Praise God For What He Has Done For Us

By FR. ROBERT ALTIER Fifth Sunday In Ordinary Time (YR C) Readings: Isaiah 6:1-2a, 3-8 1 Cor. 15:1-11a Luke 5:1-11 In the Gospel reading today we hear about our Lord getting into a boat belonging to Peter. At that point our Lord was beginning to gain some notoriety, as evidenced by the number of people who gathered to hear Him and the need for Him to get into a boat and push out, away from the shore. Imagine for a moment what the average human person would do after the fact, especially when it becomes clear to everyone who this Person was who was in your boat. I suspect that most people would be sure to tell everyone about the…Continue Reading

Respect All Human Beings Without Exception

By RAYMOND CARDINAL BURKE (Editor’s Note: The Wanderer went to press this week on January 21, one day before the January 22 anniversary of Roe v. Wade. To commemorate that tragic date and in keeping with our recent three-part interview with Cardinal Burke, we reprint here his July 4, 2013 speech at the Second Annual International Conference on Human Dignity at the Dignitatis Humanae Institute in Vatican City. (His Eminence in this 2013 speech decries the relentless push in the United States for unlimited abortion, and scores the Gay Marriage Act which had just been approved in the United Kingdom. Only two years later, the U.S. Supreme Court would rule that same-sex marriage is a fundamental right. (Cardinal Burke saluted…Continue Reading

A Leaven In The World… Ecumania: “Solemn Nonsense”?

January 25, 2016 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on A Leaven In The World… Ecumania: “Solemn Nonsense”?

By FR. KEVIN M. CUSICK Is celebrating Lutheranism “solemn nonsense”? If celebrating anything good or true in Martin Luther’s Protestant rebellion is the same as affirming truths that always existed within the Catholic faith, then perhaps it is. The Catholic Church has always claimed the charism, or Magisterium, of teaching authority in matters of faith and morals, that is, of what is necessary for salvation. If we are celebrating something in the beliefs of separated brethren that is not necessary for salvation, then we are responsible for scandal. So, the question remains: Why cause confusion by celebrating truths shared with Protestants if they could remain in the truth and become Catholic? Sounds like “solemn nonsense” that the Pope would do…Continue Reading

An Apologetics Course . . . Evangelization Is The Lord’s Command

January 24, 2016 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on An Apologetics Course . . . Evangelization Is The Lord’s Command

By RAYMOND DE SOUZA, KM Part 38 We continue on this challenging topic of salvation outside of the Church of God. The official Catholic teaching remains: “Extra Ecclesiam, nulla salus” — “outside of the Church, there is no salvation.” And yet people who are faithful to divine grace (which God gives to all) and to the natural law (which is written in men’s hearts) can be saved. “If this is so, that is, that non-Catholics and even non-Christians can be saved, why bother to seek converts at home and send missionaries abroad?” The answer is simple: Because Jesus Christ, who is God Incarnate, commanded us to do it. And we reply, “Thy will be done,” and carry out with the…Continue Reading

The Resurrection Of The Body

January 23, 2016 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on The Resurrection Of The Body

By DON FIER Part 2 Vitally important to our Catholic faith is the glorious proclamation that Christians throughout the world resoundingly sing out during the liturgical season of Easter which we have just entered: “Christ is risen, Alleluia! Indeed, He is risen, Alleluia, Alleluia!” Each Sunday when we say in the Nicene Creed: “I look forward to the resurrection of the dead,” we are professing our belief that just as Christ is truly risen from the dead and lives forever, so too will our mortal bodies be raised from the tomb and be reunited with our souls for eternity (cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church [CCC], n. 989). We are affirming that “the risen Christ himself is the principle and…Continue Reading

Q. We have a transsexual extraordinary minister of Holy Communion who serves at our children’s Mass. This person came into the Church through RCIA. I wrote to the bishop, but he told me to find another parish if I find this too difficult to watch. I need documentation to show that this is incorrect. Can you help? — K.M., California. A. We can try, but the promoters of the LGBT movement have so influenced the culture that many people are blind to the truth. First of all, the Church has made clear that persons serving in liturgical ministries, including lay people given the privilege of distributing Holy Communion, must meet certain high standards. Here is a summary of those standards…Continue Reading

Jesus Is The Word Of God

January 21, 2016 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Jesus Is The Word Of God

By FR. ROBERT ALTIER Fourth Sunday In Ordinary Time (YR C) Readings: Jer. 1:4-5, 17-19 1 Cor. 12:31-13:13 Luke 4:21-30 In the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah, there is a passage which the New American Bible translates: “more tortuous than all else is the human heart; beyond remedy, who can endure it?” This is the same Jeremiah whose call we hear today in the first reading. God makes clear to Jeremiah that he has to have courage and speak to the people whatever God wants to have spoken. While this specific call is particular to Jeremiah, each and every priest is entrusted with this same responsibility. Every deacon, priest, or bishop is supposed to speak the Word of God in…Continue Reading

Saudi Arabia And Iran Battle For Dominion Of Islamic World

January 20, 2016 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Saudi Arabia And Iran Battle For Dominion Of Islamic World

By FR. SAMIR KHALIL SAMIR, SJ (Editor’s Note: AsiaNews posted the following essay by Fr. Samir Khalil Samir, SJ, an Egyptian Jesuit and one of the best-known Catholic scholars on Islam. The article was posted on January 8. All rights reserved.) + + + The emerging clash between Saudi Arabia and Iran has certain political and economic motives: differing positions on the issues of Syria and Yemen; competition in oil production; the struggle for power on the Arabian Peninsula and the Gulf. But this confrontation also has religious roots and it is about whose form of Islam is destined to dominate. Islam has been going through a crisis for decades, its most profound in the last two centuries. This crisis…Continue Reading

A Leaven In The World . . . New Book On Mercy: A Fuller Portrait Of Francis

January 18, 2016 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on A Leaven In The World . . . New Book On Mercy: A Fuller Portrait Of Francis

By FR. KEVIN M. CUSICK My availability as a confessor prior to all weekend Masses at my parish and at additional times during the week has been a blessing for me as well as for all of those who have come with confidence, seeking the availability of God’s mercy. It doesn’t always translate into increased parish membership. But shouldn’t every parish be a place where people go expecting to find a priest waiting for them in the tribunal of God’s forgiveness if he is available outside of Mass, when most of the faithful find themselves at church for the Lord’s Day? I was glad to see that venerable journalist Andrea Tornielli is at the helm for Pope Francis’ new book-length…Continue Reading

An Apologetics Course . . . Why, Then, Should We Try To Convert People?

January 17, 2016 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on An Apologetics Course . . . Why, Then, Should We Try To Convert People?

By RAYMOND DE SOUZA Part 37 “Extra Ecclesiam nulla salus” — “outside of the Church there is no salvation” — is a formal Catholic teaching. There is only one Lord, one faith, and one Baptism (Eph. 4:5) and One Church of God, the Pillar and Mainstay of the Truth (1 Tim. 3:15). And yet people who are faithful to divine grace (which God gives to all) and to the natural law (which is written in men’s hearts) can be saved. Naturally, an objection emerges in full force: If people can be saved like this, why should we try to convert them, anyway? Just let them be and God will take care of them. . . . A couple of principles…Continue Reading
