Vatican City, 18 January 2014 (VIS) – The director of the Holy See Press Office, Fr. Federico Lombardi, S.J., confirmed that yesterday, Friday 17 January, the final meeting was held of of the International Investigative Commission on Medjugorje, instituted by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith under the presidency of Cardinal Camillo Ruini. The Commission has completed its work and, as anticipated, the results of the study will be submitted to the competent jurisdiction of the aforementioned Congregation.

Yesterday [Saturday, January 11, 2014], there was a public demonstration in the Piazza Santi Apostoli led by “Manif pour Tous—Italia”*, in defense of the natural family and against the approval of a law concerning homophobia, now in discussion in the Parliament.  The purpose of the demonstration (just like those in the past organized in the whole of Italy) is to safeguard freedom of thought and opinion (Article 21 in the Italian Constitution), and to safeguard the natural family, of which the Constitution speaks in Articles 29, 30 and 32, based on marriage between a man and a woman.

From 2010 to 2012, participants had prayed in front of Volunteer Women’s Medical Clinic. That clinic closed in 2012 after the state passed laws requiring that doctors at abortion clinics have hospital admission privileges.

U.S. District Judge Terence Kern on Tuesday struck down Oklahoma’s voter-approved ban, but headed off any rush to the altar by putting the effects of his ruling on hold while state and local officials complete an appeal. In the study, which was published online yesterday in the peer-reviewed open access journal PLOS Medicine, the researchers found that intimate partner violence (IPV) is associated with higher abortion rates and repeat abortions. The meta-analysis, which examined 74 studies of women around the world, found that between 2.5 and 30 percent of abused women have had an abortion within the last year.
