A Movie Review… “I Still Believe” Shows Enduring Faith

By REY FLORES

Filmmaking brothers Andrew and Jon Erwin have done it again with yet another touching movie about faith and music. If there are two things which I love in my life, those would be my Christian faith and playing and writing music.

Their new movie follows 2018’s terrific film about singer and songwriter Bart Millard of Christian rock band MercyMe and the powerful hit song I Can Only Imagine, inspiring the film by the same name.

It was the touching story about Millard’s upbringing in a broken home with an abusive father, and how he overcame these adversities to become an award-winning musician. Actors J. Michael Finley and Dennis Quaid delivered powerful performances on how a father and son reconciled, once the son learned his dad Arthur was terminally ill, thus inspiring the young musician to write this moving song.

I Still Believe chronicles the story of award-winning Christian singer Jeremy Camp and his first marriage to Melissa Lynn Henning-Camp who died in 2001, less than a year after they were wed, both at the tender age of 19.

The new film was produced under the Erwin brothers’ newly formed studio Kingdom, in association with Lionsgate, with a release date of March 13.

Up and coming actor K.J. Apa stars as singer/songwriter Jeremy Camp and the movie chronicles his life and his marriage to his first wife, Melissa. Melissa was diagnosed with ovarian cancer just before they were married, but they went ahead with their plans, although sadly she passed away the following year.

Actress Britt Robertson gives a strong tear-jerker performance in the role of Camp’s wife as she tries to make the best of whatever time she has left on Earth with her young husband. Make sure you bring a box of tissues for this one. I’m not big on romance movies, but this one is a must-see film.

Award-winning country singer Shania Twain and the always great Gary Sinise portray Camp’s parents in the film, offering convincing roles that only add to the story in a profound and poignant way.

The movie highlights Camp’s journey to finding love, fame, and his enduring faith in the midst of an unexpected tragedy.

Named after Camp’s popular song I Still Believe, the movie is an Erwin Brothers production, the same producers behind the blockbuster hit I Can Only Imagine. Jon Erwin, Andrew Erwin, and producing partner Kevin Downes are hoping to follow the commercial success of their first biopic, although they never initially intended to do another film about a musician.

Camp later moved on and married his wife Adrienne and the couple are raising three children. Camp credits Adrienne for helping him share his story about his first wife Melissa and how faith and his music helped carry them, and now his current marriage and family, through seemingly insurmountable challenges.

Interestingly enough, the secular Seventeen magazine for young women, which tends to cater to the Planned Parenthood-type agenda, listed this Christian film as its #1 ranked “7 Most Romantic Movies Premiering in 2020.”

As always, I encourage us all to support good wholesome films like this one on their opening weekend at the box office, as yet another message to Hollywood that we will no longer put up with all of the gratuitous sex and violence, as well as the other culture of death garbage they keep churning out.
