A Leaven In The World… Two Academics Enter the Lists Against The Filial Correction

October 16, 2017 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on A Leaven In The World… Two Academics Enter the Lists Against The Filial Correction

By FR. KEVIN M. CUSICK, M.A. The battle is joined and the duel of the academics over the fate of the Filial Correction is heating up. On one side of the ring we have Robert Fastiggi, Ph.D., and Dawn Eden Goldstein, STD. On the other side we have, as of this writing, 235 signatories of the Correction. Many of these are also members of the academic world, and, like Fastiggi and Goldstein, also have a Ph.D. or STD after their names. Some signers listed, although not currently breathing the rarefied air of academia, possess STLs and certainly academic degrees of some kind. A smaller number of the signatories are listed simply as pastors or religious. Fastiggi and Goldstein, in “Critics…Continue Reading

The Sacred Liturgy . . . The Liturgy Of The Church Militant

October 15, 2017 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on The Sacred Liturgy . . . The Liturgy Of The Church Militant

By RAYMOND DE SOUZA Part 3 Have you, Wanderer reader, even attended Mass in one of the Eastern Rites of the Church? If you haven’t, look online for a parish of the Byzantine Rite to see how beautiful the worship of God can be among our Eastern Rite brethren. Just make sure it is Catholic, and not Orthodox, because both of their liturgies seem very similar to people who are not aware of the differences. I for one used to frequent the Catholic Ukrainian Rite in Australia, for nearly nine years, and became involved in the sacredness of the Catholic East, which is virtually unknown to most Americans of the Latin Rite. In the United States, we are used to…Continue Reading

Scriptural Basis Of The Sacrament Of Holy Orders

October 14, 2017 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Scriptural Basis Of The Sacrament Of Holy Orders

By DON FIER Part 3 In our previous installment on the scriptural background for the Sacrament of Holy Orders, we examined the circumstances leading to a shift in the Old Testament from a priesthood entrusted to the heads of households and patriarchs to a ministerial priesthood divinely delegated to Aaron and his descendants within the tribe of Levi. Likewise, we saw that this new form of priesthood extended from the time of Moses and the exodus of the Chosen People from Egypt until the end of the Old Covenant and the beginning of Christianity. The Aaronic priesthood and the service of the Levites, teaches the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC), is seen by the Church as “a prefiguring of…Continue Reading

Editor’s Note: Writing in a recent parish bulletin about “the current mania for tearing down statues and stifling free speech by cultural ingénues ignorant of history and logic,” Fr. George Rutler of the Church of St. Michael in New York City pointed out that those concerned about some of our Founding Fathers owning slaves ought to be concerned about the role played by Islam in the slave trade. His are his words: “Islam, which means ‘submission,’ has never had abolitionists like the Christians Bartolome de las Casas and William Wilberforce. Muhammed was a slave trader, and the Koran devotes five times as much space to regulating labor slavery and sex slavery as it does to prayer. Nearly 200 million slaves,…Continue Reading

There Is Only One True God

October 12, 2017 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on There Is Only One True God

By FR. ROBERT ALTIER Twenty-Ninth Sunday In Ordinary Time (YR A) Readings: Isaiah 45:1, 4-6 1 Thess. 1:1-5b Matt. 22:15-21 In the Gospel reading today, the Pharisees and the Herodians, who would normally be bitter enemies, found a common enemy and teamed up to trap Him. Although they acknowledged that our Lord taught the way of God in accordance with the truth and was not concerned about anyone’s opinion, they wanted to discredit Him before the people. So, after their words of flattery, they asked Him if it was lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar, something to which the Jewish people would have been opposed. But our Lord surprised them! He called them hypocrites and asked to see…Continue Reading

Cardinal Mueller… In Recent Interview, Describes Toxic Atmosphere At The Vatican

October 11, 2017 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Cardinal Mueller… In Recent Interview, Describes Toxic Atmosphere At The Vatican

By CLAIRE CHRETIEN (Editor’s Note: LifeSiteNews published this article on September 29. All rights reserved.) + + + (LifeSiteNews) — The former head of the Vatican’s doctrine office is warning in a lengthy new interview that under Pope Francis fear now permeates the Church’s administrative body, the Roman Curia. “I heard it from some houses here, that people working in the Curia are living in great fear: If they say one small or harmless critical word, some spies will pass the comments directly to the Holy Father, and the falsely accused people don’t have any chance to defend themselves,” Gerhard Cardinal Mueller told the National Catholic Register’s Ed Pentin in a wide-ranging interview. The Pope removed Mueller, without explanation, when the…Continue Reading

A Leaven In The World… The Problem Of Evil And The Response Of Prayer

October 9, 2017 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on A Leaven In The World… The Problem Of Evil And The Response Of Prayer

By FR. KEVIN M. CUSICK “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Matt. 5:43-38). Our Lord’s teaching is…Continue Reading

The Sacred Liturgy . . . Lay Participation

October 8, 2017 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on The Sacred Liturgy . . . Lay Participation

By RAYMOND DE SOUZA, KM Part 2 In the previous article, I pointed out that the Sacred Liturgy of the Church of Jesus Christ, however impressive in its beauty and sacredness it may be, is not a theatrical spectacle attended by onlookers, but an act of divine worship by ministers and faithful alike. Our Holy Mother Church earnestly desires that all the faithful be led to that full, conscious, and actual participation in liturgical celebrations which is demanded by the very nature of the liturgy, and to which the Christian people, “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a redeemed people” (1 Peter 2:9), have a right and duty by virtue of their Baptism. Of course, we are…Continue Reading

Scriptural Basis Of The Sacrament Of Holy Orders

October 7, 2017 Our Catholic Faith Comments Off on Scriptural Basis Of The Sacrament Of Holy Orders

By DON FIER Part 2 As we began to explore the biblical roots of the priesthood in our last installment — and thus the Sacrament of Holy Orders — we saw that the priesthood and sacrifice are inseparably linked to one another. In fact, it might accurately be said that the basic definition of a priest is “one who offers sacrifice.” In his Modern Catholic Dictionary, Fr. John A. Hardon, SJ, defines the word priest as “an authorized mediator who offers a true sacrifice in acknowledgement of God’s supreme dominion over human beings and in expiation for their sins” (p. 438). We also observed that humanity was called to priestly worship from the beginning, the first recorded account being the…Continue Reading

Editor’s Note: Concluding our summary of the six appearances of our Lady of Fatima 100 years ago, here is an account of what happened on October 13, 1917, along with comments on lessons to be learned from Fatima. Despite torrential rains flooding Portugal, some 70,000 pilgrims slogged their way through the rain and the mud to stand in the Cova da Iria on October 13 and wait for the promised miracle of Fatima. Lucia’s mother, though a skeptic from the beginning, went with her daughter that day in case the apparition did not happen and the angry crowd turned on Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta. “If my child is going to die,” said Maria Rosa Santos, “I want to die with…Continue Reading
