Supreme Court Declines to Hear Catholic Schools’ Health-Law Challenge, For Now

April 1, 2014 World News Comments Off on Supreme Court Declines to Hear Catholic Schools’ Health-Law Challenge, For Now

By Mark Walsh on March 31, 2014 12:49 PM  The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear an early-stage appeal from a group of Roman Catholic schools on whether religiously affiliated non-profit organizations must comply with the so-called contraceptive-coverage mandate of the Affordable Care Act. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington and several specific Catholic schools in and around the nation’s capital have raised a religious objection to the health-care law’s requirement that health-insurance plans cover certain forms of contraception. While the Affordable Care Act exempts churches from the requirement, other religious organizations, including schools, colleges, and nursing homes, are not exempt. President Barack Obama’s administration has sought to accommodate religious organizations that object to the requirement by having…Continue Reading

March 30, 2014 World News Comments Off on Peru March For Life Draws Estimated 250,000

BY FABIOLA TORRES   Fri Mar 28, 2014 16:41 EST LIMA, Peru, March 28, 2014 (LifeSiteNews.com) – “We all have a child within us,” was the slogan for this year’s March for Life in Peru on March 22, which summoned 250,000 people in Lima alone, according to organizers. The turnout more than doubled that from last year and broke the record in Latin-American as the biggest pro-life demonstration ever. With thousands more participating in five cities, including 50,000 in Piura, Peruvians from all over the country got out to the streets to demonstrate their support for the pro-life cause. The mainstream media barely covered the event, however, and some outlets even stated that “hundreds” of people showed up, showing pictures of…Continue Reading

March 30, 2014 World News Comments Off on Scholar Recounts Black Catholics’ Rich History

By Kevin J. Jones    Baltimore, Md., Mar 29, 2014 / 06:03 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Black Catholics across the globe have dedicated their talents and their lives to their faith since earliest days of the Church, a Catholic author and scholar has said. “Black Catholicism is not something new. From the very first century, people of color have been involved in the universal Church,” Dr. Camille Brown, author of the 2008 book “African Saints, African Stories,” told CNA. “They have embraced the Universal Church with courage and with love of the Lord, just like everyone else.” Brown noted that this history dates back to events recorded in the Acts of the Apostles, where Philip the Apostle preached the gospel to…Continue Reading

Homosexuality, divorce and remarriage: Will a Catholic school in North Carolina set the tone for the Church?

March 29, 2014 World News Comments Off on Homosexuality, divorce and remarriage: Will a Catholic school in North Carolina set the tone for the Church?

By Dr. Jeff Mirus (bio – articles – send a comment) | March 28, 2014 3:47 PM A continuation of one of the most important Catholic stories of the past decade is unfolding at a Catholic high school in Charlotte, North Carolina. Parents and students at that school are divided in response to a presentation critical of homosexuality at a school assembly. The resolution of this division will send a signal which could substantially affect how local churches respond to similar cases in the immediate future. The issue has all the necessary elements of a blockbuster: The speaker was the well-known theologian Sr. Jane Dominic Laurel, a member of the Nashville Dominicans (Dominican Sisters of St. Cecelia), who are renowned…Continue Reading

The Pope And Obama: Seeds Of Good And Evil

March 29, 2014 World News Comments Off on The Pope And Obama: Seeds Of Good And Evil

by Judie BrownFri Mar 28, 2014 13:21 EST Jesus told us that, if we have faith the size of a mustard seed, we can move mountains. Yet the seeds most prevalent in society today are not those that bloom into something beautiful, but those that breed discontent, doubt, animosity, or even death. The seeds of life planted within a womb are repeatedly slaughtered. But our faith must remain. If we are to move mountains—soften the countless hardened hearts—we must rely on God. And we must pray. March 28, 2014 (ALL.org) – The deed is over and done. The Holy Father has met with the president of the United States, Barack Obama, and oh what an event it was. At least the media…Continue Reading

Cardinal Burke Stresses Catholic Media’s ‘Supreme Importance’

March 28, 2014 World News Comments Off on Cardinal Burke Stresses Catholic Media’s ‘Supreme Importance’

Rome, Italy, Mar 28, 2014 / 02:03 am (CNA).- Cardinal Raymond Burke has praised the work of Catholic media, noting its importance in forming a pro-life culture that respects religious freedom and the nature of marriage. “The culture of death advances, in large part, because of a lack of attention and information among the general public. What is more, the thoroughly galvanized anti-life and anti-family agenda of the pervasive secular mass media confuses and corrupts minds and hearts, and dulls consciences to the law written by God upon every human heart,” Cardinal Raymond Burke, prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, said March 24. Developing and supporting a “truly pro-life and pro-family media” is “of supreme importance” in an age characterized by…Continue Reading

Change In Annulment Process Could Lead To ‘Grave Damage’

March 27, 2014 World News Comments Off on Change In Annulment Process Could Lead To ‘Grave Damage’

By Adelaide Mena     Washington D.C., Mar 27, 2014 / 04:06 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Ecclesiastical tribunals are an essential part of the Church’s saving mission — thus changes to their procedures, including the annulment process, should be considered with great care, Cardinal Raymond Burke has said. Understanding the Church’s tribunal system, Cardinal Burke said March 20, “requires an understanding of the service of canon law in general to the saving mission of the Church, and its role in the Petrine ministry.” Cardinal Burke is prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, the Vatican’s highest tribunal court, which ensures the correct administration of justice in the Church, and was delivering a lecture at the Catholic University of America. Speaking to speculation…Continue Reading

March 26, 2014 – 4:53 AM By Terence P. Jeffrey Question: Does the Obama administration claim the right to force Americans to cooperate in killing their own grandchildren? Answer: Yes. On the face of it, this seems like an outrageous claim. But it is true. The outrage is what the government is demanding Americans do

Twenty-three years ago, Lincoln Catholic Diocese Bishop Glennon Flavin issued a letter to parishioners and physicians, decrying birth control as evil and immoral. Bishop Zubik: No Common Core In Catholic Schools Here

March 25, 2014 World News Comments Off on Bishop Zubik: No Common Core In Catholic Schools Here

Written by Peter Smith on Tuesday, 25 March 2014 6:00 am. Bishop David Zubik said that Common Core — the national educational standards that many public and Catholic schools have adopted — won’t be coming to Catholic schools in the Diocese of Pittsburgh.   In a March 18 letter, Bishop Zubik weighed in on a debate that has been roiling in educational circles recently.   Common Core was put together by representatives of various state, educational and other private organizations, trying to develop standard baselines for what students should be learning nationwide. In addition to critics who say it shoehorns a one-size-fits-all approach to public schools, some in Catholic circles have opposed using standards other than those that start with…Continue Reading
