Catholic Heroes . . . St. Elizabeth Of Hungary

November 22, 2016 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Catholic Heroes . . . St. Elizabeth Of Hungary

By CAROLE BRESLIN One of the difficulties of writing about the saints is sifting through various sources, some of which — partly because the era in which they were written — seem to have been embellished quite a bit. At the same time, there are certainly many saints whose lives are surrounded by the most extraordinary events from the time of their birth until even the present time. St. Elizabeth of Hungary’s birth was announced in faraway Thuringia the very moment it happened. Thuringia, located about 200 miles southwest of what is now Berlin, was ruled by Landgrave (German nobleman) Hermann. His minnesinger (poet/musician), Klingsohr, announced in the summer of 1207 that a girl of uncommon holiness was born to…Continue Reading

A Leaven In The World… Parable For Church In Historic Election

November 21, 2016 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on A Leaven In The World… Parable For Church In Historic Election

By FR. KEVIN M. CUSICK We stand athwart a new cultural landscape formed atop the shift of cultural tectonic plates which was the Trump election upset. A businessman political outsider with no military or previous elected experience will now be calling the shots in D.C. Many who were last are first and many who have been first will be last. Did this historic seismic shift in the U.S. landscape result from years of a very successful effort to disenfranchise white voters by an overcompensating promotion of minorities of every kind — even those “minorities” who have been artificially surgically altered? Time will tell, but the evidence is abundantly available for all to see. When millions of schoolchildren, who are tranquilly…Continue Reading

What Is Faith?… The Angels

November 20, 2016 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on What Is Faith?… The Angels

By RAYMOND DE SOUZA Part 12 “Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here; ever this day, be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen!” Everyone who had a minimal Catholic education knows this prayer and should say it every day, as a remembrance of the guardian angels’ presence in our lives and to ask their guidance and protection. But over and above this beautiful invocation, the angels constitute a world of their own, which unfortunately is by and large unknown to most Catholics these days of widespread ignorance of Catholicism. In this column of The Wanderer, we will investigate the angelic dimension of reality, in order to enrich our…Continue Reading

Gifts Of The Holy Spirit — Wisdom

November 19, 2016 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Gifts Of The Holy Spirit — Wisdom

By DON FIER The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, as we saw last week, are abiding supernatural habits or qualities which are first imparted to the soul as an effect of the Sacrament of Baptism and then fortified or strengthened by Confirmation. “They are supernatural impulses,” says Fr. John A. Hardon, SJ, “by which the Holy Spirit urges us to the practice of the Christian virtues. They correspond to the instincts of our human nature” (The Faith, p. 164). Moreover, both the infused supernatural virtues (theological and moral) and the gifts of the Holy Spirit reside in the human faculties, and both have the supernatural perfection of man and heavenly beatitude as their final cause. Their mode of operation…Continue Reading

Q. I attend a Sunday Tridentine Mass. Is it permissible to omit the epistle and the Gospel during this Mass and proceed to the homily? I have been to this Mass a number of times, but had not seen this practice before. — M.S., via e-mail. A. And we hope you never see it again. No, it is not permissible to omit the epistle and Gospel from the Mass, anymore than a priest can omit the offertory and consecration. The next time you see this priest, ask him by what authority he omitted these essential readings from Holy Scripture. Q. Is it or isn’t it a serious sin for Catholics to vote for candidates who support abortion and selling body…Continue Reading

The Armor Of Light

November 17, 2016 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on The Armor Of Light

By FR. ROBERT ALTIER First Sunday Of Advent (YR A) Readings: Isaiah 2:1-5 Romans 13:11-14 Matt. 24:37-44 In the second reading today St. Paul tells the Romans that it is time for them to wake from their sleep. He tells them that the night is advanced and that the day is at hand. For this reason they are to put aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. By this he means that they are to put aside the immorality and live in a good and holy manner. As we begin this new Church year, we are called to this same kind of conversion. Not only has the world gone far away from the Lord, but…Continue Reading

Catholic Leaders Offer Their Hopes For The Trump Presidency

(Editor’s Note: Below is a selection of statements on the presidential election from various Catholic shepherds, both bishops and priests. First is a November 9 statement, “Coming Together as Faithful Citizens for the Common Good,” from Archbishop Joseph Kurtz of Louisville, Ky., president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.) + + + Archbishop Joseph Kurtz President, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops “The American people have made their decision on the next President of the United States, members of Congress as well as state and local officials. I congratulate Mr. Trump and everyone elected yesterday. Now is the moment to move toward the responsibility of governing for the common good of all citizens. A Leaven In The World… In Parishes, Size Isn’t Everything

November 14, 2016 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on A Leaven In The World… In Parishes, Size Isn’t Everything

By FR. KEVIN M. CUSICK The pastor of a parish that is somewhat more diminutive in size was visiting a family one evening for dinner. The host family usually attends a parish a few hundred families larger in size. The father of the family turned to the priest at one point during the evening and asked, “Do you even have any teenagers in your parish?” or words to that effect. Although the priest did not respond this way, the best rejoinder probably would have been to pose another question, “What’s your point?” He instead pointed to a strong young adult presence as an indicator of strong parish dynamics of a different sort. Chauvinism is unfortunately just as much a temptation…Continue Reading

What Is Faith?… The Most Holy Trinity

November 13, 2016 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on What Is Faith?… The Most Holy Trinity

By RAYMOND DE SOUZA, KM Part 11 Have you ever asked yourselves why the mystery of the Trinity was not clearly defined in the Old Testament, but was only revealed in the New? We find hints of it in the Book of Genesis, for instance, when God said, “Let us create man in our image and likeness” (Gen. 1:26) — our image, our in the plural. But the reason it was not clearly revealed, according to some sound theologians, is because of the Hebrews’ tendency to give into polytheism, to imitate the pagan races around them. The Mystery of the Trinity is a chief article of the Christian faith, and is also an incentive to piety. Jesus spoke plainly about…Continue Reading
