A Leaven In The World . . . “We Have No King But Caesar”

October 31, 2016 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on A Leaven In The World . . . “We Have No King But Caesar”

By FR. KEVIN M. CUSICK “I am the Lord thy God, thou shalt not have other gods besides me.” The current political battles swirl around the skirmishes leading up to the decision-point when Catholics are forced to make a decision for president on November 8. Voting is already taking place in many areas. Obeying the Commandments and exercising good citizenship as Christians seems to pose a more and more difficult balancing act. How do we advance the social kingship of Christ by choosing among what seems a very paltry and degrading selection of candidates? Are we swirling around the drain as a nation? Has our experiment in ordered liberty reached a point of exhaustion? News via WikiLeaks that Democratic operatives…Continue Reading

What Is Faith?… God’s Foreknowledge And Our Freedom

October 30, 2016 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on What Is Faith?… God’s Foreknowledge And Our Freedom

By RAYMOND DE SOUZA, KM Part 9 Who hasn’t heard — or uttered — this common fatalistic objection: “Since God can see the future, He knows whether or not I will be saved. If I will be saved, no matter what I do, I will be fine in the end. If I will not be saved, what is the point of obeying God’s law?” This is a fatalist objection, as it implies that God’s foreknowledge of my future conditions my choices. But it does not. Knowledge of the future is not control of the future. Knowledge is knowledge, purely and simply. Simply because God knows my future choices it does not mean that He is causing them. My choices are…Continue Reading

The Matter, Form, And Rite Of Confirmation

October 29, 2016 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on The Matter, Form, And Rite Of Confirmation

By DON FIER Confirmation, divinely instituted by Christ Himself, is the sacrament which effects in the Christian exactly what its name implies: It makes firm or strengthens the gifts of grace that were first received in Baptism. As suggested by Fr. Paul Haffner in The Sacramental Mystery (TSM), one might say that Confirmation completes Baptism as the mystery of Pentecost completes or “puts a seal on the Paschal Mystery” (p. 71). In his 1947 encyclical “On the Mystical Body of Christ,” Pope Pius XII emphasized the purpose and importance of Confirmation by stating: “By the chrism of Confirmation, the faithful are given added strength to protect and defend the Church, their Mother, and the faith she has given them” (Mystici…Continue Reading

Q. I personally don’t believe too many women’s lives are endangered when choosing an abortion. It also seems to me that our Church says if such a circumstance happens during an abortion or a regular delivery, doesn’t the Church rule the baby should be saved first? That seems to conflict with what Mrs. Clinton believes. — D.L.H., Iowa. A. No, the Church does not teach that the baby should be saved first if there is a danger to the life or health of the mother. The Church teaches that every medical effort should be made to save both of them. “Medical science has made truly amazing advances over the last thirty years,” said Dr. Fred E. Mecklenburg in an essay in…Continue Reading

Let Your Hearts Be Strengthened

October 27, 2016 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Let Your Hearts Be Strengthened

By FR. ROBERT ALTIER Thirty-Second Sunday In Ordinary Time (YR C) Readings: 2 Macc. 7:1-2, 9-14 2 Thess. 2:16-3:5 Luke 20:27-38 In the first reading today we hear about the heroic family who all suffered death at the hands of a tyrant who was trying to force the Jewish people to give up their faith because it made them different from everyone else in the kingdom. While we hear about four of the brothers, there were actually seven brothers and their extraordinary mother who all died that day. We might breathe a sigh of relief knowing that such things occurred “back then,” but they are not occurring anymore. After all, we live in an enlightened age; such a thing would…Continue Reading

Cardinal Ratzinger’s 2004 Letter… Forbids Catholics To Vote For Hillary Clinton Under Pain Of Mortal Sin

October 26, 2016 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Cardinal Ratzinger’s 2004 Letter… Forbids Catholics To Vote For Hillary Clinton Under Pain Of Mortal Sin

(Editor’s Note: Below is a commentary The Wanderer is reprinting with permission from Catholics 4 Trump [catholics4trump], originally posted on October 11. All rights reserved. Catholics 4 Trump makes the case that a vote for the pro-abortion Hillary Clinton is objectively grave matter. Note the contrast between Trump’s and Clinton’s abortion stands in the third and final presidential debate on October 19.) + + + There are currently dishonest self-professed Catholics who are shamelessly distorting an out of context footnote from a letter by Cardinal Ratzinger in 2004 to promote voting for pro-abortion Hillary Clinton in this year’s presidential election. The letter clearly states the following Catholic moral teaching, which all Catholics who continually vote Democrat (pro-abortion) ignore at their own…Continue Reading

A Leaven In The World… Pray Always And Never Grow Weary

October 24, 2016 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on A Leaven In The World… Pray Always And Never Grow Weary

By FR. KEVIN M. CUSICK A moment of dawning experience when I was young gave birth to a nearly perfect prayer. This farewell to innocence of which I speak was a blessing. In the light of it I came to know the presence of God through His goodness which is the heart of prayer in the life of faith. I remember the experience vividly. I was lying awake one night in bed during that period which, no matter how brief, usually seems lengthy while waiting for the mind to slow, allowing sleep to come. My mother, father, and siblings were all asleep around me in the quiet house. I began to think of each and all of them with an…Continue Reading

What Is Faith?… Other Attributes Of God

October 23, 2016 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on What Is Faith?… Other Attributes Of God

By RAYMOND DE SOUZA Part 8 “I love thee, Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold” (Psalm 18:1-2). The enthusiasm with which the psalmist praises God our Lord comes from his knowledge of God’s perfection and attributes. He knew whom he loved. As we are called to love God in the same way, let us learn a little more about those attributes. We will take a brief look at His power, holiness, majesty, wisdom, goodness, justice, righteousness, Providence, kindness, bounty, truth, fidelity, and mercy. That should do for one single lesson! First of all,…Continue Reading

Confirmation In The Economy Of Salvation

October 22, 2016 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Confirmation In The Economy Of Salvation

By DON FIER Part 2 In the introductory paragraph of its section on the Sacrament of Confirmation, the Roman Catechism [RC], promulgated in 1566 by Pope St. Pius V soon after the Council of Trent, are the following words: “If there was ever a time when the Sacrament of Confirmation needed to be explained carefully, that time is now. All too many members of the Church neglect it altogether; and those who have received it or who plan to receive it, see it as something minor in their lives. There is need, then, for instruction on the nature, power, and dignity of this sacrament. Far from being neglected or received in a mere perfunctory way, Confirmation must be restored to…Continue Reading

Editor’s Note: J.H.T. of North Carolina, a deacon who has been a witness to the “liturgical wars” of the past half-century, has recommended an “extraordinary book” — Peter Kwasniewski’s Resurgent in the Midst of Crisis: Sacred Liturgy, the Traditional Latin Mass, and Renewal in the Church — that he says should be read by all Catholics, clergy and lay, who want to save and restore the liturgy, whether it’s in the Ordinary Form or the Extraordinary Form. The thesis of the book, he said, can be captured in this sentence from page 31: “We must stop compromising when it comes to the worship of Almighty God; we must carefully avoid, or banish from our churches, all mediocrity, banality, worldliness and…Continue Reading
