ names from apocryphal works or private revelations, such as “Uriel” and others. The neo-pagan New Age movement has adopted apocryphal angels, and Catholics are encouraged to avoid such. The…Continue Reading

Gifts Of The Holy Spirit — Understanding

November 26, 2016 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Gifts Of The Holy Spirit — Understanding

By DON FIER Wisdom, the first and loftiest of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, is “a spiritual gift which enables one to know the purpose and plan of God” (Catechism of the Catholic Church [CCC], Glossary). Under the direct influence of an interior movement of the Holy Spirit, one is able to “judge rightly concerning God and divine things through their ultimate and highest causes” (Fr. Jordan Aumann, OP, Spiritual Theology [SpT], pp. 270-271). Far surpassing human wisdom, which is the fruit of study and experience, it is precisely this gift that Solomon requested of our Lord as he ascended to the throne of his father David (see 1 Kings 3:9): the ability to see and judge all…Continue Reading

Q. I have often heard about the Third Secret of Fatima, including the attempt on Pope John Paul’s life and an apostasy from the faith. I have never seen the actual text of Sr. Lucia’s written document on this. Could you please print the text of her statement? — R.M., via e-mail. A. During her apparition to the three children at Fatima on July 13, 1917, the Blessed Mother revealed three secrets, two of them spoken by her and the third a series of images seen by the children. The first part of the secret was a vision of Hell, “where the souls of poor sinners go,” said our Lady. “To save them, God wishes to establish in the world…Continue Reading

Glorify God With One Voice

November 24, 2016 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Glorify God With One Voice

By FR. ROBERT ALTIER Second Sunday Of Advent (YR A) Readings: Isaiah 11:1-10 Romans 15:4-9 Matt. 3:1-12 In the readings today we are presented with Messianic prophecy. In the first reading Isaiah speaks about the shoot that will sprout from the stump of Jesse, how He will judge the people, and the radical changes that will take place on the Earth when the people of the world embrace the truth. In the Gospel, St. John the Baptist speaks about the coming of the Kingdom of God and the need for repentance on the part of the people in preparation for that Kingdom. He tells the Pharisees that they have to perform works that will demonstrate their repentance. In the second…Continue Reading
